Everything in life feels difficult when you don't have a sufficient amount of willpower & discipline.

In my opinion, these two skills create the foundation for success in life. They help you make better decisions and inevitably, change your life for the better.

If willpower & discipline are so helpful, then why is it that so many people struggle to implement these skills into their daily lives? Great question.

Inside this blog, I'm going to talk about why these skills feel hard and share my secret to building lasting willpower & discipline.

Success doesn't come to those who sit on the sidelines. If you're ready to get in the game of life, keep reading…

Willpower is like a muscle.

Just like you go to the gym and train to get more muscle, you need to do the same with willpower & discipline. If you want to build mental strength, you've got to make it a habit of flexing these skills on a daily basis.

A lot of people assume that the development of willpower & discipline requires a lot of strain. Hence, they stay away from it. Anything that feels difficult usually creates unnecessary pain and suffering, right? Well, not exactly. The very thing that you don't want to do is the very thing that you MUST do.

However, improving yourself doesn't have to be a chore. It's all a matter of perspective. Research shows that you want to train your willpower regularly, but still, allow yourself to be relaxed from time-to-time. This is what will give your willpower muscle a chance to restore its energy levels.

At its core, willpower & discipline are all about self-control. The opposite of self-control is laziness. Have you ever met a successful person who is lazy? Highly unlikely. People with high levels of self-control are consistent in their thoughts, behaviors, and actions. They don't dabble. When something gets difficult, instead of throwing in the towel and giving up, they persevere. As a result, they are more likely to achieve the goals that they set for themselves.

So, the question is, “What is the secret to building willpower & discipline?” Every single day you've got to commit to doing something that is uncomfortable. This idea was first put forth by author and researcher, Angela Duckworth. In her book, Grit she talks about the “Hard Thing” rule which she practices with her family. It is designed solely to help her family develop grit (perseverance + passion).

Mastery requires deliberate practice.

Duckworth says that whatever you choose to do, “it has to be something that requires practice, something where you're going to get feedback telling you how you can get better, and you're going to get right back in there and try again and again.”

If you want to succeed in life, you have to be willing to do hard things. What are you doing in your life right now that is really hard? Something that you don't feel like doing, but you do it anyway. You don't grow by doing things that are comfortable. You have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and stretch yourself.

The more that you push yourself to do things that suck, the stronger you will become. Keep in mind that stepping outside of your comfort zone on a daily basis doesn't have to be an overwhelming activity. The best approach is to slowly build up your resilience for uncomfortable experiences.

An example of an uncomfortable experience is taking a cold shower every morning.

This is the go-to hard thing that I do every day as part of my morning ritual. At the end of my hot shower, I let the water run cold for 30 seconds. This simple act doesn't feel good when I'm doing it, but over time, this willpower transfers to other aspects of my life. Other examples of things that you may not feel like doing, but that will help you build willpower & discipline include:

 • Meditating
 • Waking up @ 5 am
 • Exercising for 30 minutes every day
 • Replacing coffee with tea

Your willpower gets stronger the more that you flex it. Start small. As your self-control grows, you can integrate more hard things into your daily life. Over time, you will feel more focused, confident, and in control of your life. In this state of mind, results come naturally because you've conditioned yourself for success.

THIS is how you build willpower & discipline.

What can you do today that is going to suck, but that will challenge you to grow and become more? If you can commit to this ONE thing, I promise that your life will get better.

When you change your habits, you change your life.

Before you can break destructive habits you first have to commit to change. It takes a lot of willpower and determination to stop engaging in learned behaviors. Sometimes you have to hit your emotional threshold before you're ready to change.

This is the moment at which settling no longer becomes an option. The pain of staying in the same place becomes so much to bear that you become empowered to take action. Self-awareness is the first step to changing anything in your life.

A lot of people suffer from blind spots. They aren't even aware that they are engaging in disempowering habits. In effect, they rationalize and justify their behaviors because the truth is too painful. If you want to change your life, you must be willing to get to the truth.

