Self discipline is the one character trait that all successful people share in common.

Being able to stay on track with your goals is essential to your long-term success in life. Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you didn't keep? A lot of people struggle with self discipline.

Changing old habits takes time, commitment and consistency. The good news is that self discipline is a learned behavior that can be developed.

Are you ready to learn how you can master this trait and start getting more done?

Watch the video below where I talk about the secret to lasting consistency:

Do you struggle with self discipline?

If so, you aren't alone. For a lot of people, self discipline can feel like a chore, something that they know they should do, but don't want to do. At the end of the day, it comes down to making a commitment to put off your immediate desires in favor of long-term rewards.

Why is self discipline so difficult to achieve? In his book, The Chimp Paradox: The Mind Management Program to Help You Achieve Success, Confidence, and Happiness, Dr. Steve Peters gives us an explanation. He explains that our emotional mind simply stops us from behaving in a way that will allow us to achieve our ideal state. Self discipline gives you the ability to overcome your emotional mind by moving forward with action.

There are two kinds of people in this world – the master vs. the dabbler. The master is somebody that commits to everything and follows through, whereas the dabbler starts things but never finishes them. Which are you? A lot of people aren't willing to do what it takes in order to make their dreams come true.

Just like any other skill that you want to master, self discipline requires daily effort, willpower, practice, and repetition. Some days you will feel super motivated and committed, while other days you won't want to do anything. All that matters is that you make progress.

Whatever you want to create in life will require that you possess an insane amount of self-control. There is no room for laziness or procrastination on the climb to the top.  In the words of Theodore Rooselvelt, “With self discipline, almost anything is possible.”

Here are 8 powerful ways to master self discipline.

1. Set Clear Goals

When it comes to achieving goals, a lot of people talk a good game but don't know how to follow through. As a result, they aren't able to move forward in life. If you want to achieve self discipline, you've got to have a clear direction of where you are going.

Without a map, it's easy to get lost. Define what your goals mean to you and how you will go about achieving them. If you set vague goals, you will produce vague outcomes. This is why I encourage people to follow the SMART philosophy, which are goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Setting goals that are aligned with this acronym will help you structure your goals in ways that ensure you will achieve them. With any goal that you set, you need to be able to see tangible progress with them, or else your self discipline will wane.

2. Remove Distractions

Sustained concentration is key to getting anything done. Studies show that when we check something our mind requires about 23 minutes of refocusing time to get back on task. If you want to become more self disciplined, I encourage you to remove all distractions.

Make a plan for how you are going to make the things that you crave less available to you. Doing so will reduce the number of times that you feel tempted to cheat on yourself. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, buy healthy food and make it at home. Similarly, if you want to improve your productivity, turn off all technology so that you can get into a flow state.

3. Create Healthy Habits

We've all got bad habits. However, when these bad habits prevent you from achieving success in life, you know that it's time to make a change. I’m a big believer that your habits are a powerful tool for shaping your behavior. Your life is the sum of what you do every single day.

Tom Bilyeu said it best, Taking action is what creates excellence: doing what must be done every single day. No amount of meditation, contemplation, or dreaming will take the place of doing.”

Are you waking up every day with the intention of setting yourself up to win? A lot of people wake up and immediately starting engaging in reactive behaviors, like rushing out the door, eating quickly, etc. In this state of mind, it's easy to fall into conditioned patterns of behavior and lose your discipline and motivation.

A disciplined mind is one that acknowledges the reasons for waking up early. If you want to be super productive, you've got to start your day off right. For me, this means creating an empowering morning ritual where I take care of my mind, body, and soul. Through engaging in success habits, I condition my mindset for success and develop the mental strength that I need to withstand challenges and adversity.

4. Choose Your Environment Wisely

If you want to change yourself, you've first got to change your environment. Your surroundings have a huge impact on the type of person that you become. If you surround yourself with negative people who are lazy and constantly complaining, that energy will rub off on you. You will find yourself struggling to develop the self discipline that you need in order to achieve your goals.

Take a close look at your friends and determine whether or not these people are lifting you up or bringing you down. Jim Rohn once said that “You become the 5 people that you surround yourself with.” If those 5 people lack drive and ambition, they will only drag you down.

