This is how I went from zero to $1,000,000.

One of the most powerful lessons that I've learned along my journey to becoming a millionaire is that it's not what you get, but who you become that matters most.

Inside this blog, I am going to share with you the steps that I took to make $1,000,000 when I started with zero dollars in the bank. As I walk you through these steps, I'm going to act as if I don't yet have the skills that I have spent years of my life cultivating.

From personal experience, I can confidently say that wealthy people think differently from everyone else. Researchers who studied hundreds of self-made millionaires for several years have found that many tend to practice different habits or display heightened traits that help them build wealth.

Thus, to make $1,000,000 you will have to do what others will not. The hardest part is going from zero to 6-figures. However, once you get to this point, you can scale your business, fast.

Keep in mind that I didn't make my first million through investing in stocks or cryptocurrencies. Rather, it was through building an online business. If you don't have a lot of money, an online business is a great place to start.

As you work through each of the 10 steps that I'm going to share with you, make sure that you also do the work to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset. A strategy will only take you so far. At the end of the day, you are responsible for taking action to create wealth. On that note, let's dive in!

Step #1 – Find a job that helps you cultivate a high-income skill

If you need to make more money, find a job that allows you to develop skills that will contribute to your entrepreneurial success. When I was 21 years old, I cultivated the skill of public speaking and coaching. I wanted to be in the business of helping others.

Soon thereafter, I started my first business, which was called Lifestyle Transformations. I facilitated free seminars every two weeks to promote my coaching services to people. The money that I made in my first online business didn't make me a millionaire.

However, the high-income skills that I developed in my role as a dating coach (sales, communication, marketing, coaching) have served me well in many other aspects of my online businesses today. In particular, in my role as a YouTuber.

Figure out which high-income skill you can master that will allow you to make good money on the side while you're building your online business.

For example, if you're a great writer, you could work as a freelance copywriter for entrepreneurs or companies. A role like this would allow you to master SEO and learn about the inner workings of an online business. This kind of knowledge is invaluable.

Step #2 – Choose a niche

A niche is a topic, category, or genre. You want to choose a niche that you have a passion for and that you believe in. Also, you want to choose a niche that has a high demand and potential for profitability. Study and follow successful entrepreneurs whom you want to model. Draw inspiration from their work.

Get to know the “ins” and “outs” of their business. What are they offering? How are they making money from this niche? Whichever niche that you choose, you want to go deep with it so that you can build a brand around it.

Step #3 – Build a brand

Simply put, a brand is a name that a mass number of people recognize and associate emotion with. Your brand is derived from who you are, who you want to be, and who people perceive you to be. More importantly, it is what differentiates you from the competition.

In the words of Jeff Bezos, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you're not in the room.” Your logo and your website are key components of your business that communicate what your brand is all about. They reflect your brand identity.

Step #4 – Create content

The best way to build your brand is through content creation. Content is king. It's everywhere. Content comes in many different forms – video, social media updates, blog posts, articles, podcasts, infographics, and eBooks.

There are a variety of different platforms that you can create content on, whether that's Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or any of the podcasting platforms.

I love being a content creator. It's what I spend the majority of my time doing in my business. Creating content is what has allowed me to attract hundreds of thousands of people to my YouTube channel and blog and build my brand to where it is today.

Content marketing is a great relationship-building tool. Identify what your customers' problems are and create content that helps them solve those problems. Doing so will help you build trust and create raving fans who end up buying from you again and again.

If you want to become a millionaire one day, you should publish content at least 3 times per week. Video content, is by far, one of my favorite ways to deliver content to my audience. If I were to start over, I would have focused 80% of my content creation efforts towards YouTube.

I suggest publishing videos on a variety of different topics related to your niche. Also, experiment with different types of video marketing, whether that's product reviews, vlogs, interviews, or Q&As.

See which videos get the most engagement and then create more content on those topics. Keep in mind that, for the first few months, you'll be creating content that nobody consumes. Push through and don't give up. Eventually, engagement will increase.

Step #5 – Do affiliate marketing

Once you start creating a lot of content and have a pretty solid following, start leveraging the power of affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is the process of earning commissions by promoting other peoples' products or services.

When choosing affiliate products, I suggest not promoting anything that you haven't used or benefitted from yourself. Only promote products that you feel will change people's lives.

I would encourage you to choose 1-3 products and act as if they are your own. Market and promote them as if they were under your brand. If you want to make $1,000,000, I would suggest promoting higher ticket affiliate products.

That being said, remember that affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick model of income. If you're willing to stick with the process, long-term, there is no limit to how much money you can make.

