eCommerce sales reached $196 billion in the first quarter of 2021. If you're sitting there thinking, “Wait, is that even possible, given the current state of the global economy?” The answer is yes! As a result, she was able to leverage her success with her second and third products. Because Tatiana was so young when she started her Amazon business, she had a naive way of going about things.

In actuality, this mindset worked to her advantage. She didn't worry about what could go wrong, which is the trap that I see so many people fall into. Instead, she took massive action on what she was taught and focused on what could go right. Yes, she made mistakes along the way, some of which were costly.

However, mistakes come with the territory of being an entrepreneur.

All that matters is how you respond to the mistakes you make. Researchers from The Chinese University of Hong Kong identified two types of responses after making a mistake: blaming approach and problem-solving approach. While the blaming approach leads to destructive behaviors, the problem-solving approach leads to new insights and smarter ways of working.

Not surprisingly, taking the latter approach is the best option. Failures are the stepping stones to success. Make it your goal to fail forward, meaning that you find the lessons in every mistake. This is what ensures that you don't make the same mistakes twice and that you are able to transform challenges into opportunities for growth.

When you start an online business you don't have to know how to do everything right away. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “You don't need to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Start small, learn as much as you can, take action, and move onto the next thing. From personal experience, I can tell you that building your eCommerce business with a long-term perspective from the onset will be key to your success.

One thing is for sure… COVID-19 has changed the world and eCommerce has been forced to evolve with it. More and more people are shopping online and will continue to do so. Now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity.

Selling on Amazon is a life-changing business opportunity.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon still managed to experience massive success in 2020. They made $108.5 billion in net sales in the first quarter of 2021. That’s a 44 percent increase from the $75.5 billion reported in the first quarter of last year.

Amazon is one of the fastest-growing industries and its growth is only beginning. There is no better time to leverage the power of Amazon. Matt Clark knows how to make money on Amazon. By the age of 26, he had already built three multi-million dollar companies.

In our interview, he talks about the steps that he took to build his eCommerce brand to $2M per month in 2 years. Also, he shares details about the new and improved ASM training program called ASM Evolution. Let's dive in!

How did you start your eCommerce business and what kind of results have you achieved from it?

I sell a healthy brand of coffee called LifeBoost. I've been doing eCommerce since 2009. Over the years, I've sold a lot of different types of products. Eventually, I started teaching people how to build 7-figure eCommerce businesses.

That's where Amazing.com originated from. That business grew really fast. A lot of lives were changed from the Amazing Selling Machine. As a result, I didn't have time to start my own eCommerce business.

Finally, when I got some more free time I decided to pursue it. I love drinking coffee, and I'm also really health conscious. I had the desire to develop an organic and healthy coffee option that I could sell. At the time, a good friend of mine had a coffee business.

I tried his product and I loved it.

However, he wasn't driving a lot of new sales to his business. That being said, the people who were buying his product kept buying from him every single month. I told him that I wanted to help him grow his business.

We agreed that if I was able to get the business to a certain point, I would own a certain percentage of the company. At the beginning of 2019, we started working together. At the beginning of 2019, we were making $ 17,000 per month in sales.

By the end of 2019, we were making $600,000 per month. As of last month, we made $2.1 million in sales on Shopify alone. 

For people who are looking to build an eCommerce business from scratch, would you suggest that they sell on Amazon, Shopify, or both?

I would pick one platform to start with. My business partner and I have been doing eCommerce selling for a combined total of 20+ years. We had to pick a battle. At the time, my partner was only selling on Shopify.

Once we started getting consistent results on Shopify (18 months), we transitioned over to Amazon.

If you're just starting, I recommend starting on Amazon. You get access to hundreds of millions of their customers. Amazon takes care of so much in your Amazon business. However, I still suggest that you start a brand. When you do that, you can successfully sell on Amazon, Shopify, and your website.

Why do you believe in the power of building a brand?

The kind of approach that a lot of people take when it comes to selling on Amazon is to make short-term money. From the beginning, I adopted the mindset that I wanted to build a business that produced consistent cash flow that could one day be sold.