I encourage you to create an environment that supports your goals and dreams. When you do, it will be easier for you to practice healthy habits that serve your highest self. As someone once said, “If you make sure that your environment supports your dreams, achieving your dreams becomes radically easier. Whatever you are surrounded by all day – influences you more than you think.”

5. Take Responsibility For Your Life

People who make excuses and who don't take ownership of their choices in life are usually the ones who struggle with self discipline. You are responsible for everything that has happened in your life, both good and bad. A lot of people wait for someone to come along and make difficult decisions for them.

Only you can save you. If you find yourself falling into the blame game and playing the victim, you will never be able to achieve great things in life. You are your own limit. I guarantee that there are no successful people in this world that play the blame game. Instead, they only focus on what is in their control. Instead of complaining about what is going wrong, take action and find a solution.

In his book, No Excuses!: The Power of Self-Discipline, Brian Tracy says, “Your ability to think, plan, and work hard in the short term and to discipline yourself to do what is right and necessary before you do what is fun and easy is the key to creating a wonderful future for yourself.”

If you are struggling to stay motivated, this is one of the best self discipline books to read. It will inspire you to hold yourself responsible for a higher standard of living.

6. Reward Yourself

It's hard to stay disciplined if you never get rewarded for it. When you accomplish a goal, celebrate yourself. Doing so will increase the likelihood that you will stay motivated and work harder.

When you take the time to acknowledge the small milestones that you took towards your goals, you strengthen those actions even more. This is how positive habits stick. Conversely, if you fail to reward yourself, it's your way of telling your mind that there is zero pleasure from engaging in this act.

Rewarding yourself comes down to recognizing your efforts. This is intrinsic motivation at its finest. Focus on being your biggest fan instead of your worst critic. When you show up and achieve something that is deserving of a pat on the back, give yourself one!

7. Be Consistent

Have you ever wondered how some people are able to achieve success, while others don't? In my eyes, the secret is consistency. Everybody has dreams and goals, but if you don't have a consistent plan, you won't go anywhere.

Success isn't an accident. It doesn't happen by luck. Rather, it requires that you wake up every single day and execute. When something doesn't work, you've got to adjust and keep going. If you commit to doing the work over an extended period of time, you will be successful. However, if you only make excuses, you will never be able to achieve self discipline or become a master of your life.

Trust me when I say that there is power in being consistent. When you do something over and over again, you get better at it. It starts to become a part of who you are. If you want to go from good to great in life you can't give up. Instead, you've got to challenge yourself to become the best version of yourself until you reach the top. Discipline always defeats excuses. Don't forget that.

8. Find An Accountability Partner

An accountability partner will hold you accountable for things that you need to get done on a daily basis. As humans, we are social by nature, meaning that we feel a sense of responsibility to one another. It's easy to let yourself down. However, when you let someone else it doesn't feel good.

Think of an accountability partner as your personal cheerleader, someone who is in your corner inspiring you to keep going. In my experience, there is no better way to get things done faster and achieve your goals. Seek out a person whom you trust and that shares the same values as you.

Share with your accountability partner 1-2 things that you want to accomplish in one or more areas of your life. Make a commitment that you will see those things through. You will amaze yourself what a difference this partnership will make to your overall motivation, willpower and self discipline.

I believe that discipline is one of the most important traits that you can develop.

Without the ability to get things done on a continual basis, you will never make progress towards your goals. The difference between the people who achieve greatness versus those that don't is self discipline. Discipline has given me the freedom to live life on my terms and create massive success in every area of my life.

If you make it a priority to flex your discipline muscle every single day, you will become unstoppable. In the words of John C. Maxwell, “Motivation keeps you going, but discipline keeps you growing.”

Discipline is your secret weapon for success. Are you ready to start using it to your advantage?

How To Overcome Fear Of Public Speaking https://projectlifemastery.com/fear-of-public-speaking/ https://projectlifemastery.com/fear-of-public-speaking/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 15:00:05 +0000 http://projectlifemastery.com/?p=7942 The fear of public speaking is one of the most common of fears. Discover how you can overcome this debilitating fear and take back control of your life!