Who am I today is very different from my younger self. I was in a very dark place when I was a teenager. My bad habits were limiting my potential and preventing me from being the person I knew I could be. Eventually, I got to a point where I was tired of being stuck and feeling depressed. I mustered the courage to look in the mirror and be honest with myself.

The truth set me free. Now is the time to get real with yourself…. what kind of life do you want to have? Is the way you're living now leading you in the direction of your dreams? If not, it's time to change your habits because you deserve to have an abundant and prosperous life.

However, if you do not engage in daily habits that foster that state of being, you will continue to stay stuck. I think you will agree with me that being stuck gets you nowhere in life. Because habits are processed in the brain thousands of times faster than intentional behavior, the only reliable way to change a bad habit is to replace it with a good one. The mere act of engaging in a healthy habit is more important than the habit itself.

The key to forming new habits is repetition.

I'm not going to lie… integrating new habits into your daily life is really hard at first. However, when you start doing something consistently, over time it becomes automatic. A lot of people make the mistake of diving headfirst into a new habit and then wonder they it's so hard to stick with it.

You need to start by making small incremental changes. This is how you will increase your willpower and ensure that your habit sticks. One of the most effective ways to develop new habits is to commit to a 30-day challenge. I've done challenges related to my exercise routine, waking up early, planning my days, and building my business. Pretty much every aspect of my life.

If you can commit to practicing one new habit over 30 days, it will give you the momentum that you need to start making long-lasting changes in your life. Lastly, I encourage you to find people who have overcome the same thing that you are struggling with. Have them be your role model. If they were able to change their bad habits, so can you.

This is how to start new habits that can change your life.

You can change any aspect of your life. If you tried in the past to overcome bad habits with no luck, the beauty of life is that you always get a second chance to try again.

You know deep down inside what is good for you, but nothing will change unless you do. Whenever you engage in habits of success that empower your mind, body, and spirit, you will be inspired to keep doing them.

What new habit will you commit to adopting into your daily life?

The post How To Get More Done: 3 Tips To Instantly Increase Your Motivation appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

]]>

Have you been looking for 3 tips to instantly increase your motivation? Look no further. Everything that you do in life requires motivation. It is the driving force that inspires you to take action to achieve your goals.

We all have experienced a point at which our motivation takes a downward turn. In his book, The Dip, Seth Godin points out that every new project starts out with endless amounts of drive, motivation and excitement. But then, deeper in to the commitment, it gets harder and less fun, until it finally hits a low point where it's not much fun at all. Can you relate?

At the end of the day, motivation starts and ends with you. You can either wake up early, feeling inspired to crush your day, or sit around the house and be lazy. The choice is yours.

Zig Ziglar said it best, “People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing – that's why we recommend it daily.” Are you ready to re-ignite your inner fire and learn 3 tips to increase your motivation?

Are you ready to learn how you can master ever area of your life? CLICK HERE to join my Life Mastery Accelerator program!

Motivation is just like a muscle. If you want to master it, you need to commit to strengthening it every day. Here are 3 tips to instantly increase your motivation:

1. Set Clear Goals

Oftentimes, lack of motivation occurs because we don't have a clear idea of the what the end result looks like. How do you expect to be motivated if you don't know what it is that you are moving towards?

Take it from the father of modern Goal Setting Theory, Edwin Locke, who said, “The more specific or explicit the goal, the more precisely performance is regulated.”

When you set goals that are clear and specific, it focuses your attention on what matters most, and gives you the motivation that you need in order to keep going when things get tough.

2. Find Your Why

If you are struggling with motivation, it is because you don't have a strong ‘why'. The people who fail to achieve their goals in life are the ones that haven't taken the time to address what it is that makes them come alive inside.

In Dan Pink's book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, he says that, “We are motivated when…we feel like there's purpose to what we are doing, where our efforts contribute to the greater good.”

In order to better identify your why, ask yourself the following questions:

 1. What makes you come alive inside?
 2. What are your innate strengths?
 3. Where do you add the greatest value?
 4. How will you measure your life?