It never made sense to build something that would only make me short-term money. Our approach has always been to teach people how to build a consistent long-term business. In the eCommerce world, the best way to do that is by building a brand that you own and control. We've proven that this path works.

On June 1st, one of our ASM members sold their brand for millions of dollars.

They did this by following our model and building a brand. I don't think they could have accomplished this goal had they not followed the path of building a long-term brand with high-quality products. An acquirer wants predictability. 

Which marketing channels have allowed you to scale to $2M per month?

The main ones that have allowed us to scale have been Facebook and Instagram ads. We spend $400,000-$500,000 per month on ads. It's our main source of new customers. With Amazon, you are targeting keywords. Conversely, on your website, you're doing interruption marketing.

Essentially, someone is scrolling through their feed on Instagram or Facebook. You are trying to grab their attention and convince them to click on your page and buy from you.

Before we marketed our product we had to figure out why people would buy from us. We all had theories. Once we determined which ideas were the best, we designed a landing page and matched that with our ad so that we could test our different ideas.

Once we figured out which idea was performing the best, we tested different headlines or angles within the theme that we chose. That allowed us to figure out how we would convince people to buy. Also, we had to determine what offer would get the most money out of the right kind of people. 

Recently, my good friend, Ezra Firestone, shared a really powerful point with me. He believes that no matter how good of a job that you do selling a product on the first go, 75% of your customers are never coming back.

Thus, you've got to make as much money as you can from them the first time that they buy from you.

We had to figure out what would allow us to get a high enough conversation rate and a high enough average order value that would make our product successful. We tested 20-30 different combinations. Once we figured out the main angle, the main headline, and the main offer combination, that's when we were off to the races. 

That's been the main way that we've gotten new customers. We back all of that up with great email marketing after people buy. We want to nurture those relationships and reinforce their buying decisions.

Lastly, we also provide a subscription, which is 40% of our sales. Our model is to get people in the door, once. The right kind of person will love our product and want to buy from us again and again.

We are constantly adding new products to increase revenue. Apart from Facebook and Instagram, recently we've added a lot of other channels, like Amazon, Google Adwords, YouTube, Snapchat, and Pinterest.

Can you share some details about what people can expect from the latest version of Amazing Selling Machine, ASM evolution?

As I expressed earlier, our goal has always been to help people build a long-term business. A lot has changed since the launch of ASM in 2012. The long-term approach has stayed the same, but how you get there has changed.

The reason why we created a sub-name for ASM called ASM Evolution is that we think that is necessary to evolve the Amazon business model. We reached out to our members who have experienced massive success on Amazon.

On those calls, we asked them if they had been adopting different strategies than the ones we taught.

We started to see commonalities. Based on what we learned, we decided to redesign the ASM training program. ASM Evolution is focused on building a tight-knit brand. It's not about selling a lot of cheap or expensive products.

Rather, it's about selling 2-4 tightly-knit products. This version of the program is focused on helping you build a brand from the onset. All of the training is 100% new. We include a lot of cool software.

What advice would you give to someone who is brand new to online business and wants to get started selling on Amazon?

First, dive in and learn as fast as possible. Don't be somebody who decides to do everything on their own. I recommend learning from other peoples' experiences, as well as your own. That is how you will achieve results faster.

When I first started my business I had a little bit of savings. Thus, I was able to take the full leap into my business, even though I had no idea what I was doing. However, if you don't have this luxury, that is OK.

There are a lot of Amazon success stories of people who didn't start with a lot of money.

It took them longer to achieve the success that they desired, but they did it. If that's your situation, do it! There is no way to get the results that you want without putting in the time and effort to learn and take action.

Secondly, don't stress too much about the outcome. Have a general idea of how much you want to make, but don't get attached to that number. Show up every day and do the work. Keep learning and working hard.

Finally, get around other people who are either more successful than you or as motivated as you. If you surround yourself with entrepreneurial minds who want to be successful, you'll become that person as well!

Amazon sellers struggle with having enough cash flow.

