This is my anxiety story.

When I was in high school, my anxiety was so crippling that I would skip school. I felt anxious being around anyone, to the point that I couldn't even speak. It was so bad that I would rather fail my classes than stand up in front of a group of students and do a presentation.

I was anxious about anything and everything. After a lot of inner work, I was able to overcome my anxiety, with no medication. Through trial and error, I found 5  strategies that work best for me.

Don't get me wrong… I still get anxious now and then. However, I am better able to stop anxiety dead in its tracks. The reason why a lot of people struggle to overcome anxiety is that they don't heal the root cause of their anxiety.

Instead, they focus on their physical symptoms without addressing the psychological issue. When I used to feel anxious, I would look for ways to escape or avoid negative emotions. In short, I didn't want to feel.

Instead, I numbed my pain through video games. Researchers have found that using video games as a coping mechanism for anxiety predicts symptoms of gaming disorder. I received short-term relief from my anxiety when I played video games. However, it created a myriad of problems in my life, long-term.

It wasn't until I learned how to effectively feel and cope with painful emotions that I was able to heal my anxiety from the inside out. I want to help you do the same. Let's dive into 5 ways that I am able to overcome anxiety.

1. Meditation and breathwork

Anxiety is only experienced when your mind is focused on the future. The fear of what could happen keeps you removed from the present moment. It doesn't feel like it, but anxiety is designed to protect you from a danger that may occur in the future.

If you have experienced pain or trauma in your past, it's natural to worry that you may experience it again, which will cause you to feel fear in the present and imagine the worst-case scenarios.

Most often, the things that we fear never come to fruition, even though we spend countless hours feeling anxious about them. Meditation takes you away from the future and brings you back to the present moment.

The purpose of meditation isn't to try and stop your thoughts altogether. Rather, it's to become an observer of them. Every time that you notice your mind getting the best of you, bring yourself back to your breath.

The goal of meditation is to train your mind to refocus and calm itself. Give yourself the gift of silence and inward reflection each day, even if it's just 10 minutes.

I like to use guided meditation apps to meditate. Two of my favorites are Calm and Headspace. Your mind is a muscle. The more that you meditate, the less anxiety you will have.

Breathwork is an active form of meditation for releasing anxiety. Think of your mind as if it were a kite and your breath was like the wind. Taking deep diaphragmatic breathing (wind) helps to calm the mind which brings you back to the here and now.

When you engage in deep and rhythmic breathing, you activate the vagus nerve, turn on your parasympathetic nervous system, and pump the brakes on anxiety. There are two different breathwork techniques that I would recommend.

Box Breathing:

This is a powerful technique for bringing the breath back to its regular rhythm. You breathe in through your nose and inhale for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, and then exhale for 5 seconds. When you exhale, pause and hold your breath for 5 seconds. I recommend repeating steps 1 through 3, three to seven times.

Wim Hof Breathing:

Wim Hof is known as The IceMan. He has broken Guinness World Records for withstanding extreme temperatures and holding his breath for long periods of time. He created a powerful breathing practice that involves taking 30 deep breaths, where you inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth.

After those 30 breath cycles, you hold your breath for 1 minute and then take another deep breath in and hold that for 15 seconds. I like to repeat that process twice. This is one of my favorite ways to relieve anxiety and put myself in an optimal state.

2. Move Your Body

Moving your body is another great way to relieve anxiety. Emotion is energy in motion. When you change your physiology, you change how you feel. Most people feel their anxiety when their breathing is shallow.

The best way to counteract this uncomfortable physical sensation is through radical movement. I like to put on music and dance each morning. Instantly, I feel amazing.

Your body and your mind are connected. Whatever feels stuck or stagnant in the body can be released through movement.

3. Heal Your Pain

Oftentimes, people have anxiety in adulthood because they have yet to heal their unresolved trauma. Early evidence of cellular memory shows that when we experience trauma, our brain and body’s cells hold an imprint of the traumatic event.