Step #6 – Sell on Amazon

So much money is being made on Amazon right now. It's too hard to pass up on this opportunity. By selling on Amazon's platform you get access to hundreds of millions of their customers (in the U.S. alone). Amazon is the largest eCommerce search engine. Thus, it's easier to rank products.

When it comes to selling on Amazon, you can either sell books or physical products. If you decide to self-publish, write books that are relevant to the content that you publish online. A book is easy to write if you're already in the habit of creating content.

Publishing books is a great way to generate leads and build your brand. In this video, I walk you through how you can create $10k/month in passive income with Amazon book publishing.

If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, I've got a course that I created called Mastering Book Publishing where I share my step-by-step system for publishing books on Amazon.

Publishing your book on Amazon is half of the battle. If you don't market your book effectively, nobody will ever find it!

This is why I also created a course called Mastering Book Marketing, which teaches you my best marketing strategies for getting more Amazon book sales. Book publishing is the most beginner-friendly way of making passive income online.

However, if you want to create financial freedom, I would sell physical products on Amazon related to your niche. An Amazon FBA business costs more money to build, but the potential to make larger sums of money is greater.

If you want to learn more about selling on Amazon FBA, check out my FREE 4-part video training series where I share my Amazon blueprint for success and how you can create your first $10k month selling online.

Step #7 – Create a funnel and an email list

A funnel is similar to a landing page. You want to give people something of high value so that you can collect their email addresses. By doing so, you build an email list.

When it comes to creating a funnel, I suggest using ClickFunnels. They have a lot of great tools that help you market and sell your products online.

An email list gives you the ability to connect with and build relationships with people. More importantly, it's a great place to promote your newest products or services so that you can scale your business. AWeber is a great software for building and growing your email list.

Step #8 – Create a 30-day email follow-up series

Once people opt-in to your email list, you want to write out an email follow-up series that can be created using AWeber. Within your email follow-up series, you want to make sure that you're always adding massive value to your subscribers.

These emails provide you with an opportunity to deepen the relationships that you have with them. Email sequences can move people through a journey of not having ever heard of your company to becoming a customer and (potentially) a raving fan.

A great way to increase email engagement is through storytelling. When it comes to your email writing, aim to tell a story in a way that allows your subscribers to connect with the message that you're trying to get across. Always strive to help people first. The money will follow.

Step #9 – Coach people

If people benefit from your content, there will be a percentage of them who will want to work with you more intimately. Coaching isn't passive because you're trading your time for money.

However, it allows you to build your coaching skills and carve out a name for yourself as an expert in your field. More importantly, it allows you to connect with some of your audience members on a deeper level.

Step 10 – Create an online course

At this stage of your entrepreneurial journey, you have enough data to know what people want from you. In an online course, you're breaking down what you would teach people in a series of 1:1 coaching sessions and providing them with a system for achieving a specific result.

An online course is a great way to scale your online business because it allows you to reach a lot of people.

If I started over again with my online courses I would probably have created something similar to what I've done with my Life Mastery Accelerator and Online Business Mastery Accelerator group coaching programs.

Conversely, I may have created a high-ticket course around a very specific topic that had a coaching element to it, and maybe some done-for-you services.

If I started tomorrow, these are the 10 steps I'd take to make $1,000,000.

Your life path may look very different from mine, which will mean that the steps you take will be different. That's totally OK. Know what your passions and strengths are and leverage them.

Entrepreneurship is a journey. The plan that you start with may not be the path that unfolds. Be flexible, stay open, and be willing to pivot if need be. It may take years to grow your wealth. It did for me! However, don't let that stop you.

Remember that it's who you become along your journey to success that matters most. Embrace the journey. Every step that you make is leading you to $1,000,000.

Success is simple. Don't make it more complex than it needs to be.

A lot of people fall victim to the complexity bias, which is a tendency to look at something that is easy to understand and view it as having many parts that are difficult to understand.

As you can imagine, this mindset can cause a lot of frustration and inaction.

Don't get me wrong, I am in no way saying that achieving success is easy. However, I believe that success becomes easy once you have mastered the mindset of success.

Are you ready to learn the 2 steps that you must repeat on a consistent basis if you want to become a millionaire?

Success isn't a result. Rather, it's a habit.

There is so much emphasis placed on achieving results, but there is a lack of interest in the process that is required to achieve success. The reality is that you cannot control results and outcomes, so there's no point obsessing over them. All that you have control over is the specific actions that you take every single day towards the achievement of your goals.

Focusing on the process of success is a habit in and of itself. Unfortunately, a lot of people get addicted to achieving. They forget that success isn't a sprint, but a marathon. When they don't get results fast enough, they give up. This dabbler mentality keeps them trapped in a state of inaction.