The post How To Overcome Fear Of Public Speaking appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

Do you have a fear of public speaking? If so, you aren’t alone.

The fear of public speaking, otherwise known as, “glossophobia”, is one of the most common of fears. Research shows that 75% of individuals suffer from speech anxiety.

For someone who suffers from this fear, the idea of getting up in front of a group of people can be terrifying. I can relate, because I used to struggle with extreme shyness and social anxiety for many years. The good news is that I was able to overcome my fear, and so can you.

Are you ready to learn how to overcome fear of public speaking and boost your confidence? In the words of W. Clement Stone, “Thinking will not overcome fear, but action will.”

Your fear of public speaking doesn't have to control your life.

Oftentimes, it's the fear of fear itself that holds us back, more than the act of speaking. In my experience, the best way to overcome fear of any kind is by facing it. Stanford neuroscientist Philippe Goldin, who specializes in anxiety disorders believes that exposure is, hands down, the most successful way to deal with phobias, anxiety disorders, and fears of any sort.

Let's explore 4 ways that you can overcome your fear of public speaking.

1. Take Baby Steps

You don’t have to overcome all of your fear at once. Instead, take baby steps. If you have a fear of public speaking get comfortable with a small group of people first, rather than speaking to a large crowd.

For example, maybe you could attend a Toastmasters event once a week. This is a safe, supportive environment where there is no judgment or rejection. Once you get rewarded and encouraged by your peers, you will build up your confidence over time.

2. Practice Mindfulness

When people experience fear of public speaking, oftentimes there is a host of limiting beliefs that underlie their fear. It’s common to catastrophize and ruminate about the actual experience before it's even happened.

Preparing in advance for a speech is important, but try practicing some mindfulness exercises beforehand, like deep breathing or meditation. Mindfulness trains your brain to stay calm and clear. By taking some long, deep breaths and pausing regularly, you will feel more in control of your speech. There is no better way to calm your nerves and reduce performance anxiety.

3. Visualize Your Success

Research has revealed that mental practices for visualizing your success are almost effective as true physical practice. A great mental rehearsal strategy for minimizing your fear of public speaking is to visualize yourself delivering a successful talk or presentation.

Seeing is believing. Close your eyes and picture yourself moving throughout the room, speaking clearly, and having fun. When you visualize the result that you want, it will boost your confidence, creating the momentum that you need to overcome your fear.

4. Reward Yourself

Any time that you take a risk, give yourself a reward because what gets rewarded, gets repeated. Every time that you give a presentation, do something nice for yourself. This will create a positive mental association between speaking and the feeling of pleasure.

As a result, you will be motivated to speak more and achieve bigger goals related to public speaking. Soon enough, your fear of public speaking will fade away.

Anybody can overcome their fear of public speaking.

Public speaking is a skill. It’s important to remember that great public speakers aren’t born. Rather, most of them have trained themselves to perform at their best, through consistent preparation, persistence, and practice.

In the words of Mark Twain, “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.” The world's greatest speakers still get nervous. Don’t beat yourself up. Just be proactive, feel the fear, and do it anyways! Are you ready to transform your fear into fuel?

I want to talk with you about when to upgrade your lifestyle. To upgrade means to raise who you are and what you do to a higher standard.

Dreaming is great, but at the end of the day, it’s the decisions you make that determine your success, health, well-being, love, and happiness in life. The more decisions that you make, the more in control of your destiny you will be.

Look back on your life to date and think about all of the decisions that you’ve made that have led you to where you are today.

If you are currently struggling in life, it is because of the choices that you have made. Stop playing the blame game. You need to take responsibility for your life. You have the power to create your own reality.

I would like to answer a question that a fan named Regina recently asked me on Snapchat. She asked:

“What should I do if I want to change my life? My mother thinks I’m crazy for wanting expensive things that I cannot afford. I feel like a dabbler, but I don’t want to be one.”

Regina, first and foremost, it takes a lot of courage to reach out for help, so I commend you for being vulnerable and sharing your story.