Amazon's two-week payout cycle does nothing but stifles the growth and scalability of your Amazon business. Delaying new orders due to a lack of cash flow can mean your products sell out, which means running out of inventory.

If you run out of stock, customers can't buy your product. This means dissatisfied customers, which is a no-no with Amazon. In fact, Amazon can penalize you when this happens. Your Amazon listing can drop down in rankings, which means less organic sales.  You want to avoid doing this at all costs.

Payability is a financing company that helps Amazon sellers and other eCommerce sellers address their cash flow issues. Since the beginning of 2020 alone, Payability has provided over $1 billion in funding to eCommerce sellers.

Even if you're selling on Shopify, eBay, Walmart, or another platform, Payability has a solution for this, known as Instant Access.

This feature allows you to get your payout in as fast as 24 hours. Thus, you no longer have to wait two weeks to receive your money. You can purchase more inventory faster, improve your current product(s), hire people, launch a new product on Amazon, or invest in marketing/advertising.

Let's say that you made $10,000 in sales on Amazon. Tomorrow you can receive 80% of that. The remaining 20% is reserved to cover returns and chargebacks and will be released to you in two weeks. This is a huge game-changer for Amazon sellers.

To set up your Payability account and take advantage of Instant Access, you need to show proof that you have been selling on Amazon for at least 3 months. Also, on average you have to be making $2,000 in monthly sales over a 3 month period.

Setting up a Payability account is fast and easy.

This is not a loan, so there are no credit checks involved. Your eligibility is based on the history and performance of your Amazon Seller Central account. There is a 1-2% fee that is based on your gross sales.

Another amazing feature of Payability is something called Instant Advance. They will buy up to $250,000 of future receivables from you, upfront, and at a discount.

The traditional route for getting funding for your Amazon business is to get a loan. If you take this route, you will have to pay interest on the loan, which can impact your credit score. Secondly, you would need to find an investor and give up some of the equity of your Amazon business.

You don't need to do any of this with Payability. Once you are approved by them, you will receive your Amazon funds in 24 hours. A typical advance would be 75-150% of your 1-month sales revenue.

Do you mind sharing your story and how you discovered reverse sourcing wholesaling?

When I was fresh out of high school, I wasn't able to attend a big university because I couldn't afford it. I attended community college. When I got my diploma, I started a decent-paying job making $40,000 per year. I thought I was rich at the time. After 2-3 years, I started getting resentful about my job.

I wasn't getting paid what I deserved and I felt smarter than some of the people who were making way more money than I was. At the time, Dan, my now business partner, reached out to me and told me how excited he was about an Amazon opportunity that he came across.

After 30 minutes, I was sold on the opportunity.

Dan started his Amazon business with an investment of $600 and I eventually partnered with him. That's how we got started. In the beginning, our Amazon business was arbitrage-based. This means that we would drive around the southeastern part of the U.S. and stop at every Walmart we could find.

We would go to the clearance section of the store while browsing Amazon on our phones. The goal was to find things that we could buy on clearance, and then resell those products on Amazon at a profit. Believe it or not, we made $1 million in sales per year doing this.

The problem with the arbitrage model is that you have to work a lot and spend a lot of time on the road. Ultimately, we found a better way, known as reverse sourcing wholesaling. Instead of traditional wholesaling which uses wholesalers and distributors to find products that may be selling well on Amazon, we look on Amazon to find our products.

We created a simple mathematical formula where we can determine with very good accuracy how much money we can make if we are selling a product on Amazon. With that information, we go straight to the source. This means that we reach out to the brand owner or legal rights owner of the product itself.

We get approval from the owner to be an authorized reseller of their product on Amazon.

Once that happens, we improve their sales, to the point where they want to work with us in an exclusive capacity. This means that we are the only person who is selling their product on Amazon. That is when you see the power of our business model in action. Some of our wholesale contracts are worth $1 million.

What kind of success have you experienced thus far?

Within six months of starting, our Amazon business was one hundred percent wholesale. We had completely replaced the income that we were making from our arbitrage business. By the end of our first year, we had more than tripled our revenue.

