Are bad habits & addictions preventing you from achieving your potential in life?

We are creatures of habit. According to research from Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviors on any given day.

All of the habits in your life, both good and bad, serve a purpose.

In many cases, bad habits exist to keep us safe or comfortable. Hence why it is difficult to overcome them.

If you're ready to rid your life of thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that sabotage your success, read this!

What are habits and why do they matter?

Habits are unconscious behaviors that are repeated over time. When I refer to habits I'm not just talking about actions and behaviors. I'm also referring to feelings and thoughts. As an example, you can habitually experience feelings of sadness, anger, or loneliness.

The more that you experience these feelings, the more that you allow these negative emotional states to define who you are. The same thing applies to your thoughts. Overthinking, criticizing, and judging yourself and others are habitual ways of thinking.

Keep in mind that if you feed your bad habits, you'll breathe life into those habits. Awareness is the critical step to changing any bad habit or addiction. Willpower isn't enough. You have to familiarize yourself with your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Not only that, but you have to understand why you think and behave in certain ways. We all have bad habits. I want to encourage you to take out your journal and write down 1-3 bad habits that YOU want to change. Can you identify with any of these bad habits?

  • Procrastination
  • Laziness
  • Sleeping in or staying up too late
  • Binging on social media
  • Gambling
  • Watching pornography
  • Binging on TV shows
  • Shopping
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Smoking weed
  • Overworking
  • Overthinking

I want to teach you some practical techniques that will help you break free from disempowering habits. First and foremost, if you want to break a habit, you must make a habit. One reason why a lot of people aren't able to make lasting changes is that they don't replace a bad habit with something new.

In effect, they trade one bad habit for another bad habit.

All habits serve a positive intention in your life, even the worst of addictions. Ideally, when you replace a bad habit, you want the new habit to fulfill a similar need that the original habit provided for you. In his book, The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg wrote, “We know that a habit cannot be eradicated. Instead, it must be replaced.”

The Habit Cycle

Part 1: Trigger

This is an instant energy shift that occurs in the body after being triggered by something or someone. Triggers are biologically hard-wired. Thus, you'll always be triggered. The good news is that you can change your relationship with your triggers. Mindfulness is a great way to become acutely aware of them.

Part 2: Thoughts

Thoughts happen fast. As a result, a lot of people are not consciously aware of their thoughts, which is why they act on impulse. The thoughts that you want to pay attention to are the negative self-deprecating ones. These are the ones that lead to bad habits.

Take one 1-minute right now and write down all of the thoughts, negative or positive, that you're thinking. Write them down in quotations as they appear. This simple exercise is a powerful way to become an observer of your thoughts. By writing them down, you will become aware of which thoughts show up continually.

Part 3: Action

This is when you take action, based on what your trigger and thought are. Most often, the action is what leads you to the behavior of whatever it is that you're indulging in. Being aware of your triggers and thoughts is what will give you the power to change your behavior.

To make any shift in your life, you must become aware of this habit cycle. You have to create space between the trigger, the thought, and the action, meaning you have to become consciously and acutely aware of what's happening.

In his book, Man's Search for Meaning, Victor Frankl documented his experience of being imprisoned inside of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. He determined that, while we can't avoid suffering, we can always choose how we respond and find meaning.

Frankl once said, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space, is our power to choose our response. In our response, lies our growth and our freedom.”

Strategies To Break Bad Habits

Below I've listed some tested and proven ways to break bad habits and replace them with good ones. You can implement any or all of these into your life.

1. Journaling

I highly recommend that you journal your thoughts daily. Journaling is a powerful way to connect with yourself on a deeper level. When you understand yourself better, you are better able to avoid triggers and make decisions that best serve your highest self.

2. Mindfulness Meditation

The opposite of a habit is mindfulness.  Habits are automatic, meaning that you engage in them unconsciously. Conversely, mindfulness involves being acutely aware of your thoughts in the present moment, without judgment.

Without awareness, you can't change anything. I'm a big believer in the power of mindful meditation. When you are fully in the present moment and not reacting to the world around you, you become less attached to your thoughts.

3. Wrong Thought Right Thought Exercise

The next time that you have a negative thought, say out loud to yourself, “Wrong thought” and replace it with the right thought. By challenging your negative automatic thoughts, you'll change your internal dialogue, and in turn, your life.

4. Thank You/Goodbye Letter To Your Bad Habit

Thank your bad habit for what it provided you with, whether that was comfort, security, pleasure, or a sense of adventure. Acknowledge the positive attributes and the needs that your bad habit fulfilled.

Once you've done this, you want to remind your bad habit of all of the reasons why you are letting them go. Write the letter as if you're breaking up with your bad habit.

This is how to break bad habits & addictions.

Identifying which bad habits you are ready to break free from is the first step to overcoming them. Strive for progress, not perfection.

Making mistakes is a part of the journey that comes with breaking bad habits. Stick with the process and remember that when you change your habits, you change your life.

Are you settling for mediocrity?

Mediocrity is the state of accepting and living life according to average standards.

I understand why settling is tempting. I've been there. It's the safer option. Unfortunately, nothing grows in a comfort zone.

You can be, do and have whatever it is that you want in life. However, you have to be willing to do what most will not.

If you want to know how you can stop playing small and start living bigger, read this!

Are you ready to break free from the mediocre majority?

Unfortunately, the majority of people lower their standards and settle for less. They don't know how to take charge of their life. Instead, they try to escape their reality by numbing their emotions through drugs, food, or alcohol. Their goal is to avoid how they truly feel.

They work, day in and day out, at a job that they hate and live paycheck to paycheck. Although they are unhappy and desire to make a change, the unknown terrifies them. So much so that they decide to remain complacent.