The next time that you find yourself hitting a roadblock, step back and reassess your ‘why.' Your answer will give you the fuel that you need to keep moving forward.

3. Prioritize Your Health

I believe that how you take care of your health determines your level of success in life. When self-care isn't one of your top priorities, everything suffers, causing you to be more easily distracted and less motivated to achieve your goals.

Have you ever tried to accomplish something when you haven't slept or have been sick? It's a recipe for disaster.

Try creating a morning routine, and make it a habit to wake up every day and engage in activities that increase your motivation, whether that's lifting weights, going for a walk, listening to an inspirational video, or reciting positive affirmations.

Research at the University of Nottingham and National Institute of Education conducted an 83-study meta-analysis and discovered that self-control is strongest at the beginning of the day. This spike in willpower can helps us feel energized and unstoppable for the day ahead. The reality is, that if you want to improve and sustain your motivation, you need to make your physical health a priority.

These are my 3 tips to instantly increase your motivation. When you master your motivation, it unlocks the door to limitless possibilities. In the words of Remez Sasson, “Motivation is the electrical power that activates the engine of success.”

What is your motivation for success in life? Whatever it is, wake up every day and tell yourself, “I got this.” It doesn't matter how slow you go, just don't stop.

Here is the best entrepreneur advice for beginners.

At the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey it can feel like a roller coaster ride, filled with highs and lows. If you want to succeed in the startup world, you need to learn how to navigate this bumpy terrain so that you come out on top.

The reality is that 8 out of 10 businesses fail in the first year. How would it feel if you could avoid the mistakes that 80% of people make? If more entrepreneurs were armed with the right advice, I think that these numbers would be lower.

Starting a business requires a myriad of personality traits; like hard work, grit, patience, sacrifice, energy, and a passion to succeed. Only the strong survive. Are you one of them?

In this book, The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster: Why Now Is the Time to #JoinTheRide, Darren Hardy says that people who make the jump into entrepreneurship just aren't ready, prepared, or equipped.

I want to share with you the best entrepreneur advice for beginners, comprised of skills that every entrepreneur must master:

1. Believe in Yourself

Making the choice to become an entrepreneur takes courage, especially when family or friends don’t support your vision, which is why you need to believe in yourself.

The most successful people in this world didn’t get to where they are today by doubting themselves. Talk to yourself as if you are a winner.

If you don’t believe in yourself, who will believe in you? This is your life, your choices, and your destiny. Make it count. As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

2. Master Your Emotions

If you want to succeed at anything in life, it starts with going inward and learning how to master your emotions. Successful entrepreneurs don’t let their emotions drive their decisions. Rather, they remain calm and calculated under pressure.

A business that is based on reactive decisions will only result in failure. Yes, you will get triggered, but it is up to you to learn how to calm your ‘emotional storm’ so that you can master any challenge that stands in your way of success.

3. Enjoy The Process Of Success

If you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to learn how to enjoy the process of success. If you only focus on external rewards from your efforts, you will always be in the rat race. Don’t be a slave to your external environment.

Even when you start making a certain amount of money and become financially free, it won’t be enough. You will always be looking for the next best thing.

The chase will never make you happy, which is why you need to become less attached to the final outcome and enjoy the process of success. That is where the real growth lies.

4. Focus on Contribution

Take a moment and think about how lucky you are to be able to do what you love. Having an appreciation for your accomplishments carries more meaning when you are able to give back and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

At the end of the day, contribution is the ultimate reward in life. I believe that we are all here to give and contribute something, beyond ourselves. Not only does it give you a sense of lasting fulfillment, but it also serves to accelerate your success at a much faster pace.

In the words of Zig Ziglar, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

5. Don’t Be Afraid Of Failure

If you have experienced failure in the past, great! Failure is a normal part of the learning process of life. Thank your failures for the lessons and then let them go.

Accept and learn from your past, but don’t live there, because it doesn’t dictate your future in any way unless you allow it to. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you will get what you’ve always gotten.