The master acknowledges that small, everyday decisions build upon one another and lead to big results. Don't get me wrong, one small decision isn't going to change your entire life. However, what about 10, 20, 50 or even 100 of them? Eventually, success starts flowing into your life in massive quantities because of the time and effort that you put into the achievement of your goals.

In his book, The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy argues that small changes, when done consistently, create enormous results. As he says, “It's not the big things that add up in the end; it's the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary.”

There are 2 steps that I have engaged in on a daily basis that has allowed me to achieve success at a relatively young age.

Step 1 – Commit To Learning

If you want to achieve success in life you must commit to learning. People who possess a growth mindset actively do the work to stretch themselves. They seek to grow and improve in every area of their lives. For instance, research shows that growth-minded individuals perceive task setbacks as a necessary part of the learning process and they “bounce back” by increasing their motivational effort.

Nobody has all of the answers. If they say they do, they're lying. Successful people don't assume that they know everything. Rather, they are passionately curious, always looking for new experiences that will allow them to learn and become more.

An inflated ego won't get you anywhere in life. In fact, it can become one of the biggest barriers to your personal growth. I believe that the three most dangerous words in the human vocabulary are, “I know that.” The moment that you speak these words, you shut your mind off from learning of any kind.

This is why I am always studying people who are more successful than me. By implementing their learning strategies and mastering their inner game, I fast track my success. Success always leaves clues. It's your job to look for them.

Step 2 – Take Massive Action

Taking action is the only way to achieve success in life. If you don't do something with the knowledge that you consume, you are only wasting time, energy, and money. I see a lot of people get too carried away with consuming knowledge, to the point that it becomes a deterrent to their success.

When you are engaged in a process of learning, it's easy to adopt the illusion that you are making progress. Yes, you will make shifts in your mindset, but you won't be growing in the way that you are supposed to grow. The only way that you make progress in life is by taking action.

If I spend one hour learning something, I spend two hours taking action. I learn and then I do. By engaging in this two-step process, I achieve results on a consistent basis. If you wait to take action you get yourself into trouble and risk falling into analysis paralysis.

Keep in mind that success is intentional. You can't just say that you want something. You've actually got to take action and do something. In the words of Carl Jung, “You are what you do, not what you say you'll do.” Making the decision to take action requires that you step outside of your comfort zone and are willing to fail. Trust me when I say that playing it safe doesn't help you win in the game of life.

This is where people's limiting beliefs, fears, and doubts come into play. Your mind is going to tell you all the reasons why you can't do something. Quiet this inner voice and act in spite of it.

Success is simple if you commit to learning and taking massive action.

This is how I have been able to become a millionaire, and there is no reason why you can't achieve the same success. You owe it to yourself to grow and develop into the person that you've always desired to be. Are you ready to implement these habits of success and take your life to the next level?

Discover How NOT To Make a Lot of Money

Dan Lok and I are back to talk about how to become a millionaire, which starts with deconstructing why people don't become wealthy.

In a world where there are so many opportunities to achieve financial independence, there is still a large percentage of people who never experience true wealth. A lot of people end up living from one paycheck to the other, despite being tired of the rat race.

There are a million reasons why people stay stuck in a financial rut, but oftentimes it's their relationship with money that keeps them struggling. Do you live a life lacking abundance?

Wealth is a mindset that must be cultivated. In the words of Robert Kiyosaki, “The single most powerful asset that we have is our mind. If trained well, it can create enormous wealth.”

Are you ready to learn the #1 skill that will give you the ultimate life of freedom and financial success? CLICK HERE to join Dan Lok and I on our webinar and receive a free copy of Dan's book, FU Money!

Financially wealthy people don’t create their wealth by accident, nor does it happen overnight. It requires risk, persistence, patience, sacrifice and a “do whatever it takes” work ethic. It's not for everyone. Neither Dan nor myself had wealth handed to us. We weren't born with a silver spoon in our mouths.

We always knew that we had to work hard and do whatever it took in order to build our businesses to where they are today. As a result, we value our success so much more.

This perspective on wealth allowed us to learn how to become a millionaire by 30.

In our interview together, Dan and I discuss 10 reasons why most don't become rich and how you can prevent against falling into this trap.

1. Poverty Mindset

Most people have a poverty mindset, not a prosperity mindset. This isn't a law of attraction, touchy-feely bullshit. A lot of people grow up in a home where their parents, friends, or relatives aren't wealthy. When you grow up in an environment like this, your perception of wealth becomes skewed.

When we are trying to create wealth and build a business, this is not a healthy mindset to adopt. It's like you're driving a car while pressing on the gas, but you have the emergency brake on.

The difference between a poverty versus a prosperity mindset is that one involves extracting while the other involves adding value. Money is a byproduct of value creation. If someone is making millions of dollars, that means that they are impacting millions of lives, in terms of scale.