The problem is that we live in a society that encourages us to conform to social norms. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour shows that people tend to copy other people’s choices, even when they know that those people did not make their choices freely, and when the decision does not reflect their preferences.

If you do whatever everyone else does, you'll get what everyone else gets – not much! Fitting in should never be the goal. Rather, you should strive to stand out. This is the moment at which you take control of your life.

Get real with yourself… are you stuck in a mediocrity trap?

Are you living life on other people's terms or your terms? I don't know about you but living a life of mediocrity is the one thing that terrifies me the most. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

If you're not satisfied with your life right now, here's the great news… YOU have the power to change your story. At this moment, you can commit to living bigger. Doing so will require that you raise their standards so that you can design a life that you desire and deserve.

Before you can live bigger, you need to understand what your current mental model is. People live in 3 different time zones, so to speak – the past, the present, or the future.

Living in the past is the WORST place to focus your attention because the past is said and done. You no longer have control over it.

You cannot create a compelling future or make any progress in life if you take this route. A lot of people ruminate on the pain of what happened to them in the past. They adopt a victim mentality because they don't think that they have the power to change their circumstances. I used to be this person.

When I was 17 years old, I was insecure and depressed. I hated myself and my life, and I didn't believe that I could change. Once I dove into the world of self-development, I decided to no longer accept self-defeat. I realized that my past didn't have to equal my future. That “aha” moment was a game-changer.

Some people choose to live in the present moment.

The present moment is all that we have, so we have to make the best of it!

However, there are consequences to adopting this belief. If you live in the here and now and focus on instant gratification at the expense of your future, you will get yourself into trouble.

If you're not planning for your retirement NOW and investing in your future, you will pay the price down the road. Yes, it's hard to save your money and make sacrifices. However, what's even harder is when you're 65 years old and you can barely survive financially. That's painful.

Only you can choose your version of hard. The same thing goes for your health. Today, you can flood your body with whatever you want – junk food, alcohol, drugs. However, down the road, you will pay the price.

Are the pleasures that you are indulging in right now going to backfire on you in your future? Is this way of living sustainable, long-term?

You don't want your physical vitality to be comprised. Living with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, or cancer is no way to live. At a certain point in your life, if you do get sick, no amount of money will save you.

Some of the wealthiest people in the world would give all of their money away if it meant that they could live longer. What dictates the quality of your health long-term is how you decide to live in the present moment.

Some people live in the future.

They strategize and anticipate what could go wrong. Usually, this means sacrificing their present moment experiences to set themselves up for success down the road.

At the same time, if you're only living for the future and you become overly obsessed with the destination, you will miss out on the journey.

So the question is… What is the BEST way to live?

Well, I think you can have a balance of all three. The best thing that you can do is learn from your past, enjoy the beauty of the present moment, and plan for your future. The key to accomplishing this feat is by raising your standards.

Don't accept mediocrity. Hear me out… you can settle for good. However, we live in a competitive world. Good isn't good enough, especially if you're an entrepreneur. If you want to be successful in business, you have to over-deliver and do what others will not.

The same thing goes for a 9-5 job. You won't climb the corporate ladder if you don't go above and beyond in your role. Somebody else will come along and do a better job because they will be more hungry to stand out and achieve more.

The same thing goes for a relationship. If you don't show up for your partner's needs and do the work, he/she will not feel seen and may look elsewhere for attention.

If your version of good is not yielding the results that you desire, you have to commit to doing better. Practice doing hard things consistently.

This is how you develop unshakeable grit and become the master of your world.

It all comes down to one decision – how you are going to play the game of life? Will you choose to be a spectator, sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone else succeed, or will you be the superstar of your life?

Yes, choosing the latter can be scary and uncomfortable. However, it's better to dare greatly than never try. If you're reading this, you're not a dabbler. You're showing up for yourself and consuming knowledge because you want to learn and grow. Am I right?

If you're feeling stuck right now, that's OK. It's not comfortable to reflect upon where you're falling short. However, it's also a prerequisite for growth. If you don't get real with yourself and admit what is not working in your life, you won't know what you need to change.

Use your pain as motivation. Which pain is worse? The pain of discipline or the pain of regret? Only you can answer this question.

I don't know about you, but I would rather endure the pain of discipline so that I can write on my tombstone one day, “I lived with no f*ucking regrets.”

Are you settling in your life?

If so, now is the time to do something about it. Stop settling for less than you deserve. Your spirit is unlimited and you are capable of so much more than you could ever imagine.

It's time for you to get out of your way, stop sabotaging yourself, and start unleashing your power. Everything that you need is inside of you. It's up to you to decide if you are ready to embark on your hero's journey.

With transformation comes adversity. If you want to actualize your potential, you must courageously stay the course. It's not what you achieve, but who you become along your journey that matters most.

In the words of the famous author Joseph Campbell, “If you travel far enough, you’ll eventually meet yourself.”

What is ONE thing that you will commit to doing today that will help you raise your standards? Change starts with a single step. Take a deep breath and start walking.

Self-care is not selfish… you know that, right?

We live in a society where “busyness” has become a status symbol for success. People have become addicted to being too busy because it makes them feel important.

They equate free time with a lack of success, assuming that anyone who isn't crazy busy must be lazy. Here's the thing… the opposite of busyness isn’t laziness. Rather, it's about balancing your priorities.

It's about taking control of your time so that you can lead a more purposeful life. Don't get me wrong… I'm not saying that you shouldn't be a hard worker.

However, if you operate on autopilot 24/7 and don't take care of your most important asset – YOU – you will eventually burn out. In this state, you won't be able to do much of anything (trust me, I've been there). This is why you must make yourself a priority.

These 10 self-help hacks are the ones that have benefitted my life the most. I hope they will be of benefit to you. Let's dive in!