It’s easy to feel shitty when things don’t go your way, but if you want to truly succeed as an entrepreneur you have to use pain as motivation, and develop the mindset and the willpower to keep pushing despite the obstacles that stand in your way.

Use failure as a tool for growth and change. It has the ability to propel you forward and prepare you for what lies ahead.

Being a successful entrepreneur doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a long-term commitment, but the payoff is sweet. This is the best entrepreneur advice for beginners. I challenge you to start utilizing these skills in your business. The result? Business mastery.

The post 5 Areas Of Life Where Persistence Pays Off appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

]]>
Do you want to learn about the 5 areas of life where persistence pays off? If you want to master all areas of your life, you need to understand the value of persistence. However, it's not enough to know something. Life mastery requires that you actually live it, every day.

If you want to achieve anything in life it will require that you possess a killer combination of sheer willpower, determination, and desire.

When it comes to personal development and dating, I understand how important it is for men to develop the communication and confidence skills that are necessary in order to attract a partner into their lives.

When I was 21 years old I started a dating coaching business, that was designed to help men overcome the confidence challenges that I had faced in my own life.

That is why I wanted to invite Eddy Baller, a men's personal development and dating coach, to write a guest post to talk about 5 areas of life where persistence pays off.

Take it away Eddy!

I want to share with you 5 areas of life where persistence pays off. How many of us have embarked on a new journey to accomplish something big, only to become disillusioned and quit when it didn’t work out?

The human mind is notoriously bad at making time predictions for complicated goals. Even showing up on time seems to be a challenge for some people. “I have time, I’ll just finish a few emails…”

The biggest challenges in life usually require a lot of time, and it’s hard to predict how much time. The key ingredient which separates the cream of the crop is persistence – the raw determination and grit that comes from sticking to your goals.

Here are 5 areas of life where persistence pays off:

1. Dating

Anyone who’s ever gone on dates can attest to the fact that dating isn’t always easy. If you’re interested in finding the love of your life, it means going through a lot of ‘candidates’. Shyness and social anxiety can become a serious handicap for someone when it comes to dating.

Being successful in the dating world requires a number of skills, some of which include, learning how to approach women or men, conversational skills, body language, confidence, assertiveness, boundary setting, and more.

If you want to find a partner that is right for you, it will require persistence, in addition to mastering the above skills.

Action step: Get a dating coach or connect with someone who seems to have their dating life together. Learn how they’ve created an abundant love life and emulate their best practices.

2. Relationships

Dating skills are just the first part of our romantic journeys. Once we’ve found a long-term partner, we need a new tool box to keep the romance alive.

A lot of dating skills still apply; confidence, body language, boundaries to name a few, but now we have to learn how to share our space, grow together, and keep it exciting in the bedroom.

It also requires paying attention to our partner's communication style and learning their habits, so that we can avoid unnecessary clashes. This shows that we really understand them.

Action step: Dedicate at least one night per week as a ‘date night’. It’s too easy to get caught up in the business of life and family. Put aside time for a quality get together so that your bond continues to grow.

3. Business

Building a business is tough. There are a myriad of setbacks that are designed to test your ability to persist, which include lack of know how, lack of resources, not having the right people when you need them, bootstrapping, and more.

For those who stay in the fight, the turning point shows up as a change in focus, experience, and a new direction, which may not have been clear in the beginning stages.

Action step: Invest in business and marketing training. Too many people try winging it and end up quitting when it doesn’t work.

4. Mindset

At the age of 20, I was an extremely negative person and all of my friends were negative too. Every day I played the same record in my head. It was always, “people suck”, “rich people suck”, “everything is expensive”, “the weather is no good”, and on and on.

I became tired of my own attitude and wanted to change. I knew that if I kept hanging out with the same people I wouldn't be able to grow. So I decided to start from scratch and distance myself from my old friends.

I set out to learn better social skills to make friends, meet women, and change my mindset. It took years to make serious progress, but the alternative was unthinkable.

Action step: To create a more positive mindset, work on reframing negative thoughts on a daily basis. Just look for the positive angle to the thought you were in the middle of. Do this daily and soon you will start thinking in a different way.

