Is there a difference between laziness and procrastination?

The answer is yes! Procrastination is the habit of delaying an important task, whereas laziness is the unwillingness to act. However, there is one commonality amongst these two behaviors – a failure to take action. You know you should do something, but you're simply not doing it.

The knowing piece is what creates internal suffering for a lot of people. In his book, The Procrastination Equation: How to Stop Putting Things Off and Start Getting Stuff Done, Dr. Piers Steel says that self-awareness is a key part of why procrastinating makes us feel so awful.

When we procrastinate, not only are we aware that we are avoiding a task, but we also know that it will result in negative consequences. Nevertheless, we do it anyway.

We all procrastinate from time to time. However, when it becomes a chronic habit you have to put yourself in check. Tatiana and I want to share our best tips for how you can overcome laziness and procrastination and start getting more done. Let's dive in!

1. Link Pain To Not Taking Action

The reason why a lot of people procrastinate is that they link pain to a task. For example, let's say that you know that you should work on your online business. However, because you're so overwhelmed with where to start, you end up avoiding the task altogether.

To avoid the pain of overwhelm, you decide to scroll on social media or binge Netflix shows for hours on end. You're merely attempting to distract your mind. Essentially, you're doing anything to avoid the pain of the task that you know you need to focus on.

A great way to overcome laziness and procrastination is to link pain to not taking action. What is the negative consequence of not working on your online business? Most likely, you'll experience the pain of disappointment. You'll be letting yourself down, which will reduce your self-confidence.

Maybe the pain means that you will continue to be held back financially. You will have to continue working a 9 to 5 job that you hate. Your desire to create financial freedom will remain a dream and nothing more.

Figure out what it is that you are not taking action on and ask yourself – what are the consequences of doing nothing? The truth will set you free. The more pain that you can link to not taking action, the greater the likelihood that you will overcome procrastination.

Use your pain as motivation. Pain is a great short-term motivator. However, the best long-term motivator is pleasure. You also want to link pleasure to doing what you're procrastinating on.

What is the pleasure that you will receive from taking action?

Let's go back to the example of building an online business. The pleasures you receive may be in the form of finally quitting your 9 to 5 job and creating passive income.

Maybe it will mean that you have the freedom of time to travel, take up new hobbies, or spend more time with your loved ones. Once you've mastered the pain/pleasure principle, it's all about building momentum as you continue to take massive action.

2. Have a Vision For Your Life

Creating a vision for your life is a powerful way to overcome laziness and procrastination. A vision gives your life a sense of purpose and direction. Once you have a vision, you have a compass. You know where you want to go and you are inspired to take action to get there.

The reason why a lot of people procrastinate is that they don't have a strong ‘WHY' or a clear focus on what they are trying to achieve. When you have a vision for your life you are motivated to make that vision a reality. There are two types of motivation – push and pull.

Push motivation takes a lot of effort. It is only sustainable for a short period of time. Eventually, you run out of energy. Conversely, pull motivation is when you're pulled towards something. It doesn't require as much effort on your part because you want to do it.

When you're procrastinating, you're thinking small. It's important to think broader, which is where a vision comes into play. We encourage you to dream big! Make your vision so compelling and exciting that it makes you jump out of bed every day.

3. Set SMART Goals

Once you know what your vision is, you can then set goals. The reason why a lot of people fail to achieve their goals is that they set goals that are too difficult to achieve.

This is why you want to make sure that your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Doing so will ensure that you set yourself up for success.

Once you have set your goals, you want to work towards them. This will require that you break down your goals even further. We recommend creating a schedule that you adhere to on a daily basis. Jorden Peterson has a great video that we recommend you watch called Make a Damn Schedule.

He says that the important thing about a schedule is that you don't make it feel like you're in prison. The reason why a lot of people don't like setting schedules is that they don't want to put themselves into a box. You want to set up your day in a favorable way for YOU.

Review your goals and create a day that you'll enjoy and be proud of.