1. Act As If You're Already The Person You Want To Be

You may already have an idea of who you want to be. What does the highest version of yourself look like? You have an opportunity to step into this role at any given moment, meaning to act AS IF you are already that person.

As Joe Dispenza says in his book, Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself, you are not hardwired to be a certain way for the rest of your life. Who you are is not who you have to be in the future.

If you want to break the mold of your current limitations, you have to act like the person you want to be. How would the person you want to be in 5-10 years from now think and act?

Practice being that person. It's not easy to do this because your current identity wants to preserve itself. Your identity doesn't want you to be anything other than what you are familiar with.

However, you must be willing to step outside of your zone of comfort and start behaving in ways that you wouldn't normally behave.

2. Surround Yourself With People You Want To Be Like

Who you become will be determined, in large part, by the people you surround yourself with. Your environment influences you more than anything else.

If you spend time with negative and lazy people who lack goals and a vision for their life, you will become those people. Conversely, if you want to be successful, you have to surround yourself with people who already have the kind of life that you want.

In the words of Jim Rohn, “Who you spend time with is who you become.” It's not necessarily comfortable being around people who are smarter than you.  However, growth is never comfortable.

Successful people will inspire you to raise your standards. Just by being in their presence, you will start to mimic their behaviors and embody their success.

3. Set Boundaries For Yourself

We all get caught up engaging in things that don't serve us, whether that's playing video games, eating junk food, or scrolling on social media.

Get real with yourself… what behavior are you engaging in right now that is NOT allowing you to become the best version of yourself? We all need boundaries for ourselves.

The purpose of a boundary is to help you keep track of your behavior. I encourage you to make a list of everything that you do daily for one week.

With each thing that you do, ask yourself if this activity is supporting you or holding you back from becoming the person that you want to be. If it's not supporting you, limit the amount of time you spend engaging in it or eliminate it altogether.

4. Focus On Your One Thing Everyday

There is always ONE thing that is more important than everything else in your life. In his book, The One Thing, Gary Keller teaches that there are so many things that you could be doing right now.

However, not all of those actions are equal in terms of their level of importance.  The highest leverage thing that you should be doing is the very thing that you will tend to avoid.

Why?

Because it takes the most effort, or it's something that you fear. You've got to feel the fear and act despite it. Don't mistake activity with achievement. You can be ‘active' throughout your day.

However, that doesn't mean that you're necessarily achieving anything. For example, does cleaning the house and running errands help you get the results that you want in your life?

The act of getting things done on your to-do list may make you feel accomplished, but it won't transform your life. Identify which task will help you get the results that you want and make it a priority.

Big rewards require big actions. If you do one important thing every day for 30 days, you will accomplish more than most people will in an entire year.

5. Get To A Level 10 Peak State

What you do in life is dependent on how you feel. Throughout your day, you will experience different emotional states. Unfortunately, a lot of people get caught up in habitual negative emotional states.

They condition themselves to feel fearful, anxious, or overwhelmed. Not surprisingly, if you're in a lousy state, you'll be more likely to be reactive and distracted.

This is why my morning ritual is non-negotiable. It sets me up to win. Every day you have a choice… you can either be controlled by the external world or you can be the master of your emotions.

Decide to put yourself in a level 10 peak state every day. This is the best version of yourself. Maybe this means feeling confident, successful, happy, resilient, or productive.

Train and condition yourself to experience this empowering state of being. One of the ways that I like to put myself into a peak state is to listen to my favorite song first thing in the morning.

I like to turn up the speakers, jump up and down on my rebounder and recite incantations. By changing my physiology, I change my emotional experience. Instantly, I go to a level 10.

Find what works for you, whether that's exercising, meditating, or dancing. Whatever your level 10 is, commit to putting yourself into a peak state daily.

6. Practice Positive Reinforcement

Whatever gets rewarded, gets repeated. Thus, you need to give yourself positive reinforcement every time that you engage in positive behavior. Doing so allows you to link pleasure to the behavior.

In turn, you'll be motivated to perform the behavior again. Reinforcers may include hugging yourself, writing down 3 things that you celebrate about yourself, or treating yourself to a nice dinner.

The more that you celebrate your wins, the better you will feel about yourself, and the more motivated you will be to achieve more.

7. Celebrate Other People's Success

When you celebrate other people's successes, you'll be more likely to move towards that which you desire. By acknowledging others, you are reminding yourself of the success traits that you want to embody in your life.

Conversely, if you are judgmental or critical of peoples' successes, you'll create that which you don't want through a self-fulfilling prophecy. Don't operate from a place of lack.

Remember that there is enough success for everyone and that your time will come. We need examples of people who defeat the odds and accomplish amazing feats. Watching someone else achieve their goals should empower you to do the same.

8. Model Success

Whatever you want in life, there is someone who already has it. Success always leaves clues. Successful people aren't lucky, nor were they born successful. Rather, they created success.

If you download their mindset, beliefs, and behaviors, you can get similar results. Whenever I find inspirational quotes from incredible human beings throughout history, I like to write them down on flashcards. People's words are a reflection of their beliefs.

If I want to adopt someone's beliefs, I will upload their words to my brain by reciting them out loud, again and again. Doing so allows me to take on their beliefs more readily.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel. The fastest way to achieve success is through modeling other people's success. Find one person or a group of people who are further ahead than you.

Consume their knowledge and apply what it is that you learn from them. This is how you will shorten the learning curve and compress decades into days.

9. Hire A Coach To Help You Raise Your Game

When you decide to raise your standards, you change your life. Don't get me wrong… you can always do things on your own. However, if you work with a coach, they will get more out of you than you would ever be able to get from yourself.