5. Emotions (EQ)

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, has a huge effect on our social success. It allows us to read other people's feelings, understand ourselves, and communicate effectively. People that have a low EQ have weak connections with others.

On the other hand, people with a strong EQ have healthier friendships, romances, and business relationships. When you learn how to master your emotions, you master your life.

Action step: Start by learning more about your own habits and emotions. How do you react to different situations? What happens to your body language when you’re feeling positive or negative emotions?

These are 5 areas of life where persistence pays off! What is one area of your life where persistence has paid off for you? Comment below and let me know!

I want to teach you how to develop habits of success. Your success in life is determined, in part, by the decisions that you make on a daily basis, otherwise known as your habits.

Habits are powerful. They define who we are, and in doing so, have the ability to control the direction that our lives take. We are driven to seek routines in our daily lives because they are deemed as ‘safe.’ New habits that pose as a threat to our sense of security can be stressful.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Any new habit takes time, commitment and hard work to develop. However, once you do something consistently, it becomes easier to integrate it into your daily life.

A new study from MIT neuroscientists has found that a small region of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, where most thought and planning occurs, is responsible for moment-by-moment control of which habits are switched on at a given time. This study offers hope that it is possible to break bad habits.

In the words of Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Are you ready to break your bad habits and replace them with habits of success?

Below are 3 strategies that will help you develop habits of success:

1. Change One Habit At A Time

Changing one routine requires an immense amount of willpower and commitment, let alone multiple ones. A lot of people struggle with building new habits because they make them either too big or too difficult.

There have been extensive studies that show that it’s impossible to change multiple habits because ego depletion kicks in, which leaves our willpower in a mentally weakened state. I believe that the best time to develop new habits of success is the morning, as part of your morning ritual. This is when your willpower is the strongest.

The best way to integrate new habits into your life is to make small, incremental changes every day. In the words of Seth Godin, “Your audacious life goals are fabulous. We're proud of you for having them. But it's possible that those goals are designed to distract you from the thing that's really frightening you—the shift in daily habits that would mean a re–invention of how you see yourself.”

2. Commit To A 30 Day Challenge

Committing to a 30 day challenge is a great way to develop habits of success. Research shows that it requires a minimum of 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to jell. It will take the same amount of time for a new habit to develop.

I’ve done 30 day challenges around exercising, waking up early, scheduling my time, and building my business. Every day I practice and develop one habit. By the end of that 30 days, the habit has successfully integrated itself into my daily life.

An accountability partner helps you stay committed to your 30 day challenge. He or she will motivate you to achieve the goal(s) that you set for yourself. Bob Proctor said it best, “Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to results.”

I created a 30 day morning ritual challenge for my Morning Ritual Mastery course members, wherein which over a 30 day period I have them make a daily post on their social media about the one habit that they carried out as part of their morning ritual. Having a support network in place is a powerful way to form healthy, long-lasting habits.

3. Reward Yourself

Every time you do something positive, celebrate yourself. An action needs to be repeated in order for it to become a habit, which is why it’s really important that you reward yourself each time you practice a new habit.

When you take time every day to acknowledge the small actions that you took towards your goals, you strengthen those actions. Whatever you reward, gets repeated.

In the words of Jonas Salk, “The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more.”

These are 3 strategies that will help you develop habits of success. Positive habits create the energy that fuels success in life. Commit to having daily morning rituals. One positive change in your life will motivate you to implement even more habits. It all begins with one small win!

The post 3 Ways To Hold Yourself Accountable To Your Goals appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

]]>
I would like to share 3 ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals. From time to time, all of us have struggled to stay consistent with the goals that we set for ourselves.

It's one thing to set goals, but actually accomplishing them takes commitment, energy, discipline, and hard work. When we don't see results fast enough, it is easy to lose our motivation and fall into a negative thinking trap.

All of us have personal goals that we want to master, but many people become easily distracted by shiny objects or new ideas. The result is that they end up jumping from opportunity to opportunity, without accomplishing anything.