In our first year of wholesale, we made $3.5 million in sales. The next year, we made $6 million in sales. In total, we've made well over $30 million in sales on Amazon. It's been a wild ride.

When you find a wholesaler that wants you to sell their product on Amazon, what are the next steps?

The way that eCommerce has traditionally worked is that you have two different kinds of people – those who make a product and those who sell a product. Very rarely are they the same person. That is the relationship that has always existed, and it still does. We work with successful brands and manufacturers of products.

They don't sell their products. Rather, they rely on people like us to retail their products. That's the way their business has always worked. They have a set amount of money that they are willing to work with as an Amazon seller or retail partner. If you know what to say to brands and what value you can offer as a retail partner, you will be one of the few people who have access to them.

Let me give you an example of how we add value to brands.

There are endless examples of well-established brands that have huge customer bases, but they have really bad listings. We convert listings that may get 1,000 sales per month into a high-converting one that gets 3,000 sales per month.

That's basically what we are offering to brands. We are showing brands all of the simple things that they can do better. A lot of brands don't know anything about Amazon. That's why they need people like us.

Is this a good model for people who want to make some passive income on the side?

You can get into this version of wholesale with as little as $2,000. You can buy as much inventory as you want. You're not forced to buy a certain amount. Private labeling has a higher ceiling for success. However, it's also riskier.

Conversely, wholesale has a lower ceiling in terms of your margins. However, your floor is higher in that it's less risky. With wholesale, you're only selling established products. A product may already be selling hundreds of times per month.

Thus, you know you'll be able to sell it.

The worst-case scenario is that other people on the listing may under-cut your price to the point where you have to sell, break even or take a 10% loss. For example, if you invest $2,000 but you only end up bringing back $1,800, you don't lose your shirt over it, so to speak. That's what makes wholesale pretty easy to get into.

Do you have to live in a specific place in the world for this business model to run efficiently?

It doesn't matter where you are in the world. As long as your country allows you to create an Amazon seller central account, the reverse sourcing wholesale business model works. The reason why you can do this from everywhere is that you never have to see or touch a product.

When I open up a wholesale account, 80% of the time the company is able to ship the product directly to Amazon. In the rare instance where they can't do that, you can get it sent to a prep center, and then they will send it to Amazon for you.

This is how to start a private label E-Commerce business.

The private labeling process is simple. Simply put, it involves finding a supplier who is already making a product that you want to sell online. That's the great thing about private labeling… you don't have to invent something new.

All you need to do is buy a product from a manufacturer, put your logo on it, and sell it online. At this point, you own the rights to the product. This means that you can customize, package, and design your product however you would like. All of a sudden, you've got a product that you can sell anywhere around the world and make money from it.

The best way to find high-quality suppliers and manufacturers online is through a website called Alibaba.com. This is one of the leading global B2B trading E-Commerce marketplaces. Their platform connects buyers from over 190+ countries to millions of suppliers in the world.

Inside this blog, I am going to show you how to do product research on Alibaba.com. I will give you an example of a product that you would find on their website. More importantly, I will tell you what to look for, how to reach out to suppliers, and some key questions that you should ask them.

If you don't yet have a product idea, you can browse the various categories on their website to find potential products. This is what will allow you to determine if there is a market for the product that you're interested in selling.

Let's say that you're interested in boxing. All you would do is click on the category and you will see all of the different products that are available in that category, like mouthguards, a boxing robe, or boxing gloves. You can just browse the website and get ideas for potential products that you could sell online.

Alternatively, let's say that you already have a product idea and you want to find a manufacturer. You can simply type in the product name in the Alibaba search bar. An example of a product is an ab roller. If you type that product name into the search bar, you will see a lot of different suppliers who are manufacturing it (4,400 results to be exact).

One thing that I really love about Alibaba is that every supplier on their website has a different design and style of product. You may be wondering, “Why aren't these suppliers selling these products on their own E-Commerce website?”

They aren't interested in that business. Rather, they specialize in manufacturing. They would much rather source their products to different companies or people like you who can sell products, build a brand, and do the marketing. Suppliers only want to focus on business to business.