A great coach pushes you to become more. They will be able to pinpoint your limitations and help you practice getting outside of your comfort zone. Having this kind of accountability is a game-changer.

Growth isn't comfortable, but it is the only thing that leads to lasting results. If you're ready to stop playing small and start upgrading every area of your life, invest in yourself. Your future self will thank you for it.

10. Create A Morning Ritual

How you start the day is how you end the day. The things that you do first thing in the morning either set you up for success or failure. If you wake up in the morning stressed, slam a coffee, and eat a surgery donut, you'll be more inclined to feed your mind with negativity.

In turn, you'll be reactive to anything and everything. Conversely, if you wake up and practice gratitude, read inspiring quotes and meditate, you'll feel better and perform at your best.

Take the first hour of your day to do something empowering for your mind, body, and spirit. There is no perfect morning ritual. Find what works best for you and your life.

These are 10 self-help hacks for improving your life.

Make it a priority to continuously look for ways to better yourself. If you make it a habit to practice these hacks daily, you will start seeing positive changes in yourself. Which self-help hack will you implement into your life today?

Why do bad habits feel so good?

Whether it's eating junk food, smoking, playing video games, binging on Netflix shows, or incessantly scrolling on social media, the goal is usually to numb out and self-soothe.

Our brains are constantly bombarded by stimuli created to make us crave and consume. However, when these behaviors become automatic, we enter into the dangerous territory of self-sabotage.

The best way to break bad habits is to first become aware of them.

What is a bad habit?

A bad habit is a frequent behavior pattern that you deem to have a negative impact on some aspect of your life. We all have bad habits. If you're ever tried breaking a bad habit you know how difficult and frustrating it can be. Habits (both good and bad) are formed through repetition until they become automatic behaviors.

Before you can change any behavior, you need to learn to recognize the automatic habits that rob you of your mental and emotional strength. Once you have that awareness, you need to commit to changing what is no longer working and replacing it with something that does.

When your habits no longer serve you and lead to bad outcomes, you know it's time to reboot your internal software. Let's face it – we can be our worst enemies. It's a lot easier to blame others or the external world for our circumstances in life. The truth of the matter is that we tend to be the one who sabotages our potential.

If you are someone who struggles with self-sabotaging behaviors, I want to help you change these disempowering mental scripts once and for all. Let's talk about 3 bad habits that are sabotaging your success.

Bad Habit #1 – Adopting An “I Know That” Mentality

The three most dangerous words in the human vocabulary are, “I know that.” When you speak these words you close off your mind from learning anything new. This way of thinking cripples your mindset and sabotages your ability to create success.

Here's how I see it… if you're not taking action on something that you know, then you don't know it. You've got to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. This is why you must drop your ego, humble yourself and be a student of life.

The most successful people in the world commit to constant and never-ending improvement. As a result, they expose themselves to a world of new possibilities and opportunities.

When you drop the “I know that” mentality and adopt an attitude of curiosity, it drives you to discover who you are and what matters to you, rather than trying to merely impress others.

Bad Habit #2 – Settling For Mediocrity

I don't want to come to the end of my life and have a feeling of regret. A lot of people settle for mediocrity, whether it's in their job, relationships, or lifestyle choices.

They accept less, let their dreams fall by the wayside, and follow what everybody else is doing. In the words of Henry David Thoreau – “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.”

I don't know about you, but that's the last thing that I want to be written on my tombstone. I want to be remembered as someone who maximized their potential and lived life to the fullest. Do you?

Living a mediocre life takes a toll on one's mental and emotional health. In my opinion, this is no way to live.  I want to encourage you to NEVER settle for a life of mediocrity. Life is way too precious to play small. You have dreams, goals, and desires that deserve to be awakened and manifested. Dare to be different, carve your own path, and live life on your terms.

Bad Habit #3 – Being Indecisive

The decisions that you make shape your entire life. Everything in your life exists because of the choices that you've made. If those choices have taken you down a road that no longer makes you happy, it's time to make different decisions.

People tend to be indecisive because they are terrified of making the wrong choice, for fear that they will fail. Guess what… there is no perfect decision. Sometimes making any decision is better than making no decision, as long as the choice you make is a healthy and empowering one.

Keep in mind that the big decisions aren't what change your life. Rather, it's the small decisions that you make each day. From what you put in your body, to the thoughts you think, to where you work, to the people with whom you surround yourself with.

When you commit to changing bad habits and replacing them with good ones, give yourself a small reward for doing so. This will help to reinforce your motivation and make the new habit habitual.

These 3 bad habits are sabotaging your success.

Knowing that you have bad habits isn't enough. That isn't what is going to change your life. It's only the first step to change. The next step is to take massive action.

The best way to break bad habits is to replace them with more empowering ones. To maximize your chance of succeeding with this, make sure that you avoid the triggers that cause the bad habits in the first place. More importantly, practice engaging in your new healthy habits every single day.

I'm not going to lie… breaking bad habits takes a lot of time, patience, and willpower. However, once you stop sabotaging yourself you'll attract more of what you want in life. When you change your habits, you begin the process of improving every area of your life. You can do this. Believe!

Personal growth requires that you change.

Nothing in your life will change unless you do. As Jim Rohn famously said, “For things to change, you have to change. For things to get better, you have to get better. For things to improve, you have to improve. When you grow, everything in your life grows with you.” Who I am today is the direct result of my commitment to self-development.

When I was 17 years old, I was in a dark place in my life. I was a shy and introverted kid who struggled with crippling anxiety and depression. On top of that, I was addicted to video games. The fantasy world that I created online was my way of escaping reality. It's hard to admit this, but I hated myself and my life. I felt helpless.