When you're scheduling your day, negotiate with yourself. Don't be a tyrant. There will be tasks that you have to do that you may not want to do. Get creative and figure out how you can link more pleasure to the experience of doing something monotonous. Trick your brain into enjoying the process!

Are you ready to take action to overcome laziness and procrastination?

These tips have helped me and Tatiana increase our productivity and reduce our laziness and procrastination. We hope that you will feel empowered to take action and implement these habits into your daily life.

Curious about how to change your life? Here's how…

The longer that you procrastinate on something, the more stuck you will feel, and the less likely that you will take action. We've all procrastinated at some point in our lives. Sometimes you just want to be lazy and do nothing. That is OK. Relaxation is a great reward for hard work.

However, when procrastination becomes a bad habit it can negatively affect every area of your life. Research shows that one in five people are chronic procrastinators. Not surprisingly, these types of people dabble and aren't able to finish anything. As a result, they end up struggling in life.

If you feel like you're falling into a procrastination trap where you're continuously putting things off, now is the time to make a change. I'm going to help you break free from the never-ending cycle of delay, which only causes unnecessary stress and pain. However, before I do it's important that you understand something.

If you want to create change in your life, you have to be willing to change.

Nothing in your life will change unless you change. Let me use the example of starting an online business to prove my point. Right now there are a lot of opportunities to work from home, whether you want to start a side hustle or create financial freedom. A lot of people have the desire to start an online business but they never take action on it. Why? The answer lies in what drives human behavior.

Human beings are driven by the need to avoid pain and the desire to gain pleasure. This is otherwise referred to as procrastination. The decisions you make, the actions you take, and the habits you indulge in, are all based on this pain-pleasure principle.

Going back to my example… an online business can give you a lot of pleasure down the road, in the form of working from home, being your own boss and living the laptop lifestyle. However, you may be held back from building an online business because you associate more pain than pleasure to it.

The pain that a lot of people associate with starting an online business is that the process is hard, timely, and risky. I'm not going to sugarcoat it…. success isn't a walk in the park. There is no short-term benefit of working hard. Building a business is a long-term game. If you're not willing to do whatever it takes to achieve success, you won't get far. Yes, it's a lot more comfortable to watch Netflix versus working on building your business.

It comes down to you deciding how bad you want something.

However, it's also very important that you reinforce the pleasure principle. When you think about starting an online business or whatever it is that you've been putting off, ask yourself, “What is the benefit that it will give me if I decide to pursue it?” Write these benefits down on a piece of paper. Maybe it's your desire to travel the world, spend more time with your family, create financial freedom, or become a philanthropist.

When you feel pleasure towards something, but you know that there will still be some level of pain that you have to endure, naturally you will experience an inner conflict. This is what causes people to get stuck in analysis paralysis, which is nothing short of a productivity killer.

The real question is, “How do you trick your brain into taking action, no matter how much pain you associate with doing so?” First, you need to use your pain as motivation, meaning that you have to start linking more pain to NOT taking action than to taking action.

Jim Rohn once said, “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is that discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” Yes, there is pain involved in being disciplined.

However, trust me when I say that having regrets is much more painful. Knowing that you settled for a life of mediocrity and didn't maximize your true potential will eat away at you. It is possible for short-term pain to result in long-term pleasure. However, you have to willing to embrace the pain.

What is the consequence of not doing the thing that you've been putting off?

Make a list and write those pain points down. Going back to my online business example, maybe it's having a 9 to 5 job that doesn't pay you a lot of money, working for someone else, or living in scarcity. This is why I chose to be an entrepreneur.

When I was younger my parents went through a really bad bankruptcy. As a result, I grew up with a scarcity mentality because we didn't have a lot of money. In my mind, I linked not having money with pain. The feeling of being broke terrifies me. This is why I made a commitment to myself from an early age that I was never going to bring a child into this world until I was financially free. I used my pain as motivation to become successful.

What are the benefits associated with taking action? How would your life transform if you chose courage over comfort? What amazing life experiences would you have? Imagine a version of you who is a strong and confident leader.