One of the most important decisions that you will ever make is the decision to live well below your means, which means spending less than what you earn. Don’t upgrade your lifestyle if you can’t afford it.

The reason why a lot of millionaires are so successful is that they have ascribed to this way of life. They have made a series of strategic and smart decisions, with regards to their finances.

How do you expect to pay for a lifestyle that you haven’t yet earned? Financial freedom and success takes a lot of hard work, commitment, consistency, and sacrifice. It requires that you add value and create impact in the world. Strive for that, above anything else.

Upgrade your lifestyle only when you are worthy and deserving of it. At that point, you can celebrate and reward yourself.

Rather than wonder how you can upgrade your lifestyle, ask yourself this question: “What actions do I need to take in order to have what I want most in life?” Whether that’s starting a business, saving money, getting a promotion, or proving your worth.

When I was 18 years old I remember reading the book, The Wealthy Barber: Updated 3rd Edition: Everyone's Commonsense Guide to Becoming Financially Independent, which taught me about compounding, putting money aside, investing in mutual funds, etc.

I just put into action what the book told me to do. If people applied what they learned, they would get the results that they desired.

Don’t be a dabbler. Commit to mastery.

A lot of people make short-term decisions and neglect the long-term consequences. These people are known as dabblers. They start something, but they never finish it.

They think short-term, and expect instant gratification, without having to put in the work. If you operate this way, I guarantee that you will always make poor decisions in life.

I never make impulsive decisions. If anything, I’m more conservative with the decisions that I make. Sure, I take risks here and there, but for the most part, I’m hyper-aware of how I choose to spend the money that I have.

I used to live in a small apartment in downtown Vancouver and at that time, I was doing a lot of online marketing and was doing pretty well financially. In 2012 I was making $100,000/year, but you didn’t see it based on my quality of life because I was saving and investing my money.

I always focus on achieving specific milestones before I upgrade my life. It may be once I’ve saved a certain amount of money or reached a certain level of my investment portfolio.

I am continuously striving to upgrade my lifestyle, but I do so in small increments. When I master one level, I strive for the next. In doing so, I am constantly making improvements in my life and my business, which allows me to achieve and become more.

Always keep your ultimate vision for your life in mind when you make decisions. I have been able to achieve so much success in my life because I am always focusing on my future.

Regina, I challenge you to sit down and write out your vision and goals for your life, because that is what is going to determine the actions that you take, like whether or not you go to school, start a business, or get a coach.

You also need to determine what your core life values are. Dig deep and ask yourself questions. Above all, commit to investing and learning.

That is the best way to discover who you are and what is most important to you. It will give you the clarity that you need in order to make good decisions in life.

Regina, the best way to upgrade your lifestyle, is to downsize it. If you take this route, you will achieve success faster. I know that this sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true. Set goals, believe in yourself, keep growing, and take action.

In the words of Napoleon, “Action is the true measure of intelligence.” You have your whole future in front of you. Make the right decisions now, and you will set yourself up for success for the rest of your life.

The post How To Develop Habits Of Success appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

I want to teach you how to develop habits of success. Your success in life is determined, in part, by the decisions that you make on a daily basis, otherwise known as your habits.

Habits are powerful. They define who we are, and in doing so, have the ability to control the direction that our lives take. We are driven to seek routines in our daily lives because they are deemed as ‘safe.’ New habits that pose as a threat to our sense of security can be stressful.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Any new habit takes time, commitment and hard work to develop. However, once you do something consistently, it becomes easier to integrate it into your daily life.

A new study from MIT neuroscientists has found that a small region of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, where most thought and planning occurs, is responsible for moment-by-moment control of which habits are switched on at a given time. This study offers hope that it is possible to break bad habits.

In the words of Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Are you ready to break your bad habits and replace them with habits of success?

Below are 3 strategies that will help you develop habits of success:

1. Change One Habit At A Time

Changing one routine requires an immense amount of willpower and commitment, let alone multiple ones. A lot of people struggle with building new habits because they make them either too big or too difficult.