Self-development was my saving grace. It made me believe that I could be, do, and have ANYTHING that I wanted. All of a sudden, I discovered a world of new possibilities. Before that time, I didn't think that I could change. I assumed that I would always be anxious and depressed. I was wrong. From that moment onward, I got rid of everything that was limiting my life.

When I started my self-development journey my ultimate goal in life was to achieve self-mastery. To this day, it is something that I continuously strive for in every aspect of my life. Every day I ask myself, “How can I be better today than I was yesterday?”

I guess you could say that I am addicted to improving myself.

The benefits of investing in my personal growth and development have been far-reaching. Once you get a taste for and experience the changes that occur in your life as a result of self-help, you get a thirst for more! Over the years I have invested in my personal growth in many different ways, whether it be reading books, hiring coaches and mentors, attending seminars, or biohacking my health.

People ask me all of the time what self-help books I recommend that they read. My response is always the same, “What area of your life are you most focused on right now?” or “What problem do you want to overcome?” That is usually how I determine what books I want to read.

It is through improving yourself that you will get the most out of your life. The more that you grow and improve, the more that your income will grow too. Let's dive into the top 10 books that will change your life.

1. Awaken The Giant Within, Tony Robbins

This book changed my life when I was 18 years old. It continues to remain my favorite book of all time.

Tony Robbins has and continues to be my biggest role model in the self-development world. He has achieved mastery in multiple areas of his life. This book is like a self-mastery blueprint for how you can step up and start taking control of your life. He has a shorter summary of this book called Notes From A Friend. I encourage you to read this book anytime you are going through a difficult time in life, as it can be finishing within an hour or two. However, don't read it until you've read Awaken The Giant Within.

2. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom, Don Miguel Ruiz

Inside this book, Ruiz talks about the Four Agreements that we should all live by, which are as follows:

  1. Be impeccable with your word
  2. Don't take things personally
  3. Don't make assumptions and
  4. Always do your best

Ruiz believes that, as children, we are conditioned to behave in a certain way. We then carry these conditioned belief systems into adulthood and accept them as “normal.” His Four Agreements prove that it is possible to break free from societal conditioning and make new rules that best serve our highest self.

3. As A Man Thinketh, James Allen

This book is a self-help classic and short read.

The message inside the book is that what you think, you become. Your thoughts create your reality, so if you want to change your life, you first need to change your thoughts. Thus, the key to mastering your life and becoming a positive and successful person is to be in control of your thoughts.

4. The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, Stephen Covey

This is, by far, one of the most inspiring books I've ever read.

Inside his book, Stephen Covey puts forth a framework for personal effectiveness and success. He stresses that real change happens from the inside out. Who we are is best understood by looking at the collection of habits that we engage in daily.

In turn, these habits impact our behaviors and decisions in life. The 7 habits Stephen addresses in the book are:

  1. Be proactive
  2. Begin with an end in mind
  3. Put things first
  4. Think win-win
  5. Seek first to understand, then be understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the saw

This book will help you look at the world in a very different way.

5. 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, Jordan Peterson

Jordan is a famous Canadian clinical psychologist and University professor. He is well known for his talks on cultural and political issues. His book, The 12 Rules For Life is a different kind of self-help book.

While fascinating, it's not an easy read. This is why I recommend that you watch some of Jordan's lectures on YouTube so that you understand his position before reading this book.

The core message of his book is that we need to take responsibility for our lives. In his words, “Clean your room.” When you take care of your immediate environment first, you are better able to take on bigger challenges in life. Peterson stresses that when we blame others or the world for our problems, we lose our power. A huge part of taking responsibility means carrying our burdens while finding meaning from the adversities that we face.

6. Psycho-Cybernetics: A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life, Maxwell Maltz

This book teaches you about the power of visualization and the subconscious mind.

So much of your reality can be manifested based on what you visualize. Inside his book, he talks about how we all have a fixed self-image of how we perceive ourselves. Nothing in your life will change until you change your self-image. When you visualize yourself as having the self-image that you desire most, your external reality will follow suit. In turn, you will be able to attract more happiness and success in your life.

7. How to Win Friends and Influence People In The Digital Age, Dale Carnegie

The most successful people that I have met are masters at winning friends and influencing people. Persuasion is an important skill that will help you influence others to buy into your ideas and inevitably achieve your goals. This book teaches you basic communication and social skills for the goal of influencing people.

Carnegie talks about the fundamental techniques for handling people, six ways to make people like you, how to win people with your way of thinking, and how to become a leader in your personal and professional life.

8. Way of The Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives, Dan Millman

This book is based on a true story about Dan Millman, who is a popular, good looking champion athlete. He has everything that you would imagine a young person would want. However, in the book he comes to realize that he's not happy with himself. He meets a man, whom he calls Socrates, who is an old warrior. This man teaches Dan how to be more present and live as a peaceful warrior. The changes that he makes to his internal world end up changing his external world as well.

This book has a lot of valuable wisdom in it about how you can best overcome adversities in life.

9. The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream, Paulo Coelho

If you're lost in life and are looking for your purpose, this is a must-read book.

This is a fictional story of a young boy, Santiago, who is on a journey to discover his calling in life. Embedded throughout the story is the theme of following your heart's desires. With each challenge that the young boy faces, he learns a new lesson. Just like in life, if we refuse to give up and instead trust in our ability to achieve anything, the Universe will help us fulfill our dreams.

10. The War Of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles, Steven Pressfield

This book helps you overcome procrastination, fear, and laziness – pretty much anything that is preventing you from taking action in life.

Steven calls this resistance. He stresses that resistance prevents people from doing the things that will get them ahead in life. When you are able to identify the root cause of your resistance, you will feel more empowered to learn how to deal with it and eventually get past it.

Tony Robbins has been my #1 mentor in life.