Hence, you don't have to worry about them ever competing with you. Before you sift through 4,400 products, there are a variety of features that I suggest you take advantage of which you can find by filtering your options.

Alibaba.com Features

1. Verified Supplier

One of the most important filter options is the Verified Supplier feature. This will ensure that you get the highest quality suppliers on Alibaba. A verified supplier is someone who has passed on-site verification by top global third-party inspection companies, such as SGS and Intertek.

Also, they give you access to verified videos which means that you can see a supplier's facilities. When you're sourcing from different countries around the world it's good to make sure that a facility is high-quality.

Lastly, with the Verified Supplier feature, you get access to a supplier's detailed inspection report downloads. This is helpful to get some additional information about the supplier inspection process.

2. Trade Assurance

This is a service that ensures that the payments that you make through Alibaba.com are safe. In the event that you're not happy with the terms that you and your supplier agreed upon in your Trade Assurance order, Alibaba will get your money back for you. In addition, they will offer their assistance in reaching an outcome that best serves you.

3. Supplier Online Performance Index (SOPI)

This is a data-driven index that presents suppliers’ business performance on Alibaba.com. Their performance is graded based on presentation quality, product popularity, transaction volume, and service quality. It's classified into six levels – 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest level.

Questions To Ask Suppliers

Before you decide to work with a supplier, it's critical that you ask a variety of questions to determine their credibility and trustworthiness. Ask the following questions when you reach out to 3-5 potential suppliers whom you are interested in.

  • What is the minimum order quantity?
  • Can you send me a sample to review?
  • What are your product customization options?
  • How much does it cost to ship the product?
  • Are there product customization options?
  • What is the size and weight of the product? 
  • What is your lead time?

*** Keep in mind that, typically lead times are around 25-30 days upon confirmation of a new order. However, suppliers are busier during different times of the year. The busiest times are usually Chinese New Year and Christmas.***

Amazon has become one of the most powerful companies in the world.

The proof is in the numbers. Amazon currently accounts for 38.7% of all U.S. retail eCommerce sales in the U.S. alone. It is forecasted that these sales will rise by 17.2% to $260.86 billion. This is 4 percentage points higher than the expected overall growth rate for US retail eCommerce sales. For many years now we've seen a trend towards the number of people who are shopping online.

COVID merely accelerated this trend. Since Amazon came on the scene, online shopping has never been easier. You can get anything delivered to your home. Unfortunately, this has caused a lot of brick and mortar businesses to close down or declare bankruptcy.

As devastating as this has been for business owners, it has presented a golden opportunity for new Amazon sellers. Amazon gives us the incredible privilege of using its platform to sell to their customers. The more customers that they have, the more that they need third-party sellers, like you!

Whenever I invest in a company, I'm not looking at how it's doing today. Rather, I'm thinking about where the company will be 5-10 years from now. Starting an Amazon business is about investing in your future.

In essence, you're partnering with Amazon. If you have the desire to sell on Amazon in 2021 you need to ask yourself, “Do I believe and trust that more and more people will continue to buy on Amazon in the years to come?” If you don't believe this to be true, you need to re-think your decision to sell on Amazon.

Having an online business isn't like having a 9 to 5 job.

You don't get a certain amount of money back from your efforts right away. There are no short-term rewards. At first, your business will take from you. It will require a lot of your time, energy, and hard work. However, over time, your business will be less dependent on you. Eventually, it will provide you with passive income.

The beautiful thing about selling on Amazon is that there is potential to reach hundreds of thousands of people on their platform. Thus, the ability for your business to grow and scale is unlike any other business that we've seen before. Tatiana has firsthand experience with this.

In two years' time, she was making $40,000 per month on Amazon at 23 years old. Eventually, she grew her Amazon business to the point where she was making $100,000 per month. It's amazing how fast your money can compound when you're willing to put in the hard work and have a long-term mentality.

All it takes is setting up the foundation of your business. Once you have accomplished that, it comes down to successfully marketing your product. Keep in mind that more people are selling on Amazon today than ever before. This means that there is more competition. However, competition isn't a bad thing.