Be someone who has the resourcefulness and creativity to take massive action and turn a dream into a reality. I dare you to stop putting off the things that you want to do and start playing big. If you are someone who aspires to build an online business but doesn't know where to start, check out my FREE business course where I share the 7 business models that made me an Internet millionaire in less than 3 years.

It's time to do the things you keep putting off.

In closing, I encourage you to journal and write down all of the reasons why you aren't taking action. Reflect upon the pleasure you will get from taking action and the pain you will experience from not taking action.

There is no perfect time to do anything. Sometimes you've just got to dive in and try. In the words of my mentor, Tony Robbins, “The path to success is to take massive, determined action.” Be one of the few who take action versus the many who dabble. Trust me when I say that the payoff is worth it.

The goal is to make every day a productive day.

No matter what work you do, it will never feel like there are enough hours in the day. That's just a fact. Where a lot of people get stuck is that they assume that being productive means crushing everything on their to-do list. They think that getting more things done is the most efficient way of working. This is far from true.

Being busy has become a status symbol. In today's 24/7 world, the standard response to “how are you” is “busy!” People think that if you are super busy, then that must mean that you are successful, right? Not really.

Being crazy busy is actually a deterrent to your productivity. When you are engaged in an act of endless “doing”  things, you don't end up getting anywhere. This can make you feel unorganized and overwhelmed. In the words of Socrates, “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.”

It's fair to say that being super busy doesn't mean that you are super productive.

The best way to become more effective at work is to focus on what really matters to you. Have you ever really wanted to get something done, but for some reason, you find any reason to avoid it at all costs? I think this is something that we have all experienced at some point in our lives.

In his book, The War of Art: Breakthrough The Blocks And Win Your Inner Creative Battles, Steven Pressfield says that there is a malignant presence that exists to block you from doing what you most need to do. He calls this force, “resistance.”

This happens because the work that you need to do is so important to your soul's calling that you are afraid to actually do it. In this headspace, you are naturally more inclined to fall into procrastination mode. However, this doesn't mean that you are lazy or unmotivated.

Research shows that the problem is that our brains are programmed to procrastinate. We all tend to struggle with tasks that promise future upside in return for efforts we take now. In short, it's easier for your brain to process concrete versus abstract things. This is in no way meant to be an excuse for why you can't get things done. Being productive is a choice, just like procrastination is.

In order to prevent procrastination from taking over your life, you need to learn how to work smarter, not harder. How do you do this? By cultivating a set of daily habits that will help boost your productivity levels.

If you want to learn how to be more productive with your time, follow these 6 daily habits.

1. Set Daily Goals

I believe that goal setting is one of the most important aspects of having a productive day. Goals give us a sense of direction. They provide a roadmap so that we know where we are going. If you don't know where you are headed, how do you expect to ever get there?

Long-term goals are great, but it's easy to lose sight of them because they are so far away. This is why it's important that you set tangible, daily goals. Doing so allows you to analyze your progress on a daily basis.

In order to set daily goals, you first need to know what you are striving for in the long-term. For example, if your long-term goal is to lose 10 pounds in 30 days, what could you do today in order to get one step closer to accomplishing this goal?

You want to plan out how you expect to achieve your daily goal-setting activity. Write it out and prioritize your tasks so that you are prepared. The morning is the best time to set daily goals, as this is the time when your mind is most clear.

2. Set Short-Term Deadlines

Nothing drives productivity more than a solid deadline. However, deadlines can be stressful, especially if you put them off until right before they are due.

People get into trouble when they don't attach a sense of urgency to whatever task they are engaging in. Having all the time in the world to finish something is an open invitation to procrastinate.

It's easy to let yourself off the hook. However, nobody likes to let someone down, especially if it's their boss or a business coach. This is when having an accountability buddy works wonders. It will ensure that you stay committed to the task at hand.

Setting short-term deadlines force you to work more effectively and create a sense of urgency, which provides you with the energy that you need in order to achieve the results that you desire.