In my opinion, finding a mentor is one of the most important decisions you can make. It is one of the biggest reasons why I have been able to become a multi-millionaire at such a young age. A mentor can serve as a powerful resource for helping you to take action in specific areas of life. By leveraging the knowledge and wisdom of people who have achieved what it is that you want, you accelerate your results.

According to mentoring expert, Drew Appleby, “Mentors help people determine who they want to become, how they must change in order to become these people, and how they can take advantage of their college or work experiences to bring about these changes.” Before Tony came along, there was a misconception that existed that you must be broken if you want to improve yourself. He made self-development something to be proud of.

He helped to pioneer the entire coaching business and showed that anybody could build a thriving business in that industry. More importantly, he added a different level of credibility to self-development by working with some of the top leaders, celebrities and professional athletes. As a result, his work has reached and inspired millions of people around the world.

To give you an example of how much of an impact Tony has had on my life, I have attended his Unleash The Power Within seminar 6 or 7 times, his Date with Destiny seminar twice, as well as his Business Mastery program and Leadership Academy. The physiological, mental and emotional shifts that I have experienced from these seminars have been profound.

This is a testament to the power of his teachings and presence as an individual.

When I was 17 years old, I was in a very dark place in my life. Many of you already know my story. I hated my life and was constantly trying to escape reality because I felt so insignificant and uncertain. The only place that I felt connected with others was through video games. In this space, I could be whomever I wanted to be. I wasn't criticized and bullied in the ways that I was in my everyday life. It wasn't until I hit rock bottom that I decided that I had to change my life. Thankfully, someone introduced me to Tony Robbins. From that moment onwards, my life changed.

When I hit my rock bottom, my ego was destroyed. I fully surrendered to the moment and was open to trying anything. What I was doing up to that point in my life wasn't working. It seems counterintuitive but hitting rock bottom can actually be the foundation upon which you rebuild your life. Research shows that bottoming out can be a catalyst for personal transformation, and may lead to a new work identity. Every master was once a disaster.

I remember the first time I came across one of Tony Robbins' infomercials. It was so inspirational and content-rich. I couldn't believe how much value and energy I received from one video. It's fair to say that I was hooked. I started reading about countless transformational stories of people who had attended his seminars. Instantly, a whole new world opened up to me that I was never aware of. When I came across Tony's Personal Power CDs, I realized that I could shape myself into whomever I wanted to be.

Tony taught me about the power of beliefs.

He showed me that anything that I put my mind to, I could achieve. Before this point, I didn't believe that I could change or improve myself. I was wrong. Once I found his audio programs, in particular, “The Hour of Power”, I was inspired to create a morning ritual. As many of you know who follow me, this became a game-changer in my life. Every day I would wake up and do the work to reshape my beliefs. Shortly thereafter, I replaced my addiction to video games with self-development books.

It's important to emphasize that my transformation wouldn't have been possible, had I not made a decision that I was ready to venture on a new path. I had to give up who I was to become the person that I wanted to be. Over the years I've gone deeper with his material and have consumed every piece of content that is publically available.

When I was 21 years old, I met Tony's brother-in-law, Scott Humphrey at an event in Vancouver. At the time, he was doing sales for Unleash The Power Within. Back then, I didn't think that I needed to attend seminars or events because I was consuming so much content online. However, Scott told me that experiencing Tony's events, in-person would be a game changer for my personal growth and development.

He proved to be right.

I can honestly say that you integrate knowledge at a much deeper level when you experience it live, versus just reading about something in a book. I ended up signing up for Unleash The Power Within and it blew my mind.

Tony's Unleash The Power Within event focuses on your beliefs and state.

One of the biggest takeaways that I learned from that event was the power of one's state. You can change and be in control of how you feel. There are three factors that Tony teaches about, that influence your state, one of which is your physiology. He got me moving my body in ways that I never had before. Immediately, it changed how I felt. For the first time in my life, I was experiencing feelings of confidence, gratitude, happiness, and love. It felt so good.

When I got back from Unleash The Power Within I was on fire in every area of my life. I became a completely different person. The event had such a powerful effect on me that I signed up again one year later. Why? Well, after the first event, I started making more money, I pursued my dream of having an online business, I created more success in my dating life, and I increased my confidence. If I went back for a second round, who was to say that I wouldn't be able to level up my life even more in each of those areas?

By going through Tony's content again, I received new breakthroughs. Sure enough, my life shifted to a whole new level of awesomeness. A lot of people think that once is enough. This is far from true. The deeper you go with something, the more that it becomes a part of who you are. Repetition is the mother of mastery.

Tony's Date With Destiny event focuses on your values and your relationships.

During that event, he emphasizes that your values determine your decisions in life. For example, if you value security, you will live a very different life from someone that values success or adventure. At the Date with Destiny event, you start to discover the invisible force that is determining the direction of your life. By knowing this, it allows you to start identifying what it is that you want and what has been stopping you from stepping into your power. Your values need to be aligned with what you want so that you can be pulled towards your purpose instead of being pushed by it.

I've learned a lot of lessons from Tony over the years.

One of the most powerful has been having an understanding of the six core human needs. According to Tony, success in life can be found by meeting these six needs that are fundamental to every human being.  We all share the same six needs. However, how we value those needs and in what order we place them, determine the direction that our life will take.

The six needs are as follows:

  • Certainty
  • Variety
  • Significance
  • Love and Connection
  • Growth
  • Contribution

The first four needs are the needs of our personality. Tony says that we find ways to meet these needs in either disempowering or empowering ways. The last two needs – growth and contribution – are the needs of the spirit, which lead to fulfillment in our lives. Tony has helped me learn that everything that we do in life is designed to meet a certain need. More importantly, that people value these six human needs in different ways.