There have been extensive studies that show that it’s impossible to change multiple habits because ego depletion kicks in, which leaves our willpower in a mentally weakened state. I believe that the best time to develop new habits of success is the morning, as part of your morning ritual. This is when your willpower is the strongest.

The best way to integrate new habits into your life is to make small, incremental changes every day. In the words of Seth Godin, “Your audacious life goals are fabulous. We're proud of you for having them. But it's possible that those goals are designed to distract you from the thing that's really frightening you—the shift in daily habits that would mean a re–invention of how you see yourself.”

2. Commit To A 30 Day Challenge

Committing to a 30 day challenge is a great way to develop habits of success. Research shows that it requires a minimum of 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to jell. It will take the same amount of time for a new habit to develop.

I’ve done 30 day challenges around exercising, waking up early, scheduling my time, and building my business. Every day I practice and develop one habit. By the end of that 30 days, the habit has successfully integrated itself into my daily life.

An accountability partner helps you stay committed to your 30 day challenge. He or she will motivate you to achieve the goal(s) that you set for yourself. Bob Proctor said it best, “Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to results.”

I created a 30 day morning ritual challenge for my Morning Ritual Mastery course members, wherein which over a 30 day period I have them make a daily post on their social media about the one habit that they carried out as part of their morning ritual. Having a support network in place is a powerful way to form healthy, long-lasting habits.

3. Reward Yourself

Every time you do something positive, celebrate yourself. An action needs to be repeated in order for it to become a habit, which is why it’s really important that you reward yourself each time you practice a new habit.

When you take time every day to acknowledge the small actions that you took towards your goals, you strengthen those actions. Whatever you reward, gets repeated.

In the words of Jonas Salk, “The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more.”

These are 3 strategies that will help you develop habits of success. Positive habits create the energy that fuels success in life. Commit to having daily morning rituals. One positive change in your life will motivate you to implement even more habits. It all begins with one small win!

I would like to share with you some money management tips for getting out of debt. Debt is no fun, and the emotional burden that it can create in peoples’ lives can be overwhelming. Henrik Ibsen said it best, “Home life ceases to be free and beautiful as soon as it is founded on borrowing and debt.”

Have you ever wondered why so many people have outrageous debt? A large reason is due to the lack of having a well-disciplined budget and financial life.

Managing your money doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s about knowing how you are using your money. How would your life change if you were free of debt? Make a decision to get rid of it, once and for all.

Below are 5 money management tips for getting out of debt:

1. Be Aware of And Accept Your Debt

One of the most difficult things to do when first getting on the debt pay-off journey, is to truly accept your debt. Oftentimes, the reality of debt is too painful to acknowledge or accept, so the natural response is to avoid that it exists. I speak from personal experience.

When I was in my early 20’s, I was in a lot of debt. I had to make sacrifices in order to manage my money more efficiently and become debt-free. It was the acceptance of my reality that allowed me to make a change in my life. If you are serious about becoming debt-free, you need to acknowledge its existence. Be proactive. Don’t live in fear. Instead, take action.

2. Decide To Change your Spending Habits

Making a decision implies that you are about to take action. When you make the decision to change your spending habits, you are halfway there to financial freedom! Saving money is about changing spending habits. What are your spending habits?

In order to become debt-free, you need to address the actual money management habits that you are struggling with, that led to the debt in the first place. Ramona Pearson, a certified public accountant and personal financial advisor said that “Money habits are formulated at a very young age for most people.” Take the time to figure out why you're spending habits are the way they are.

Sure enough, this is the reason why a lot of people that win the lottery end up losing it all. They don't take the time to develop the discipline in order to manage their money properly.

Focus on cutting your expenses or your overhead in some way. This will allow you to have some extra cash flow every month. Then, you can use that cash flow to start paying off your debt.

3. Track Your Expenses

If you want to free yourself from debt, you need to start tracking your expenses. The best way to work out what you spend your money on and how much you have left at the end of every month, is to keep a record of all your expenses.

According to Pick The Brain, for two weeks you should write everything down that you spend. Record the time, the place, and how much it costs. Doing so will help you identify your spending patterns.

If you haven’t done something like this before, there is a good chance that you will shock yourself. How often do you track your money? If the answer is never, it’s time to get out a calculator and start doing the math!