When a child experiences something traumatic, it is common for them to detach from their emotions as a way of coping with their pain. The anticipation of future trauma can manifest itself as anxiety because the mind and body are in a constant state of fight or flight.

Yes, trauma can change the brain, but so can healing. Even though the pain inflicted on us was not our fault, I believe that healing that pain is our own responsibility. There are many ways that you can heal trauma.

Working with a licensed therapist who specializes in trauma recovery and abuse is a great way to heal emotional wounds and turn your pain into power.

Another option is doing psychedelics or plant medicine like Ayahuasca to heal trauma. I recently had a life-changing Ayahuasca experience at the Soltara Center in Costa Rica that allowed me to heal my past trauma on a much deeper level. Only you can decide which healing modality works best for you.

4. Surrender and Let Go of Control

Anxiety comes from trying to control things in your life. Control is an illusion. We don't have full control over anything. We have influence at best. Life is unpredictable. You may have a plan for how you want your life to look, but life doesn't always like your plans.

It will hit you with twists and turns that will force you to change course and go down paths you never thought you'd take. People get into trouble when they resist the redirection.

The key to overcoming anxiety is learning to release the need for control. Whatever you resist, persists. When you are able to surrender to what is and trust that everything that is happening in your life has a purpose, you set yourself free.

The most painful events of my life have shaped me into the person I am today. If I hadn't gone through the worst days of my life, I would have never started investing in my personal growth, which inevitably led to me creating my dream life.

When painful things happen in our lives, it's easy to instantly judge the events as “bad”. However, when you adopt the mindset that everything is happening for you, you are no longer a victim of your circumstances.

In turn, you are better able to bounce forward from adversity and recognize an experience, either good or bad, for what it is – an opportunity to grow and become more.

If you want to learn more about what it means to surrender, I encourage you to read Michael Alan Singer's books, The Surrender Experiment and The Untethered Soul. If you want to do some deeper inner work on this subject, Michael has a great online course that I recommend called Living From A Place of Surrender.

5. Dopamine Detox

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in our brain that gets released whenever there is an anticipation of a reward. In fact, marketers of different companies are aware of this. They get you addicted to their products by stimulating your dopamine levels.

Dopamine is healthy and natural. It's what gives us motivation. However, the problem is that we live in a world that is constantly overstimulating our dopamine levels. Whenever you have a spike in dopamine, there will always be a crash.

This manifests itself as a dopamine hangover. It can take almost two weeks for your brain to normalize after you've experienced a dopamine spike. When you come down from a dopamine spike, your dopamine levels are low. This can negatively impact your mood and create long-term mental health challenges.

The solution to all of this is doing a dopamine detox. Cutting out and/or eliminating whatever is stimulating your dopamine is key. This is what allows your brain to reset itself so that anxiety and depression dissipate.

This may mean spending 24 hours or more without technology. I use a screen time blocker on my phone and computer. This allows me to limit how much time I use certain apps. For example, I give myself 30 minutes max scrolling on Facebook and Instagram.

Keep in mind that you will experience withdrawal symptoms when you're detoxing from dopamine. You'll feel worse before you feel better. As you are resetting your biochemistry, it's helpful to create an empowering morning ritual.

A morning ritual will help you stay energized, focused, and motivated.

For the last 15 years of my life, I've been studying the rituals of the most successful people in the world. I've compiled these rituals into a book that I wrote called 67 Morning Ritual Habits For The Body, Mind, and Spirit so that you can benefit from them. A lot of these rituals will help relieve your anxiety so that you can take back control of your life.

If you want to reprogram your mind and take your life to the next level, I've got a 7-day Morning Ritual Mastery program that shows you how you can model the most successful morning rituals of the most successful people in the world. The program consists of daily video lessons, downloadable MP3 audios, and worksheets.

These are 5 ways to overcome anxiety.

You don't have to live with anxiety forever. Do the inner work to get to the root cause of your anxiety and trust that you have the power to heal yourself. There is life on the other side of anxiety and it's waiting for you with open arms.

A dopamine detox can change your life.