When you have a job, you may be impacting your boss or manager, but that's about it. You aren't impacting a lot of people.

2. Lack of Commitment

Dan believes that wealth is all about committing to one idea over time. Most people are running a relay race, and when they get to 399 meters, they give up. How many times in your business did you feel like giving up, but you didn't? When it comes to achieving success, you can't have one foot in and one foot out. Commitment is about having both feet in.

How you do anything is how you do everything. When people say things like, “I'm interested” or “I'm considering” it drives us crazy. They are already planning in their head to quit. They know it's not going to work, which is why they end up failing. If you operate with this mindset in one area of your life, that's how you will operate in all other areas of your life.

The analogy Dan likes to use is the story about getting a black belt. Imagine you have two people. An ambitious, strong person wants to get a black belt. The sensei tells him that if he practices 2 times per week for 4 years, he will succeed. He responds with, “No way, I thought I would get a black belt in 4 months. I don't want to train for that long.” The sensei says, “Well, you won't get the black belt.”

Another guy who is shorter, skinnier and less flexible tells the sensei that he will do whatever it takes. The sensei tells him that he needs to come 5 times per week and train for 6 years.  This person says, “When can I start?”

3. Lack of Consistency

People always ask me what his #1 quality is and I always say that it's my consistency. That is what has contributed to my success in life. When Dan started his YouTube channel he only had a few hundred subscribers, but he was committed to growing it. It was a slow process, but he knew that he would eventually get there.

We both have had so many friends that are more gifted and talented than we are, but a lot of them have given up along the way. In our circle alone, Dan and I can probably count all of the people that have failed to achieve success. The people who are still around and that are doing well is few and far between. If success were easy, everybody would achieve it, but they don't.

4. Lack of Mentorship

The books that Dan has read and the seminars that he has attended have helped him. However, he is where he is today because of his two personal mentors. Think about martial arts in China. How did this skill get passed from one generation to the next? It didn't happen from a DVD or a YouTube video.

It took years of inner-circle, closed-door training. That is more of a Chinese way of thinking. However, in North America, we are taught to get things fast, take the shortcuts or swallow the magic pill. That's not how you get good at anything.

A lot of people try to reinvent the wheel and figure it out on their own but there are already people that have already solved the problems that they have. They've spent years creating the results you want. The fast-track for that is to go to those people and learn from them.

When it comes to finding a mentor, a lot of people approach it from the perspective of taking from someone.

You need to add value to the person that you want to learn from, without asking for anything in return. Someone who possesses a poverty mentality believes that because someone is successful, they are obligated to help them. That is a huge sense of entitlement.

Poor people sell time, whereas rich people buy time. If there's something that will save you time and that will shortcut your learning curve, take it. In the last two months, Dan has spent $250,000 on consultants and coaches because he knows that it will shave years off of his learning. He doesn't need to spend the money, but he does it because it matters to him.

When it comes to finding a mentor, if you can't even demonstrate that you want something bad enough, then nobody can help you. You have to help yourself.

5. Unrealistic Expectations

Nothing of value in life will ever come easy. Success doesn't happen overnight. It takes hard work, sacrifice, patience, and a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, many people fall into the trap of believing that this isn't the case. Don't buy into the scams. When you expect challenges and failures you will be better prepared to withstand the blows.

Let's say that you want to learn affiliate marketing and you join my course. Let's say that your expectation is that you are going to make $20,000/month in ten days. You are going to fail because you have the wrong expectation. When you fail, you end up thinking that the course doesn't work. Stefan sucks, affiliate marketing doesn't work, etc. You become a victim and blame others.

Same program, same mentor, but with a different expectation. You could want to join my course, knowing that you may not be the smartest. This is a new world for you. In the first six months, you know that you may not make any money, but you are committed to learning. You set the expectation that you will make $500-1$1000 per month by the end of the year.

When you adjust your expectation based on reality it changes the game. There are so many milestones that you can celebrate, which are still results. The process always leads to the money.

Don't be fooled by the get rich quick schemes.

The people that fall into this trap never become rich. If you are thinking about how to become a millionaire in 30 days, you are setting yourself up for failure. When it comes to achieving wealth, you need to adopt a long-term approach.

Think about how to become a millionaire in 5 years.

Building wealth is a process, not a one-time event. It takes time to create anything of value. That's a fact. If you want to learn 5 more reasons why people don't achieve financial success, check out the video on Dan Lok's YouTube channel! Everyone has the same opportunity to achieve wealth, but not everyone will take action and make it happen.

In the words of the motivational speaker, Talibah Aset – “You cannot build wealth and create the illusion of wealth at the same time. Get your priorities in order.” Which path do you want to take?