4. Don’t Spend What You Earn

Once you start making money, don’t be tempted to spend MORE money. This is where people get themselves into trouble. You have to discipline yourself to NOT engage in this behaviour.

In his book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!, Robert Kiyosaki said, “Invest in assets, not liabilities.” An asset is something that puts money into your pocket, while a liability is something that takes money out of your pocket. Which category does everything in your life fall into?

If you can’t manage the money that you currently have, then there is no point making more money. If you adopt the mindset that making MORE money will be the answer to your debt issues, you are wrong. This is a recipe for disaster.

5. Reward Yourself

Adjusting to a new style of living involves sacrifice. Breaking bad habits, especially when it comes to spending money, is hard work. This is why it’s important that you reward yourself when you have practiced self-discipline.

Be kind to yourself and engage in mini-celebrations, now and then. Why? Because the MORE that you acknowledge and reward yourself for your successes, the more success you will have.

Charles Duhigg, New York Times reporter and author of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Businesssaid “First, you have to pick a cue, like every single time that you get a pay check, you’ll move 5% of it into savings.” The key to making your habit stick is to give yourself a reward every time that you engage in a positive behaviour.

Debt is debt, but don’t feel that you have to punish yourself because of it. Honour the small achievements that you make every day, on your journey towards financial freedom. How you choose to manage and spend your money can have a profound impact on your life. I encourage you to follow these money management tips for getting out of debt.

Your ability to make good money decisions will end up shaping the direction that your life will take. Are you ready to be free of debt? Take control of your financial future now!

I would like to share with you how to accelerate mastery. This occurs through a process known as positive reinforcement, which was proposed by a behavioral psychologist by the name of B.F. Skinner. In operant conditioning, positive reinforcement works by presenting a motivating/reinforcing stimulus to a person after the desired behavior is exhibited, making the behavior more likely to happen in the future. You may be wondering, “How does this theory apply to mastery?”

Whenever you do something positive, you need to reward yourself for it. When you do, that behavior will repeat itself. That is how to accelerate mastery. Similar to animals, humans respond better to positive versus negative reinforcement. In the book, Don’t Shoot The Dog!: The New Art of Teaching and Training, the author talks about how positive reinforcement is the best way to train an animal and a human being.

Unfortunately, many people struggle with inner dialogues that take on negative connotations.  Your beliefs about who you are shape your entire life and they have a direct influence on your behavior. In the words of James Allen, “The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to reflect their inner beliefs.”

In the book, Great Negotiating Skills (Business Solution Series), the author expresses that constant negative reinforcement that is created by negative self-talk, results in the creation of limiting beliefs.  If you want to live a life of mastery, you need to first identify and change the limiting beliefs that are holding you back from stepping into your power. Are your beliefs limiting you? If so, you aren’t alone.

All of us are too hard on ourselves. We need to celebrate our accomplishments more and acknowledge our strengths. In the words of Brene Brown, “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” If you associate pain and struggle with what it is that you want to manifest into your life, your brain will block it out and stop trying.  Your mind will always find a story or a belief that doesn’t fulfill your highest self.

If you want to change a limiting belief into an empowering one, you need to recondition your mind to think high vibrational, positive thoughts. That is how to accelerate mastery.  The good news is that once you start seeing results in your life, you create a new set of beliefs about yourself, and soon thereafter, other people start to reinforce your identity even further. It becomes a domino effect.

We have all heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect”, but there is now science to back it up. Research shows that nerve pathways are strongest in those who have mastered a skill. When we learn a new skill, we are changing how our brain is wired on a deep level. Through the process of practice and repetition, we are actually helping our brains optimize for a new set of coordinated activities, through a process called myelination (Shen, 2014). This research proves that if you want to improve your performance, practice frequently. In the words of Earl Nightingale, “Whatever we plant in our subconscious and nurture with repetition and emotion will one day become reality.”

Acknowledge and celebrate yourself more often, and reinforce everything that you do. That is how to accelerate mastery.  Make the choice to commit your life to mastery. It is the recipe for success, happiness, and fulfillment.
