On a scale from 1-10, how confident are you?

The quality of your thoughts determines how you feel about yourself. According to the National Science Foundation, an average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts. Crazy, right? If confidence doesn't come naturally to you, its time to reflect upon how you speak to yourself on a daily basis.

I'm not saying that it's easy to wake up every morning feeling unstoppable, but it is possible. If you commit to flexing your self-belief muscle, you can feel confident every day. However, keep in mind that nobody is born confident. Confidence is something that you condition and create with practice.

The moment that you start doubting yourself is the moment that you have to change your state. One of the best ways to take back control of your day and your life is to create an empowering morning ritual. Every successful person in the world has one. Taking time every single morning to nourish your mind, body and soul is an act of radical self-love. If you don't make yourself a priority, everything else in your life will suffer.

By proactively putting yourself in a powerful state from the get-go, you set yourself up to win. You'll be in a better frame of mind to handle any challenges that you encounter throughout the day. The go-to confidence ritual that I practice every day is reciting incantations.

These are empowering phrases that you verbalize using your entire body. Incantations are about embodying the meaning behind the words. This is how you reprogram your mind and cultivate new and empowering beliefs.

In this proactive state, taking action is effortless.

Challenges become opportunities. Failure becomes feedback. Whatever emotional state that you choose to live in on a consistent basis becomes your default way of being. I used to be a shy and anxious kid. That was a state of being that I conditioned every day by engaging in behaviors that were enabling my shyness.

It's fair to say I had zero confidence or belief in my abilities. I knew that if I wanted to be a more confident person, I needed to practice being confident, even though it felt uncomfortable to do so. Doing hard things builds resilience.

It is what has allowed me to overcome my greatest insecurities in life and build the self-confidence that I have today. If your life feels like it's limited right now, it's only because you're limiting your mind to what is possible. Another effective tool for boosting confidence and training your brain to be unstoppable is to create a daily visualization ritual.

Close your eyes and envision what it would look like and feel like to have unshakeable confidence. Reflect upon a time when you felt really confident. Put yourself back in that place. Imagine all the details. The more you repeat a thought or a feeling, the sooner it becomes a belief, a part of who you are.

The next time you're in a similar situation where you desire to have more confidence, anchor yourself back to that confident experience you once had, and recreate those confident feelings. You'll be amazed at how quickly your emotional state will change.

Are you ready to feel confident every day?

Here's the hard truth – if you don't believe in yourself then nobody is going to believe in you. Believing in yourself doesn't have to be hard. Make it a ritual to show up for yourself every day. Flex your belief muscle on a consistent basis and watch your entire life change before your eyes.

In Steve Jobs' Stay Hungry Stay Foolish commencement speech to the Stanford class of 2005, he said – “For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? ‘ And whenever the answer has been ‘No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

Confidence is the precursor to success.

If you look at the top achievers in the world, the one thing that they share in common with another is an unwavering belief in themselves. In turn, that self-belief translates to every area of their lives. This doesn't mean that they don't fail. It means when they do fail, they quickly pick themselves back up and keep going.

They are masters of transforming their challenges into opportunities for growth. When they can't find a way, they make a way. However, keep in mind that nobody is born with unstoppable confidence. It is something that you learn to build up through discipline and repetitive practice.

This doesn't mean that you won't still have moments where you doubt yourself or feel lost. All that matters is that you don't drown in your limiting beliefs. Let's talk about 4 ways that you can build self-esteem and confidence and transform your self-doubt into a powerful plan of action.

1. Question your beliefs

How often do you step back and question why you think the way you do? Most of what people believe is inherited or passed down from their parents. As a result, people end up making decisions in adulthood that match those inherited belief systems. If those beliefs are limiting, so too will be their self-esteem and confidence.

This is why it's important to acknowledge your core beliefs and examine which ones might be inaccurate and unproductive. The next time that you have a disempowering thought, ask yourself, “Where does this belief originate from? Is it serving me? If so, how?” If you find that this belief is holding you back, change the belief.

2. Engage in positive self-talk

If you don't talk to yourself like you would to someone you love, it's time to shift your internal narrative.  Your thoughts shape and create your reality. If you're constantly talking poorly about yourself and using disempowering language, that is what you will attract more of into your life.

If you struggle with low self-esteem, make it a priority to recite positive affirmations every day. Don't just say affirmations out loud. Rather, use your body and voice to embody the meaning behind the words. You could go one step further and try modeling and adopting the physiology of people who are more successful than yourself.

Explore how it feels to walk and talk with confidence. Fake it until you feel it. The more that you repeat something with emotional intensity, the higher the likelihood that you will take this on as an empowering belief.

3. Find your purpose

There is a strong correlation between a lack of purpose and low self-esteem. Think about it… if you feel lost and don't have a direction for your life, it is going to be hard to do much of anything. You won't feel motivated or inspired. Laziness will become your default mode of being. This is no way to live.

Conversely, when you're “in purpose” – that is, engaged with and working towards your purpose – life becomes easier, less complicated and less stressful. You are on this earth for a reason. You matter and you have gifts to share with the world. Once you find your ‘WHY', your self-esteem and confidence will soar because you will be living in alignment with your vision.

4. Take action

If you merely consume knowledge but don't do anything with it, you're selling yourself short. The only thing that truly matters is what you do with the knowledge that you learn. You're never going to be ready to do anything. Your mind will try to convince you of all the reasons why you shouldn't take action.

Don't listen to this voice. Sometimes you've just got to dive into life, take a risk, and trust that, no matter what happens, you will be okay. Once you do the thing you thought you couldn't do, it will give you the self-esteem boost that you need to continue taking action in other areas of your life.