3. Complete The Most Important Task First

You only have so much time in one day. If you think that you will be able to accomplish every single thing on your massive to-do list, you are setting yourself up for failure. This is why I'm a big believer in focusing my time on the most important task first.

Not everything on your list is a top priority. What is the most critical thing that you need to accomplish? Consider this to be your top procrastination task. As I expressed above, this won't be easy because your brain is conditioned to look for the path of least resistance.

However, by getting your MIT (most important task) out of the way first thing in the morning, you are setting yourself up for a productive day. Mark Twain once said, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Figure out what your “frog” is.

Realistically, it is the one task that has the most meaning to your work and life. Make a commitment to yourself that you will invest time into it. If you need to rid yourself of distractions, turn off your phone or mark your calendar as busy for one hour so that people know not to bother you during that time.

4. Create A Mindfulness Practice

When it comes to getting things done, one of the biggest challenges that people face is being able to focus on the task at hand. The mind is constantly wandering, which means that it's easy to get distracted. Procrastination feeds off of this state.

In order to be productive, people assume that they have to be constantly achieving and doing. The focus is always on the next thing that they need to do, or the next place that they need to be. As a result, they are never fully in the present moment.

In the words of Robin Sharma, “Productivity is less about what you do with your time and more about how you run your mind.” A great way to bring yourself back to the present moment on a daily basis is to create a mindfulness practice, like deep breathing, meditation or yoga.

By focusing your awareness on the here and now, you are more conscious of what you are doing. By becoming a more active observer of your thoughts, you will be more aware when your mind starts to wander.

5. Set A Timer

How often have you started working on a task and then your mind drifted off, causing you to check Instagram, look at your email inbox, and then work on an entirely different task altogether? Join the club. We've all been there. This is why setting a timer is a great way to keep you on track and 100% committed to whatever you need to do.

When you set a timer for a task and dig into it with full commitment, you get a chance to see how much you can really get done in a specific block of time.

When I do my work, I like to use the Pomodoro Technique. This is a time management method that uses a timer to break down work into intervals — specifically 25-minutes in length, separated by 5-minute breaks. This process is repeated 3 times. After you've done 4 Pomodoro sessions you can take a longer break if needed, or continue the cycle.

During a 25-minute time period, I work as intensely as I can. Doing so allows me to enter into a flow state, otherwise known as your optimal zone of productivity. I have found this easy method to be one of the most effective ways to rid myself of procrastination.

When you see how much you can accomplish in a specific block of time, it will motivate you to achieve more, thereby increasing your productivity levels.

6. Start and End Your Day With A Routine

A routine is an amazing way to stay on track and boost your productivity. When it comes to having a super productive morning, the key is to find what works best for you and then commit to doing it on a consistent basis.

For example, maybe that means hitting the gym, reading, eating a healthy breakfast or planning out your day. Whatever allows you to hyperfocus and be at the top of your game is ideal.

Forming new healthy habits takes time. This is why it's a great idea to have some kind of accountability reminder in place as you build a habit. I'm a big fan of the Productivity Planner. This is a journal that is designed to help you get your most important tasks completed so that you can feel more productive on a daily basis.

I also write in this journal at the end of the day. I rate my productivity score, on a scale of 1-10, and see what I could have done better. I go through this process every single morning, as part of my morning ritual. Doing so ensures that I always stay on track with my goals.

Keep in mind that what you do before bed matters just as much as what you do in the morning. In terms of an evening routine, I encourage you to plan the next day. Take a look at your calendar and write down the most important things that you need to get done.

Make sure that you actually schedule these tasks into your calendar. If your schedule changes slightly, that is OK. All that matters is that you've created a basic framework for what your day will look like. This will ensure that you wake up feeling grounded and ready to crush the day.

This is how to be more productive at work.