In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter. It affects many aspects of your behavior, some of which include learning, motivation, and mood. Your brain is addicted to dopamine, and it will try to stimulate the repetition of the behavior that produced the dopamine hit in the first place.

The challenge with this is, once you get what it is that you desire, dopamine turns off. As a result, you end up not feeling as satisfied as you thought you would. In fact, you may feel empty. In turn, you end up craving more and more. This leads to a delusionary cycle whereby you constantly find yourself chasing happiness. This is referred to as “the molecule of more” because dopamine fuels your desire.

Have you ever desired someone in your life? Maybe you met a man or a woman and you obsessed over them so much, to the point that you felt as if you were falling in love. When you have an experience like this, your dopamine levels in your brain skyrocket.

Let me give you an example of how dopamine plays out in the context of a relationship. In the beginning stages of dating someone, it can feel like you're high on love. Can you relate? Everything feels so good, otherwise referred to as the honeymoon phase. During the heart-pounding excitement of new love, your brain releases a lot of phenylethylamines (PEA) which creates that punch drunk in love kind of feeling.

Unfortunately, the effects of PEA wear off with time and infatuation tends to fade within 12-18 months. When this happens, a lot of relationships end because the excitement is gone. In short, people get too complacent with one another.

There are a lot of behavioral patterns that people indulge in that are fueled by dopamine.

A simple and powerful example is sugar addiction. Dopamine creates a craving for sugar. When you crave something sweet, you may envision what the sugar will taste like when it hits your mouth. Once you taste the first bite, you may notice that the second bite isn't as satisfying as you thought it would be.

People end up repeating this cycle which creates an addiction to sugar and binge eating. This is the direct result of dopamine overstimulation. Why is this a problem? Anything in moderation is OK. I'm not anti-anything. However, the problem arises when those things become addictive to the point that you overstimulate your dopamine levels.

When you do this, your baseline level of happiness and joy goes up. At this point, you need more of those dopamine hits in order to feel pleasure. Not surprisingly, it becomes even harder to experience a sense of aliveness. The result is feelings of depression, anxiety, or an overall lack of energy or motivation.

Here's where things can get messy. When you stop engaging in addictive behaviors all at once, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. This is a dangerous way to detox your system. This is when it's easy to fall back into destructive patterns of behavior that give you instant gratification.

It becomes the only way that you are able to experience happiness. People use dopamine hits as a way to mask negative emotions that they don't want to feel. You can only distract yourself for so long before those emotions rise to the surface and start affecting every area of your life.

The solution to all of this is to do a dopamine detox.

The best way to reset your mind is to cultivate “here and now” transmitters. These include serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, and GABA. These neurotransmitters allow you to enjoy the present moment, experience connection and be at peace with yourself. They give you lasting fulfillment and joy.

You cultivate these “here and now” neurotransmitters by slowly starting to remove behaviors that are causing issues in your life. Pick one thing that you are addicted to, whether that's video games, pornography, social media, coffee, or sugar. Give your mind a rest and allow your baseline to return to a normal level.

Meditation is a powerful way to increase your dopamine levels naturally and reset your brain. It's also been found to rebuild your prefrontal cortex, which is the part of your brain that helps with self-control and willpower. If you have an overactive mind, meditation will change your life in that it will bring you back to the present moment, which is all that you have.

This is how to reset your mind and take back control of your life.

I encourage you to do some research on what a dopamine detox involves and learn how other's lives have changed as a result of doing it. If you're struggling, don't give up hope. You deserve to feel good and live a happy and fulfilling life.

Are you ready to do a dopamine detox? Your brain will thank you for it.

I want you to master your health and energy because I know that anything that you want to create in life will require that you do so.

You need to attack everything in life with energy, whether that's building a business, crushing your goals, or creating a great relationship. There is no such thing as perfect health. We all falter from time to time. However, we can create healthy habits that ensure that we function at an optimal level of wellness every single day.

I believe that mastery is the highest form of intelligence. It is what sets successful people apart from everyone else. When you commit to it, anything is possible. Where people get stuck, is that they fail to realize that mastery is a process. If you force it, you will only be left feeling like a failure.