Accountability is an inside job. If you want to create positive change in your life, you need to take responsibility for the decisions that you make. In the words of Stephen Covey, “Accountability breeds response-ability.”

1. Find An Accountability Partner

When you are accountable to others, you are more likely to follow-through on your goals. Conversely, when you don't have someone in your corner, cheering you on and checking-up on you, it is easy to make excuses for why you can't accomplish something.

The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person that you’ve committed to, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.

An accountability partner, like a coach or a mentor, can give you the motivation that you need in order to take action when you are not where you want to be in life.

George Matthew Adams said it best – ““There is no such thing as a ‘self-made’ man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.”

2. Develop Good Habits

If you want to achieve your goals, you need to commit to developing good habits. In doing so, it primes your brain for success. Research shows that the best way to improve your overall health and well-being is to start a new regular habit.

The most effective way to transform your goals into habits is to create a morning ritual. In the morning, you have the most willpower at your disposal, and so your motivation is at its peak.

Accountability is about willpower, and willpower is similar to a muscle. If it's possible for muscles to get stronger over time with training, willpower can do the same. In the words of Joshua Miller, “Personal accountability isn’t a trait that people are born with, it’s a way of living that you can learn.”

3. Find Your Purpose

Finding your purpose is a critical element to achieving your goals and experiencing fulfillment in life. By nature, having a purpose breeds accountability.

When you are living your purpose and doing what you love, you naturally want to be accountable to yourself and others because you are committed to something greater than yourself.

Write your purpose down, and read it out loud to yourself every day. When you do so, it will inspire you to stay committed to your goals and take action.

I challenge you to try out these 3 ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals. At the end of the day, mastering any goal in life requires that you make a conscious commitment to take action. It all starts and ends with you.

I would like to share with you 3 steps for breaking bad habits. Everyone has bad habits that are hard to kick, whether that's smoking, eating fast food, or consuming alcohol. Bad habits are a sure way to slow you down and decrease your productivity. When you allow a bad habit to take over your life, you inhibit your opportunities for success.

In his popular book, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessCharles Duhigg cites a study from Duke University that shows that 40-45% of our daily actions are actually habits. Your daily actions make you who you are and determine how you choose to move throughout your life. What do your habits say about you?

One study found that people who exercise a high degree of self-control tend to be much happier than those who don’t, both in the moment and in the long run (Bradberry, 2017). If you want to be successful in life, you need to break bad habits. Doing so requires a large amount of willpower and self-control, but it all starts with developing a mastery mindset.

Here are 3 steps for breaking bad habits:

1. Commit to Change

If you want to break any bad habit, you need to first commit to making a change. By nature, we are creatures of habit. Change makes us feel uncomfortable. Leo Babauta, author of the blog, Zen Habits, is a fan of tackling one habit change at a time. Be kind to yourself. It takes a lot of energy and willpower to unlearn a behaviour.

The more that you engage in a bad habit – like smoking, gossiping, or surfing the web – the harder it is to change that habit. When you decide which bad habits you want to change, make sure that your goals for doing so are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bounded).

2. Discover The Cause

Once you have committed to changing your bad habits, you need to discover what it is that causes you to take part in them in the first place. Have you ever made a decision to break a bad habit and then you fail? The resulting emotion is often guilt, which is a horrible feeling. Next time this happens, ask yourself, “What rewards am I receiving from engaging in these bad habits?”

This will require you to dig deep, go inward, and do some soul-searching. Change will not be possible until you do so. Once you know what cue triggers your bad habits, and what reward you are receiving from them, you then need to build new habits, in order to replace the bad ones.

3. Create A Ritual

The best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one, which is where the power of a morning ritual comes into play. The most successful people in the world have morning rituals. The mornings set the tone for how the rest of your day will unfold. When I do my morning ritual, I feel unstoppable.

Imagine how great it would feel if you could be more productive, have more energy, and be happier on a daily basis. When you take the time to honour yourself every morning, your entire day will transform. If you are consistent with your morning ritual, you will eventually break your bad habits.