The people that get a lot accomplished every single day aren’t special. Rather, they have just mastered these habits that I've shared with you. This is what has worked for me and many others. By committing to follow these habits, you will prime yourself to be more productive in every area of your life. Keep in mind that becoming a productivity master takes time. However, you will get there if you stay focused.

Paul J. Meyer said it best, “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” Are you ready to work smarter, not harder?

I've got 3 easy ways to overcome procrastination that will drastically improve your overall quality of life. We all procrastinate from time to time. Our minds always seems to create a reason why today isn't the right day to do something – too busy, too stressed, too old, too tired.

Procrastination is more than just putting something off until tomorrow. Experts define it as, “The voluntary delay of some important task that we intend to do, despite knowing that we will suffer as a result.”

Procrastination is a bad habit, which, over time, can negatively effect your life, resulting in increased levels of stress, reduced performance, and productivity. The good news is that, like any habit, it can be changed, and it all starts with your mindset.

The question remains, “Why do we procrastinate, and how can we overcome it?” What follows are some powerful strategies to overcome procrastination. Are you ready to solve the procrastination puzzle and start accomplishing more?

We all have something in our lives that we know that we should do or need to be, but don't do. It could be anything from going to the gym, to working on your online business, to making a call that you have been putting off.

Procrastination is an insidious and unwelcome enemy that creeps up on you without a moments notice, leaving you feeling defeated, disoriented, and distressed. Next thing you know, it's the end of the day and nothing has been finished. Can you relate? Here is the burning question….

How do we overcome procrastination?

You may not want to hear this, but the solution for how to overcome procrastination starts and ends with you. In the words of Hunter Thompson, “A man who procrastinates in his choosing, will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.” There are a lot of different strategies for how to break the procrastination cycle, but I would like to focus on 3 easy ways to overcome procrastination:

1. Lower Your Pain Or Increase Your Desire

I believe that there is one over-arching reason why we procrastinate, and that is because we tend to associate more pain with doing what needs to be done, than not doing what needs to be done.

If you think something is going to be tough and dread doing it before you even start, you are setting yourself up to procrastinate. At the end of the day, it all comes down to perception, or the meaning that you ascribe to a task or activity.

Whatever it is that you perceive as painful, you can either lower that pain and change your perception, or you can increase your desire. Keep in mind that, in order for this to happen, your desire has to be greater than the pain you are experiencing.

The best way to build your desire is by having reasons, otherwise known as your purpose for doing something. You can elicit these desires by asking yourself questions like, “If I don't do this, what is going to be the cost?” If you can link more pain to not doing something, than you will be motivated to take action.

2. Chunk Down Your Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Procrastination has long been considered to be a willpower issue, but if we look at the science of procrastination, psychologists have discovered that it may have more to do with how our brains operate.

According to Caroline Webb in the Harvard Business Review, our brains are programmed to put off tasks. In her work, she cites research from UCLA that proves that the allure of near-term gain almost always outweighs the attraction of future reward.

If you want to overcome procrastination, you need to learn how to hack your brain. Literally. A great way to do this is by chunking down your tasks into smaller steps. For example, if you have a desire to do 30 minutes of cardio, but you keep procrastinating with doing it, try breaking it down and engage in an action that feels less overwhelming. Maybe that means going for a walk, or even easier, just going outside and breathing in some fresh air.

Taking that first step will give you the momentum that you need to keep going. The fact is, once you are in motion, you stay in motion. This is what allows you to transform your emotional state and put yourself into a zone of optimal productivity.

Eventually, the act of going outside, turns into a walk, and before you know it, you are running like the wind! Set yourself up to win, and when you accomplish something, make sure that you reward yourself, because whatever gets rewarded, gets repeated.

3. Implement The 5 Second Rule

According to Mel Robbins, author of the book, The Five Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage, the real problem is that we don't understand what procrastination is. Our minds associate it with failure and laziness, which then feeds our negative thoughts even more. As a result, our inner critic spirals out of control and we are left going from, “I don't want to do it” to “I just can't do it!”