Oftentimes, people will present with a hierarchy of needs. For example, some people's top need is significance. The problem is that when you value significance too much, you make things more about you. The positive of doing this is that it can lead to a lot of success in life. However, the downside of significance is that you are always comparing yourself to someone else. This can create a lot of internal pain and suffering in people because they are constantly searching for more. Significance used to be one of my top priorities in life. However, today, I've replaced my need for significance with the need for love and contribution.

That shift has changed my life.

Now, when I love and give, I don't need to do much in order to get significance. People love me back. It's a beautiful thing.

Tony also taught me that success, without fulfillment, is the ultimate failure. If you are successful but aren't happy, what's the point? Some of the most successful people in this world have achieved their ultimate goals in life and yet they are still unhappy.

Why does this happen? Because they have been hyperfocused on achievement instead of fulfillment. True happiness is created by growing and giving. Wake up every single day and commit to becoming a better version of yourself. However, keep in mind that if your goals only serve yourself your happiness will be fleeting. This is why it's important that you contribute to the lives of others. By mastering the art of fulfillment, you will create a life that is both rich and full.

This is how Tony Robbins made me a multi-millionaire.

It is hard to put into words what a profound impact he has had on my life. The decision to build my brand, Project Life Mastery was largely inspired by Tony's teachings. He paved the way to discovering my purpose in life, and for that reason alone, I am forever grateful to him.

I hope my story has inspired you to find a mentor of your own. If Tony Robbins' work inspires you, I encourage you to attend his events. I promise that you will not be disappointed. Be someone that is open to anything and everything. When you have this mindset, the sky is merely your starting point of what is possible.

Do you want to learn how to master every area of your life? CLICK HERE to join my Life Mastery Accelerator program!

Recently, in my Life Mastery Accelerator program, I received a good question from one of my members, who asked me:

“Since I am continually growing and working on bettering myself, I realize that I have less in common with people that I used to be around much more, such as my siblings, parents, and in-laws. I find that the more that I grow, the less that I can relate to them, because their mindset about money and business is so different than mine. How can I continue on my path, while also keeping good relationships with those that I care about that are in a different place than me?”

I believe that who you are speaks a lot louder than what you say. When I first got into the world of self-development, business, and internet marketing, I had to deal with unsupportive friends and family.

A lot of people made fun of me, told me that I would fail, and that I should just get a regular job. I didn’t try to force my beliefs onto them or influence their thinking.

I knew that I was on the right path, so I sought out like-minded people who had the same goals and dreams as myself. I loved my family and friends from a distance, but I knew that it wasn’t healthy to be around their negative energy every single day.

As my life began to transform, it got the attention of the same people. Sure enough, they started to respect who I was and what I had to say. They were more open to what I was doing, because they saw the results of my efforts. Results never lie.

Eventually, I got my sister and brother into Kindle publishing, and they have since gone on to experience success in the online world. They are more open to self-development because they see how it has worked to change their lives and mine for the better.

Keep in mind that this shift didn’t happen because I forced my lifestyle on them. Rather, I focused my energy on being the best that I could be, and I inspired them to do the same.

I believe that everyone is in your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. It is your job to discover who those people are, and how they are helping you become the people that you desire to be, even if they are your unsupportive friends and family.

You don’t need anyone’s approval to succeed in life. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you believe in yourself and understand that your vision is yours alone. Do not let anyone get in the way of what you want in life, not even your friends or family.

Live your life, keep focusing on your ‘why’, and the world will adjust. This is how to deal with unsupportive friends and family. In the words of Zero Dean, “Not everyone will understand your journey. That's fine. It's not their journey to make sense of. It's yours.”

I want to share with you 5 brutal truths about life no one wants to admit. It’s a lot easier to be ignorant to the realities of life.

However, the more time that we spend pretending that truths aren’t a part of our reality, the more time that we waste not living in alignment with our true selves.

Is ignorance bliss? Absolutely not. The fact of the matter is that if we want to grow and expand, we need to be honest with ourselves. We need to be willing to open our minds, and see the world through a different lens.

These 5 brutal truths about life that no one wants to admit will remind you of what is important and will empower you to take control of your life.

Here are 5 truths about life no one wants to admit:

1. You can’t make everyone happy

This is a battle that you will never win. No matter how hard that you try, there are people out there that you just can’t make happy. The sooner that you can accept this, the freer that you will be.

You need to accept the fact that most people just don't desire to be happy because they are attached to their current state of living. They don't want to give up their stories, excuses, and limitations of why they CAN be happy. According to research, thinking pessimistically is a staple in the depressed person’s cognitive structure.

Not only can you not make everyone happy, but not everyone is going to like you. There is always going to be someone that will criticize and judge you, based on how you look, how you sound, and how you live your life.

The most successful people throughout history have critics. I’m not for everyone, and that’s OK. The sooner that you accept this fact, the sooner you will not be affected by negative people. All that really matters in life is what you think about YOU.

2. You will never be perfect

No matter how hard you try, you will never be perfect. So many of us hold ourselves to such a high standard, that it ends up creating a lot of suffering.

You need to recognize that it’s OK to make mistakes in life. Everyone has bad days. The earlier that you can embrace that you aren’t perfect, the happier that you will be.

A lot of people are held back in their lives because they become paralyzed by the fear that they will fail at the very things that they want to accomplish. As a result, they never take action.

If you consider yourself to be a perfectionist, it is critical that you break the loop and shift your mindset. It can take away from your most important asset, which is time, leaving you feeling mentally exhausted.

Instead of focusing on perfectionism, go for ‘good enough.’ Do the best that you can with the tools that you have. If you wait for conditions to be perfect before you start anything, you will never start.

3. Nothing in the external world makes you happy

Material possessions will never make you happy in life. All that they will do is provide you with short-term pleasure and gratification. Researchers have a term for it – it’s called, “retail therapy.”