A healthy level of competition shows that there is demand.

The key is finding ways to differentiate your product and your brand from others on Amazon. You have to give people a reason to buy from you instead of all of the other sellers.

Another reason why selling on Amazon in 2021 is an incredible opportunity is because of how affordable it is to start. Knowing that you can invest $5000 into a business that has the potential to earn you millions of dollars is an incredibly low cost. That being said, there is always some risk involved with starting a business.

At the end of the day, the most important thing that is going to determine your success YOU. To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to be constantly learning, evolving, and identifying the best Amazon strategies. The most successful Amazon sellers are the ones who do the work to learn cutting-edge tactics and techniques.

As a result, they have a competitive advantage over everyone else. Oftentimes, all it takes is identifying one strategy that nobody else knows about that allows you to stand out from the competition and get more sales. I want to share with you something that I recently learned from Tony Robbins at his Unleash The Power Within seminar.

He has created a formula called The Success Cycle.

This cycle consists of Potential, Action, Results, and Belief.

People have unlimited potential. They can create incredible things in their lives. When you take action towards something, you start getting results. When you get results, you gain greater confidence and certainty. Thus, when you have more self-belief, you tap into more potential. When you tap into more potential, you take more actions and get more results. In turn, your belief is strengthened.

However, it's important to understand that the cycle starts and ends with Belief. If you don't believe that you can do something, you won't. As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.”

Selling on Amazon in 2022 is a smart decision.

The lives of Tatiana and I changed forever the moment that we decided to become Amazon sellers. From the onset, we believed that it was possible to create a successful business selling on Amazon.

If you believe that Amazon is a great opportunity and that you will make a lot of money doing it, you will take action and succeed. However, if you adopt a mentality of fear and self-doubt, you'll never start.

This isn't how success works.

If this is you, make sure that you focus on your online business equally as much, if not more, than your current job. Yes, your current job provides for you, but your online business is what is going to help you create the financial freedom that you desire.

Over the next decade, the number of people who will have access to the Internet is expected to increase to 7.5 billion people. No matter what online business you decide to pursue, you are guaranteed to benefit from the sheer number of new consumers who will be buying online.

Don't wait to start an online business. Your time is now!

Building an online business isn't for everyone. It's hard work to build something from scratch, especially if you don't have any previous business experience. However, it's a journey that is worth embarking on.

Along your journey, you will be forced to grow and evolve beyond your current state of being, to overcome your limiting beliefs and fears, and start taking massive action.

How much money do you need to start an Amazon FBA business?

A lot of people underestimate the costs that are involved with an Amazon business. Tatiana and I want to break down the process for you so that you know exactly how much money you will need. When starting an Amazon business, there are up-front costs.

The biggest cost will be your inventory, which you will order from a manufacturer, in bulk. The number of units that you order will be determined based on your manufacturer's minimum order quantity. The majority of your money will go towards investing in inventory.

Amazon receives your products at their fulfillment center. Amazon has hundreds of fulfillment centers all around the world. You will need to pay the FBA fee and the referral fee for using their centers. Also, you need to consider what the fees will be for marketing your products.

You can't just launch a product on Amazon and hope that you magically generate sales. That's not how it works. Yes, there are ways that you can start your business with less money. This may involve finding a product that doesn't cost a lot of money to source from, placing a smaller inventory order, and/or saving on your marketing expenses.

However, if your goal is to make a lot of money on Amazon, starting with less money will be an uphill battle. In reality, it's only setting you up for disappointment and struggle.

On top of that, less money means a limited number of products to pursue. This means that you will have to settle for products that may not have the best profit margins or demand. In an already competitive market, this is not the best idea.

This is why we recommend that you start an Amazon business with a couple of thousand dollars.

If you don't have that money, we want to help guide you in a better direction. The goal is to be financially secure enough to start an Amazon business the right way. Before you even consider starting any type of business there is one thing that you need to accept and understand – you're going to fail and make mistakes along the way.