John C. Maxwell said it best – “You will never change your life until you change something that you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” Are you ready to change your bad habits, and replace them with healthy, empowering ones? There is no better time than today to get started!

I would like to share with you some reasons why you should meditate every day. This is a practice that has greatly impacted my life. Meditation is one of the most effective ways to cope with stress and find a sense of inner calmness and peace from the daily pressures that life brings.

In AsapScience’s, “The Scientific Power of Meditation,” Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown explain that meditation yields a number of benefits, including the ability to fight (not cure) diseases, increase empathy, and even leads to physical changes in the brain (Borreli, 2015).

How would it feel to start your day feeling calm and grounded? Let the power of meditation help you achieve this peaceful state of being. In the words of Ram Dass, “The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” There is no greater reason for why you should meditate every day.

I am not a master of meditation, but it is something that I have committed to going deeper with over the last six months. Intellectually I always knew that meditation was good for me, but I never did it because I didn’t associate to it on an emotional level.

Once I forced myself to meditate over a period of time and started to notice the benefits that it had on my emotional, mental, and spiritual state, then I believed in its potential to change my life. So much so, that meditation is now a part of my daily morning ritual.

Sometimes in life you need to do something that you don’t necessarily want to do, in order to see the long-term benefits of it. Just like going to the gym every day and committing to exercise your body. When you first start exercising, you may experience discomfort and soreness, and you might think, “What is the benefit of this?”

However, when you start seeing changes in your body and energy levels, you realize why you took the time to exercise in the first place. The same thing goes with meditation. There is nothing better that you can do than to learn how to calm your strongest muscle – your mind. Once you start seeing the benefits of meditation, it will motivate you to go even deeper, because you will start seeing the purpose of it.

The trigger that got me into meditation was a pattern that I started noticing, which was negatively affecting my life. I realized that I had an addiction. Let me be clear that an addiction can be to anything – to shopping, food, video games, pornography, information, etc. It doesn’t have to be something drastic, like drug or alcohol abuse.

Here is the test to know whether or not you have an addiction to something – try taking time away from a pattern of behaviour that you consistently find yourself doing. If you have cravings or temptations to bring it back into your life, that’s when you know it is a problem.

I had an addiction to technology. I found that every time that I felt uncomfortable or experienced a negative emotion, I would take out my phone and look through my social media. I found myself spending way too much time online. All addiction stems from a fear of emptiness and being alone.

Human beings are so terrified of being present and doing NOTHING, that oftentimes uncomfortable feeling emerge within them. They use things in order to distract themselves. What are you distracting yourself from? For a lot of people, it means distracting themselves from something that needs to be healed or resolved internally.

When we feel like we have no control over our lives, we tend to resist or avoid what is going on inside our body, mind, and soul. Through meditation, I learned that the way to overcome my addiction was to practice being present and experience nothing for a short period of time.

Always remember that whatever you resist will persist. If thoughts come up, merely observe them. Let them come into your mind, accept them, and then let them go. Since I started meditating, I feel more empowered and complete on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level. I have more control over my mind and my thoughts.

When you master your mind, you become less reactive. Today, I find that I am more present and in the moment when I am interacting with people, both in my work and in my personal life. I meditate for 20 minutes twice a day, usually in the afternoons and then before bed. I’ve experimented with all kinds of meditation.

I’ve learned that, as with any industry or school of thought, ultimately you need to find what works for you. If you think you are too busy to meditate, think again. Studies have shown that meditating just ten minutes a day reduces stress, lowers cortisol levels, and improves your outlook on life (Sarich, 2015). These are some reasons why you should meditate every day.

We all lead busy lives, but if we want to achieve life mastery, it is important that we feel a sense of balance, in our body, mind, and soul. Take the time to invest in yourself. Go deeper and embrace the power of meditation. You don’t have to be a guru in order to enjoy the benefits that meditation provides.

In the words of Eckhart Tolle, “One conscious breath – in and out – is a meditation.” Your mind will thank you for it.