Happiness is an inside job; it is something that we create each moment of our lives. You could be happy right now, simply by focusing on what you are grateful for.

This is why I believe in the power of morning rituals. Spend time every morning focusing on the things that nourish your mind, body, and soul.

4. One day, you will die

A lot of people are afraid of the idea of death, but what if it wasn’t as scary as you think? It all comes down to your beliefs.

Rather than fear it, I think that death is empowering. I don’t fear it because my belief is that our spirit carries on after we leave our physical body.

We are on this planet for a limited amount of time. It's a sobering fact, but it’s true. We live our lives pretending that the end is never going to come. When you embrace the concept of death, it empowers you to cherish life even more.

This is best reflected in one of my favorite quotes by Michael Landon Jr. that reads, “Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.”

Research has indicated that the East Asian yin and yang philosophy of death – where life can’t exist without death – allows individuals to use death as a reminder to enjoy life.

The reality is that we will all meet the same fate as one another, so while we are on this earth we need to seize every moment and live it to the fullest. In the words of Giovanni Falcone, “He who doesn’t fear death only dies once.”

5. Time is the most valuable asset

Time is the most valuable asset that you have. Second by second, you are given the opportunity to become the person that you desire to be. How do you use your time?

Spend your time doing things that bring meaning to your life and that make you come alive inside. The moment that I realized how important this was, I stopped wasting time on things that didn’t matter. Every day I focus on making sure that everything that I do has a purpose behind it.

The reality is that time is depreciating. We can't get more of it, which is why we need to spend it wisely. Don't spend ANY time doing anything that isn't bringing you closer towards the person that you desire to be.

I hope these 5 brutal truths about life no one wants to admit have opened your eyes and offered a different perspective. Don’t let these truths hold you back. Rather, let them empower you to take action and create your reality, on your terms.

Do THIS every 90 days, then watch your life and business change. I would like to share a powerful self-improvement ritual that will ensure that your business consistently grows every year.

I am a big believer that, at the beginning of every year, you need to set goals for yourself and check in to ensure that you are making progress.

The ritual that I am going to share with you involves more than just setting goals. It’s about taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture of your business and your life.

If you want to achieve success, you need to assess the direction of your business and your life, in order to ensure that you are gaining ‘altitude’, as Eben Pagan says.

Are you ready to learn about a game-changing ritual for your business and your life? Do THIS every 90 days, then watch your life and business change.

Every 90 days I schedule a meeting with my team, and I create a specific format for it. If it’s only you in the meeting, schedule it in the same way.

Here is the meeting format that I recommend you follow. Do THIS every 90 days, then watch your life and business change:

1. Review The Vision For Your Business

A clear vision gives a business and a team a sense of direction and inspiration. In my business, I make an effort to ensure that everyone on my team is in alignment with my vision, and that we discuss what that vision is on a regular basis.

Not only that, but if the vision changes in any way, we talk about the ways in which we will need to adapt our business processes in order to ensure that we are constantly growing and expanding.

Keep in mind that it’s important that you continually check in with people to ensure that they are still on board with your vision.

2. Review The Values For Your Business And Your Life

Values are critically important for your business. Not only that, but you want to make sure that there is alignment between the values that you adhere to in your life and the ones that you promote in your business.

What does your business stand for? If you have a team, you need to communicate to them which values are most important to you.

3. Give And Receive Feedback

Feedback is a great way to develop a sense of awareness about where we can improve, so that we are consistently making progress. A lot of people forget this step in their business because they don’t create a ritual to assess themselves and their team.

There are three people on my leadership team, including myself. These are people that I trust and whose opinions I value. Like any relationship, disagreements can come up within a team, and if they aren’t expressed openly it can cause resentment amongst team members.

Each person in the team shares what he or she feels they believe that they are good at, and what they can improve. I then reflect upon what I believe that I need to improve upon, and then I allow the other members of my team to do the same.

My job is to shut up, listen, and take notes. I want my team to be honest with me. The goal is to help each other grow and improve. This is a great trust-building team exercise.

4. Analyze Your Business

As a group, my team and I then brainstorm the areas where we feel that our business has done well. We celebrate and acknowledge our accomplishments over the last 90 days, and the areas where we think we can make improvements.

We also talk about any ideas or suggestions that the team or myself may have for moving forward into the next quarter.

5. Set Goals & Actions for Next 90 Days

Things change throughout the year, so you need to be flexible. In my team, we reassess the goals that we had during the previous quarter, and then for the next quarter we decide what we want to focus on.

I always try to make sure that my team and I have goals in multiple parts of our business, and that each individual has a goal that they are moving towards.

When everyone has a goal, it allows him or her to brainstorm creative ways that they can achieve it. I also make sure that there is always a reward for achieving a goal and make sure that the goal is S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely).

6. Inspire Personal Growth and Development

Every quarter I want to make sure that my team is learning and growing, whether that’s in the form of reading books, attending seminars, taking part in courses, etc.

These are things that I support my team with because I want to invest in them, like I invest in myself. By giving the people on my team the opportunity to develop new skills, that in turn supports the growth of my business as well.

My team then shares their ideas with the group, and then for the next quarter we determine how we are going to commit to learning. We make sure that everyone on my team has goals that they are moving towards.

I highly recommend this ritual. If you want to succeed in business, you need to work on it, not in it. Take it seriously and commit to mastery.

You need to be constantly checking-in, assessing, evaluating where you are at, and where you want to go. This is what the most successful companies in the world do.

Act as if you are bigger than you are. Do THIS every 90 days, then watch your life and business change.

Are you ready to take your life and your business to the next level? In the words of Frank Ocean, “Work hard in silence. Let your success be the noise.”