We know that we should do something, but our hesitation prevents us from taking any action at all. As long as you hesitate, your brain will associate pain with the very thing that you are trying to accomplish. Before you know it, you are in overwhelm. It's a lose-lose battle.

The best way to implement The 5 Second Rule into your daily life is by giving yourself 5 seconds to take an immediate action, no matter if it's big or small. This is called, “hijacking your brain.” Do a countdown and then, as the Nike slogan goes, “Just do it!” Don't give your brain any time to process what is about to happen. A good example of this is skydiving or bungee jumping. The longer you wait to take that leap, so to speak, the more likely that you will hesitate to do it altogether.

These are 3 easy ways to overcome procrastination. I encourage you to take action and integrate one of these solutions into your daily life, so that you can break the procrastination cycle and overcome procrastination for good. In closing, I want to make note of something that has allowed me to overcome procrastination and change every area of my life, and that is called, a morning ritual. By committing to a morning ritual, you are putting yourself first, ensuring that you are operating at your very best, every day.

Oftentimes, the actions that we take at a given time are based on the emotional state that we are in. If you don't have a morning ritual that gets you supercharged for the day ahead, it can be easy to fall into a procrastination trap. This is why I have created an eBook that I want to give to you, for free, called, 21 Morning Ritual Cheatsheet. I hope this knowledge inspires you to create a ritual that has you waking up feeling energized, focused, and ready to crush your day!

Best-selling author Margie Warrell said it best, “Life rewards action. Nothing great is accomplished without it.” How would your life change if you were able to stop dabbling and get more accomplished? Let the answer be your driving force.

I want to share with you why you will fail (and what to do about it). Have you ever wondered why you aren't achieving your goals? It all comes down to your mindset.

In my opinion, there has been too much focus on teaching people how to set goals, and less attention on how to actually achieve them. Don't get me wrong. Setting goals is important, but a goal means nothing unless you actualize it.

When it comes to achieving their goals, unfortunately a lot of people end up hitting a roadblock, and their motivation comes to a standstill. This is referred to as a plateau.

At this point, it’s common for people to give up. This is why you will fail (and what to do about it). Are you ready to learn how you can commit to mastery and achieve the goals that you desire?

Oftentimes, when people encounter a plateau, they start to dabble, which starts a negative cycle of procrastination, discouragement, excuses, and laziness. This is why you will fail.

Eventually, this process is repeated and the cycle continues. I call this process the pyramid of pain, because that’s exactly what it creates. People stop believing in themselves because of the pain associated with their failures.

There is only one reason why you haven’t achieved your goals in life. You stopped – believing, trying, growing, learning, and taking action.

The difference between someone that is successful versus everyone else is that when things get tough, they don't stop. What do you do when you hit a plateau?

Everyone hits plateaus on the road to achieving their goals. It’s called life. However, the good news is that there are things that you can do in order to get past them quickly. Commitment is essential for achieving any goal in life, and the only way to achieve your goals is to commit to mastery.

Rather than seeing their goals through, a dabbler jumps from one thing to next, because they struggle with the shiny object syndrome. As a result, they never master anything in life. This is why you will fail! But committing to mastery is what you can do about it.

You don’t master something by reinventing the wheel. Rather, you learn and model the behavior of someone else who has achieved the same result that you are after. This is the best way to accelerate the process of achieving your goals.

The dabbler tends to give up when things get tough, because they don’t have access to resources that will allow them to break through the plateaus that are holding them back.

Alternatively, the master looks for a mentor or coach who can help them anticipate the plateaus that are going to occur so that they can take the necessary steps in order to avoid them.

Sure, you will still hit plateaus, but when you do, it won’t set you back to the beginning, because you will have someone there, helping to put you back on track.

Don’t be a dabbler. Commit to mastery. Be resourceful, learn from the best, and do something every day that moves you closer to what you want to achieve in life. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back.

In the words of Napoleon Bonaparte, “Victory belongs to the most persevering.” Once you start moving towards your goal, don’t stop. It could mean the difference between success or failure.
