There are 3 things I wish I knew in my early 20's.

As I reflect upon where I am today, it's amazing to see how much I have changed. I'm so grateful for the lessons that I learned along the way because they made me who I am.

However, if I was given the opportunity to do my 20's all over again, there are things that I would have done differently.

I share my insights, in the hopes that it will prevent you from making the same mistakes that I did.

Are you ready to learn what I wish my 20-year-old self knew?

Let's be honest… your early 20's can be a tumultuous time.

It requires that you start evaluating where you currently are and make plans for where you want to be. Unfortunately, not every 20-year-old has it all figured out, nor should they.

Nevertheless, you are expected to start doing things like, go to school, find a real job, move out of your parent's house, and find your life purpose, all the while trying to figure out who you are. Stressful, right? It doesn't have to be.

I want to share with you 3 things that I wish I knew in my early 20's.

1. You Don't Have To Know All The Answers

If you are in your 20's and don't yet know what your career path should be, that's OK! It's easy to compare yourself to others and think, “I need to be doing what they are doing.” It can be frustrating when it seems like everyone around you is making progress, while you are still stuck in one place with no sense of direction.

However, comparing yourself to others is a losing battle. Research shows that the happiest people aren’t those who only make positive comparisons with others. They are those who don’t make any. Instead of feeling like you aren't measuring up to others, reframe how you feel. Use your comparisons as motivators that help you grow and improve yourself.

Nobody has everything figured out in their 20's. When you are that young, you don't have enough life experience and wisdom to have clarity around who you are and what you want to do with your life. When you are young, you can afford to experiment and make mistakes because you have your entire life ahead of you. This is how you will identify what your strengths, weaknesses, interests, and passions are.

2. Life Is A Journey, Not A Destination

It sounds cliché, but it's true. When I was in my early 20's, I had the illusion that, once I had a girlfriend, built a successful business, and became a millionaire, all of the sudden my life would be perfect. All that you get from accomplishing external events in life is a temporary moment of pleasure, satisfaction, and gratification.

However, trust me when I say that this high does not last. A new study reveals that thinking about whether you're happy or setting a lofty goal for your own happiness is a major buzzkill. Instead of planning your happiness, you need to embrace spontaneity.

Learn how to enjoy the journey and the process of becoming more. You don't have to ride the pain train as I did. I used to constantly beat myself up because I was never where I wanted to be. As a result, I wasn't able to be present. This is a horrible strategy for changing your life.

Soon enough, your brain thinks, “Why even bother?” This mindset is not sustainable. You need to understand that this moment is all that you have. If you can't enjoy today, you won't be able to experience fulfillment once you have all the things you want. Focus on what you already have because there are so many things to be grateful for.

3. You Have Your Whole Life Ahead Of You

Your youth is one of your biggest advantages in life. In your early 20's you have the opportunity to break bad habits and replace them with healthy ones. You are more moldable because you have yet to develop negative patterns of behaviors that have already been conditioned for many years.

As you age, you become more comfortable with a certain way of being. As a result, it becomes more challenging to shift your way of thinking and behaving. The beliefs and habits that you develop at a young age will support you later on in your life in incredible ways. The younger that you start, the sooner that you will receive the benefits.

This is why I encourage you to build the foundation for your life early on – commit to lifelong learning, take risks, and try everything. You've got your whole life ahead of you. Don't sweat it if you don't have it all figured out right away. All that matters is that you take action.

These are 3 things I wish I knew in my 20's.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that if you don't figure these things out that you are lost or not going in the right direction. Instead, if you are able to integrate and apply this wisdom into your own life, I believe that you will be in a better position to thrive.

I'm grateful for all of the lessons I've learned and so should you. The beauty of it all is that I’m still learning. We all are. In fact, I still add to my list, knowing that every day is an opportunity to become a better version of myself.

What is something that you wish you knew in your early 20's?

Fail your way towards success. I bet you don't hear that every day. It seems counterintuitive, right? Stay with me.

From an early age, we are taught that failure is a bad thing. In school, A's equal success, whereas F's equal failure. As a result, we try to avoid failure at all costs.

We have been conditioned to believe that the only way to succeed is if you win. However, that's not how life works. As the famous saying goes, “If you've never failed, then you've never lived.” The reality is that, in order to succeed in life, you need to fail more.

Failure is life's greatest teacher. The most memorable of triumphs are the ones where we had to lose everything in order to find ourselves again; where we had to push our limits and do the impossible in order to realize the infinite potential that resides inside of us.

You are supposed to fail.

I don't care what anyone says. Failure is the stepping stone to success in life. You don't become a bigger, better and stronger version of yourself by hanging out in your comfort zone and never trying anything new. Sometimes scaring ourselves senseless is the only way to create your call to action.