The biggest challenge to mastering our health and energy is our minds. If we perceive ourselves as powerless to change, then we won't. Be kind to yourself. Someone once said, “You're not going to master the rest of your life in one day. Just relax. Master the day. Then just keep doing that every day.”

Are you ready to learn 3 reasons why you MUST master your health and energy?

A lot of people don't understand why you MUST master your health and energy.

There is a stigma that exists that being healthy has to be hard. This is far from true! The challenge that a lot of people face is learning how to break bad habits. Science shows us that our taste buds have been genetically engineered to crave high-calorie, high-fat foods. This isn't an excuse, but it doesn't provide some validation as to why our bodies crave bad stuff.

Sit back and ask yourself, “Am I living a healthy life?” If your answer is no, then it's time to do something different. Until we are willing to accept our reality, it can be hard to change it. Our health is so important. However, a lot of people tend to not think about it until something really bad happens. This reactive mode of behavior doesn't serve anybody.

If you only live for short-term gratification but don't think about the long-term effects of how you are treating your body, it will catch up with you. Chuck Pagano said it best – “If you don't have your health, you don't have anything.”

Here are 3 reasons why you MUST master your health and energy.

1. To Avoid Disease And Illness

Unfortunately, a lot of people live a lifestyle that will eventually lead to a disease or illness. A U.S. National Health and Nutrition Survey found that 97.3 percent of American adults get a failing grade on healthy lifestyle habits. This research shows that preventing deaths through promoting healthy eating habits is of utmost importance in today's world.

This is why my health is my top priority. I'm all about engaging in preventative measures because getting sick is not an option. If I cant work for 5 days, I end up losing a lot of money. It's as simple as that. Whenever I engage in healthy habits I'm always thinking about my mission, vision, and values for my business and my life.

When it comes to putting food into your body, always choose a healthy option. This means getting a well-balanced diet and cutting out anything that is toxic to your body. You are the only person that controls what goes into your body, so choose wisely. In the words of Bob Wright, the Founder of American Anti-Cancer Institute,  “No doctor has ever healed anyone of anything in the history of the world. The human immune system heals and that’s the only thing that heals.”

2. To Achieve Your Goals

If you want to achieve your goals in life, then you have to program yourself to be an energy-generating machine. The most successful people in the world all have one thing in common – an insane amount of energy. It's fair to say that energy is everything. It starts and ends with you.

The reason why a lot of people do not achieve their goals is that they lack the drive to make them happen. More often than not, lack of drive comes from lack of energy. Have you ever tried showing up for anything or anyone when you don't' have energy?

When we don't take care of our health, every day can feel like a grind, which can negatively affect our mental and emotional state. In this place, overcoming a setback of any kind can be challenging.

I know that the vision that I have for my life is not going to happen if I don't have an optimal level of energy. In their book, What's Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done, authors Matthew and John Piper say that “Being able to do the things that energize you is not the luxury you get to have once you’ve been successful. Rather, it’s the way to become successful. For you will work harder, longer, and with more diligence at things you love to do over things you dislike to do.” Are you energized to crush your goals?

3. To Thrive Through Life, Not Just Survive

Do you want to survive life? Or thrive through life? We aren't meant to merely exist. Life is meant to be lived, fully and wholeheartedly. If you don't feel like you are functioning at your optimal level of health, there is no better time than today to make a change.

You know that you are ready to thrive when you have the desire to let go of some unhealthy habit that is longer serving your highest self. Just reading this blog post shows that you want to change something about your life!

Take small steps every day to start your journey towards thriving, and remember to treat yourself with the kindness and self-compassion along the way. You don't have to trudge your way through life. You can experience an optimal level of health and energy, to the point at which you feel unstoppable and high on life. Nothing tastes as good as healthy and fit feels.

In the words of Maya Angelou – “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

Are you ready to master your health and energy?

It's not enough to want it. None of the above strategies will work if you don't start applying them every single day.