This is why Tatiana and I are big believers in investing in an Amazon training program. Learning from others who have been where you want to go will help prevent you from losing money and making unnecessary mistakes. In turn, you will be able to better leverage the power of Amazon and catapult your success.

Another thing to take into account is that building a business is a long-term investment. You won't see results right away. It's not like a 9 to 5 job where you get paid for the 40 hours of work that you put in. If that's what you were expecting, this may not be the business for you.

You can put 1,000 hours into any online business and still not make any money from your efforts whatsoever. It's not about the amount of time or money that you invest in your business. Rather, it's about what you create and the amount of value that you add.

You need to get real with yourself and determine if you're willing to delay gratification and build an asset that will provide for you, long-term.

Now that I've given you the hard truth, let's explore the other avenues on Amazon that you can take advantage of if you aren't financially secure yet.

Publishing books on Amazon is a cheaper alternative to selling physical products.

This is a great business model for getting your feet wet and learning how Amazon works. If you choose to write your own book, the only cost involved is hiring someone to design a book cover. This is something that can be done fairly inexpensively via the platform, Fiverr.

That being said, I would recommend that you hire a book editor and invest some money into the marketing of your book. If you have a couple of hundred books, hire a ghostwriter to write your book for you. This will save you a lot of time and energy. You can find a lot of experienced freelance writers via the platform Upwork.

Although you won't make a lot of money with this business model, you can still expect to make a couple hundred to a couple of thousand dollars per month from an Amazon Book Publishing business.

A second avenue for making money on Amazon is by being an Amazon affiliate. You can start with very little money. This model gives you the opportunity to promote products on Amazon and earn an affiliate commission from that. However, in order to apply for Amazon's affiliate program, Amazon Associates, you will need to have a website.

There are some expenses involved in creating a website, like purchasing a domain name and setting up hosting.

I'll be honest, it can be challenging to make a lot of money as an Amazon affiliate. If you're interested in doing affiliate marketing, there are a lot of other better opportunities that you can explore. I created an affiliate marketing program called Affiliate Marketing Mastery that shows you how you can turn your passions into profits and create a consistent stream of passive income.

Alternatively, if you have experience in a skill like accounting, blog writing, video editing, or graphic design, you could always become a freelancer online. It's easy to promote your services via Upwork or Fiverr.

Companies will pay you for your services on a per-project or per-hour basis. If you have the desire to eventually build an Amazon FBA business, freelancing is a great way to start saving so that you can eventually invest in a business of your own.

This is how to make money on Amazon. But first, are you financially ready?

If money is tight right now, your #1 priority is figuring out what you can do to get your finances in order. If you can't do that, building an online business may not be for you. Trust me when I say that figuring out how to build a successful business is a lot harder in comparison to finding some extra work.

When you have a good amount of money to invest in an Amazon business, you will go so much further and faster than you ever would if you budget your way through the process.

At the end of the day, it always comes down to how bad you want success. If you are willing to make the necessary sacrifices and work as if your life depends on it, there is no limit to how far you can go and how much money you can make.

Amazon FBA product research is critical to your success.

Unfortunately, a lot of people get overwhelmed with product research. The challenges they encounter can be traced back to their mindset. They have a great product idea (in their eyes) and assume that it will sell well on Amazon. As a result, they invest a lot of time and money into it. When it doesn't sell well, they are left feeling discouraged.

They assume that their failure is merely the result of a saturated market. In a perfect world, you could select and sell a product on Amazon that you love. However, in today's competitive eCommerce world, that mindset will not serve you well. You cannot guess what will work, nor should you sell what YOU want to sell.

Rather, you have to sell what is already selling! This is why it's so important that you do product research. Not only will this help you mitigate your risks, but it will also set you up to win as an Amazon seller.

Amazon Product Research Criteria

Here are eight criteria that I suggest you follow when it comes to choosing a product to sell on Amazon. Think of these criteria as training wheels. Once you gain more experience selling on Amazon, you can make your own decisions and venture away from some of these criteria. Of course, this will depend on your tolerance for risk. Take out your journal and let's dive in!