In his book, Celebrating Failure: The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes and Thinking Big, author Ralph Health says that “The quickest road to success is to possess an attitude towards failure of “no fear.”

Just because you fail, that doesn't mean that you are a failure. Our ego would try and prove us otherwise. As soon as things start going wrong, many of us immediately want to run for the hills. Why would we want to consciously something that doesn't feel good? I get it, but you will never know how amazing you can be unless you risk it all and try.

We've all experienced failure. It's not fun to admit that we've failed at something, but knowing that we have all been there lessens life's blows. We tend to forget that the most successful people in this world didn't get to where they are today because of luck. They failed multiple times, but the only difference between them and the rest of the world is that they stood back up and tried again.

Take Michael Jordan as an example. He was cut from his high school basketball team and missed over 9,000 shots in his career. Did he give up? Hell no.

Failure is a part of his success story. He didn't get to where he is today without making mistakes. In the words of Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert – “The universe has plenty of luck to go around; you just need to keep your hand raised until it’s your turn. It helps to see failure as a road and not a wall.”

You know you are truly failing in life when you aren't trying. That means that you aren't even in the game. Trust me when I say that you don't create an epic life by sitting on the sidelines. Nothing good ever happens there.

Don't get me wrong… I'm not preaching that you should go out into the world and fail at anything and everything. You want to make sure that your failures are small and manageable. Don't allow them to destroy your life, because those are the failures that are hard to recover from. Similarly, I encourage you to have a system for tracking your failures so that you know what not to repeat. This is especially important if you run an online business. Mistakes can cost you a lot of money if you aren't careful.

I've failed thousands of times and I will most likely fail more in the future. I'm OK with that because I view failure as a good thing. To fail means that I am experimenting with life and figuring out what works and what doesn't work. Failure is merely an experiment that didn’t work out.

The next time that you fail, congratulate yourself, learn from it and keep moving forward.

You just got one step closer to becoming the best version of yourself. It's all about shifting your perspective. Living a purpose-driven life requires that you screw up and embrace the unknown. When you change your definition of failure and view it as a path to success, there is nothing that will stand in your way of achieving your goals.

What are you waiting for? Start failing your way towards success!

If you’re afraid of making mistakes, I’m here to help you conquer that fear. Mistakes are a normal part of life. We all fall short from time to time.

Unfortunately, failure is often frowned up, and is associated with feelings of anger and shame. The truth is that the journey towards success is paved with failures that test our ability to rise above disappointment or flounder in self-pity.

It all comes down to your mindset. Research shows that people who adopt a growth mindset are more likely to be able to accept mistakes because they know that they are a key part of the learning process.

If you’re afraid of making mistakes, don’t be. The truth is that if you want to succeed, you need to fail more often, because it is through failure that you learn some of your most valuable lessons in life.

In the words of Tony Robbins, “No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.”

Many people live and act in ways to ensure that they never make mistakes. They don’t take risks or step outside of their comfort zones for fear that they will fail. In doing so, they never take action or look forward.

When I was 17 years old I didn’t think that my life was going anywhere. I was shy, depressed, didn’t have any friends, and would drown my sorrows in video games. I was comfortable living inside of my bubble, and I wasted away my days. This was a big mistake.

It wasn’t until I took the leap, experimented with new things, made mistakes, and did the very things that I thought I could never do, that I was able to become the person that I am today.

In her latest book, Stop Playing Safe: Rethink Risk, Unlock the Power of Courage, Achieve Outstanding Success, Margie Warrell says that, In today’s competitive and fast changing workplace, we can never hope to achieve success unless we're willing to embrace change and risk the discomfort of failure.”

In truth, failure can be one of your greatest assets, if you allow it to be. Success is merely an experiment that manifests itself through a process of trial and error.

I can’t promise you that everything is always going to work out. Life doesn’t play out that way. It is designed to challenge you so that you can grow into the person you desire to be.

You always have a choice. You can either fall apart and become a victim, or you can rise above and become a victor. You cannot control your external world, but you can control how you choose to respond to it.

The most successful people in the world see mistakes as valuable learning experiences that allow them to become stronger and more successful. They pride themselves on their failures. Take it from Jeff Bezos, the Founder of Amazon – “I've made billions of dollars of failures at Amazon.com. Literally billions of dollars of failures.”

Just because something doesn’t work out like you planned, doesn’t mean that you are a failure. It simply means that you tried something and it didn’t work, and that is OK. If you’re afraid of making mistakes, you won’t grow.

Stay committed and learn from your mistakes. See every setback in life as an opportunity to learn, to grow, and become a better version of yourself.

Thomas Watson Sr., the original Chairman and CEO of IBM, once said, “The fastest way to succeed is to double your failure rate.” Are you making enough mistakes? Experiment more, fail more, and I promise that you will succeed faster.

The process of mastery requires commitment, perseverance, and consistency.

In order to achieve mastery, you need to learn to fall in love with the process.

Creating a morning ritual is one of the most powerful things that you can do in order to master all the areas of your life. How you start your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Having a morning ritual is essential to my success. It provides me with the inspiration and momentum that I need in order to master my day.

When you start your day with healthy habits and focusing on what is important in your life, you consciously take actions towards creating the life that you desire.

Nourishing my mind, body, and spirit every morning is essential to how I will respond to things that happen throughout my day. When I am mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually strong, I am unstoppable. We can learn a lot from the morning routines of successful people.  They have mastered a specific set of rituals.

For example, during an interview with Oprah, Tony Robbins expressed that the key to maintaining his positivity begins with a 10-minute ritual that he does each morning. In the words of Tony, “If you don't have 10 minutes, you don't have a life”.

If morning rituals are so great, then why don’t more people have them? We are defined by the habits that we create in our lives. Most people have trouble with habits because they don’t follow a morning routine for sticking to them. Research shows that our brains work on a trigger and reward basis, the so-called “habit loop”, which means that it is easy to slip into a routine and difficult to fight back when the undesired behaviour occurs (Dhanoa, 2016).

Breaking bad habits requires willpower and commitment. Jim Rohn once said, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” There are always going to be challenges and obstacles that show up in your life. How you handle those challenges is reflective of your emotional state.

Therefore, your success in life depends on your ability to effectively manage your emotions. The process of mastery requires that you experiment, fail, and make mistakes. That is how you learn and grow. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

I welcome failure. I make mistakes every day in my business. In doing so, I learn valuable lessons, which ensures that I don’t make the same mistakes again. So many people are afraid to take a risk for fear that they will fail – these people are known as ‘dabblers'.

They stay in their comfort zone because it’s safe, however growth and comfort are not synonymous with one another. Alternatively, masters are comfortable being uncomfortable.   They welcome challenges, and see them as opportunities to grow and expand.

When they fall, they pick themselves up and keep moving. Developing a morning ritual that primes you for success can determine the direction that your life will take. Become the best version of YOU. The process of mastery requires that you do so.

Do you want to know the secret to success?  Fail more.

Yes, you heard me. The most successful people in the world fail, often. They possess a growth mindset, which means that they view failure as an opportunity for growth.  In doing so, they achieve mastery in all areas of their life.

People are so afraid to try new things for fear that they will fail. Why? Because we are taught from an early age that failure is the result of a lack of ability, so we avoid making mistakes for fear of embarrassment.

You need to realize that failure is your greatest asset, because it tells you what works and what doesn’t work.

I make mistakes every day in my business.   In doing so, I learn valuable lessons, which ensures that I don’t make the same mistakes again in the future. Why do so many people stay in their comfort zone? Because it's comfortable. Research shows that your comfort zone is a behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk.

Arnold Shwarzennegger understood that this commitment to excruciating failure wasn't for everyone: “This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That's what most people lack: having the guts to go on and just say they'll go through the pain, no matter what happens.”

You can only grow if you are willing to try new things.  Growth demands that you fail more. There is a sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. When it comes to failure, don’t play the blame game.   You are the master of your emotions.

You cannot control the outside world, but you can control your inner world. Jonathan Martensson said that, “Emotions are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf”. Fear is a powerful, and sometimes crippling emotion. You need to learn how to use fear to your advantage so that you can achieve your goals.

How do you this?  By turning fear on its head. Instead of letting it destroy you, let it push you forward. Fear can become a powerful motivator, if you allow it to be. The more that you are willing to experiment and try new things in your business, the more successful that you will become.

Don’t be afraid to take a risk and try new things so that you can grow, improve and move forward. In the words of Tony Robbins, “Focus on where you want to go, not on what you fear”. If you want to succeed, fail more.

If you want to achieve success in your business and in your life, you need to experiment more and fail more.

Society has taught us that failure is bad; that if we fail, we aren’t good enough, but the opposite is true. The reality is that the only time you truly fail is when you don’t try.  You need to embrace the possibility of failure.

So many people are afraid to take a risk, for fear that they will fail, but failure is your greatest asset – it tells you what worked and what didn’t work.

Failure is merely an experiment that didn’t work out.

The more that you are willing to try new things, the more successful that you will become. When you learn failure in one area of your life, you can apply those lessons to other areas of your life as well. I can’t promise you that everything is going to work out. That is part of the trial and error process.

However, if you are committed and determine enough, you will learn from your mistakes and receive the benefit and value that challenges provide. There is not one successful person that I know that has not experienced failure.  Failure builds resilience. When we are able to overcome obstacles and challenges, we become stronger.

Oftentimes your greatest failures become steppingstones to success. Thomas Edison said it best – “I haven’t failed.  I've just found 10,000 ways that wont work”. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Embrace and learn from every experience so that you can thrive in your business and in your life.