1. Product That Is High In Demand & Profitable

You need to make sure that the product that you choose is highly profitable. There has to be a demand for whatever it is that you're selling. Competition is your friend. Don't be afraid of it! It shows you what is already working. See what people are already selling and how much money they are making.

As a beginner, don't aim to make a million dollars with your first product. Your first product is all about getting your feet wet and gaining experience so that by the time you create your second and third products, you'll know what works and what doesn't.

2. Product That Can Be Private Labeled

Private labeling means that you put your logo and branding on a product. When you private label something it becomes yours. It allows you to differentiate yourself from the competition. The first step to private labeling a product is finding a supplier who already manufactures the product you're interested in.

On Alibaba.com you will find thousands of suppliers to choose from. Browse the website, reach out to a handful of suppliers, and get samples delivered to you. Ask them what it will cost to manufacture your product. This will help you determine what your profit margins will be.

3. Product That Sells For More Than $15 on Amazon

When you do your research you first want to determine which country you want to sell in. The U.S., the UK, and Germany are the three biggest Amazon marketplaces that I recommend. You want to be sure that the product you choose to private label can sell for more than $15 on Amazon.

As long as there are a few competitors who are selling for $15 or more, that's a good sign. If your product sells for less than $10, customers won't be able to buy that product by itself. Rather, they will have to buy something else in order to purchase your product. On top of that, your profit margins will be too low with a $10 product.

4. Product That Is Lightweight and Small

The bigger a product is, the more expensive it will be to ship. There are shipping costs involved in selling physical products, so you want to keep your costs low. Depending on what your budget is, keep your product light and small. Again, this isn't a hard and fast rule.

If you find a product that is a bit heavier but has high demand, that's okay. Just know that you will be spending more money. As long as the math makes sense and you still get a good profit margin from it (at least 25% or more) it's worthwhile!

5. Product That Solves A Problem

When you create a product that solves a problem for people you open up the door to building a brand. If your first product ends up being a success, you want to think about how you can create a second and third product that will complement one another. This is how to build a collection of products that cross-promote each other.

Let's take the Bioptimizer P3-OM Probiotics as an example. My good friend, Wade Lightheart, sells his supplement line in the health market, under the niche of digestion. He sells many different products that solve problems related to digestion, with the goal of optimizing your digestive health. Also, he has created courses and a variety of other resources to support people on their health journey.

6. Product That Can Be Marketed Outside of Amazon

If you can find a product that can be marketed outside of Amazon, that's a huge bonus. This is where the power of influencers come into play. My friend James Swanwick promotes his Swannies blue-blocking sunglasses by sending them to models who have large Instagram followings.

He gives them the product for free or pays them to promote his product on their Instagram pages. In turn, he gets more sales on Amazon than his competitors do. Similarly, you could send your product to bloggers and ask them to write about it.

7. Product and Niche That You're Passionate About

When I first started selling physical products on Amazon I was training for a fitness competition. At the time, I was taking a lot of fat loss supplements. In particular, L-Carnitine, Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), and Branched-Chain Amino Acid (BCAAs). I felt confident about selling these products because I had a passion for fitness. On top of that, I experienced the benefits of using these supplements.

Keep in mind that you don't have to be passionate about your product. If you're just want to sell a product on Amazon to make money, that's okay. However, passion will motivate you to build your business on a bigger scale. It will inspire you to do whatever it takes to ensure that your product becomes a best seller on Amazon. Passion goes a long way in business.

8. Product That Is Durable

I would avoid any glass-related products that could break during shipping, as well as electronics. You don't want to deal with the headaches that come with customers receiving broken products. When this happens, you may get a bad review on Amazon. Even worse, you will have to refund the product and send a customer(s) a new one. When you're a beginner, you don't want to deal with issues like this. I would avoid them at all costs.

Your homework (if you choose to take action on it) is to spend a couple of hours browsing products in different categories on Amazon. Take notes on the products that stand out to you, and do deeper research on them. Make it a goal to narrow down your options to your top three products. Of those three products, identify which one you want to pursue.