This is how to build self-esteem and confidence.

Whatever you want to achieve in life will require that you possess high levels of self-esteem and confidence. When you choose to believe in yourself, possibilities are endless. Public speaking is a learnable skill.

I used to struggle with public speaking. When I was in high school I was very shy. I had a very hard time making friends so I would isolate myself and play video games all day. Whenever I had to give a presentation in front of my class I would skip and take the fail if it meant that I wouldn't have to speak. 

Every time that I spoke to someone I would experience debilitating anxiety. Luckily, the pain that I associated with public speaking became a gift. It gave me the motivation to change my life. I wouldn’t be the successful speaker who I am today if I hadn’t worked through my fear of public speaking.

Today, I speak at small and large events, some of which have included up to 2000 people. I also lead masterminds, host workshops, and have been able to impact millions of people around the world through my YouTube channel. I’m not the best speaker in the world, but I’ve improved a lot and I want the same for you.

4 Tips For Becoming A Confident Public Speaker

It is possible to develop your public speaking skills to the point where you become a master communicator. I know it feels scary and hard, but like anything, it will get easier with time. It starts and ends with committing to developing yourself. Below are 4 tips for how you can become a confident public speaker.

1. Know your “why” for speaking

When it comes to public speaking, 80% of communication is your why for speaking, and only 20% is the how. Most people focus on the 20%. They focus too much on the words that they speak. If you watch my YouTube videos, you will notice that my words aren't always smooth. I still make mistakes and stumble from time to time.

However, I’m not concerned because I focus my energy on the 80%. This is the emotion associated with what I am speaking about. When you talk about something important to you, it becomes so much easier to articulate the message with ease. A speech isn’t the thing that changes people's lives.

Rather, it’s your ability to influence people, to the point that you inspire them to take action.  When I communicate, I want you to feel the message behind my words. My goal is for you to always walk away from my content feeling motivated and empowered. 

2. Know your audience

Once you know your why for speaking, you want to ask yourself, “Who am I communicating with?” You want to know who your audience is and what their needs are. The more that you care about your audience, the more effective that you will be in serving them.

All too often, people make a speech about themselves. When you self-obsess, your mental chatter takes away from your message. The purpose of speaking is to influence your audience. This is what allows you to get out of your head and drop into your heart. 

3. Put yourself into a resourceful state

Before you speak, you want to be at a level 10, meaning that you want to be at your best. I like to listen to empowering music to get myself into a resourceful state. It does a great job of preventing my mind from wandering.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

The more that you practice public speaking, the better that you will get. The best thing that you can do is have an audience that you can practice in front of. If you are committed to developing your public speaking skills, I recommend that you join Toastmasters. I joined this organization when I was 18 years old.

Groups like this will give you the feedback and support that you need in order to become a better public speaker. Another thing to consider is taking improv or acting classes. It's challenging but it will force you to get out of your comfort zone.

Lastly, I encourage you to film yourself speaking so that you can observe your verbal and non-verbal language. Doing so will help improve your confidence, your speaking skills, and your comfort with filming future videos. The end goal is self-improvement, and you will always win when you're focused on that.

Confidence isn't something that you are born with.

Rather, it is a trait that is developed through practice. More importantly, you can build your confidence at any age. New research into neural plasticity reveals that we can literally rewire our brains in ways that affect our thoughts and behavior at any age. The most successful people in this world have unshakeable confidence because they spent years of their lives building it. I know this to be true because the person that I am today is drastically different from who I used to be.

If you are lacking in confidence, I totally understand how you feel. However, you need to understand that the only thing that is holding you back from being a confident person is the beliefs that you hold about yourself. When I was younger, I was an extremely shy and anxious kid. It's fair to say that confidence wasn't a part of my vocabulary. Despite this reality, I still had a burning desire to succeed in life. The problem was that I didn't believe that I could succeed.

I knew that if I didn't develop confidence, I wouldn't get far. When I was 17 years old, I developed an empowering morning ritual. It changed my life forever. Ever since then, I have committed to engaging in healthy habits on a daily basis that help to boost my confidence levels. Doing so has served my life tremendously. I continue to practice my morning ritual to this day.

How would your life be different if you had more confidence? If you want to create your own empowering morning ritual, I encourage you to join my Morning Ritual Mastery program. In my eyes, confidence is a precursor for success. You can't take action in life without mastering this skill.

Here are some examples of why this is true.

  • Are you attracted to someone? If so, you will eventually have to approach him or her and spark a conversation.
  • Do you have a desire to make more money at work? If so, you have to be willing to ask for a raise.
  • Are you committed to building your brand? If so, you have to be willing to create content and put yourself out there.
  • Do you dream of being a public speaker? If so, you have to get over the fear of speaking in front of people.

A study at Carnegie Mellon University shows that people are more likely to “buy advice” from a more confident seller. The crazy part is that it didn’t even matter if that seller had been wrong in the past. I think you get my drift. When you are confident, the world becomes your oyster.

You may know that confidence is good for you. However, the question still remains, “How do you develop confidence if you have nothing to be confident about?” In order to counteract this disempowering mindset, you need to condition your mindset with positive and uplifting thoughts. You may not realize it yet, but you are 100% in control of your confidence. More importantly, you can access this empowering state at any given moment of the day.

I want to share with you a daily confident ritual that I practice.

It will give you a reference from which you can awaken your inner power. This ritual has directly and dramatically impacted my confidence in every area of my life. Let's try this exercise together. If you are sitting and reading this, I encourage you to please stand up.

Shake out your body, take a big deep breath in and exhale. I want you to stand in a way that you would if you already possessed unstoppable confidence. Remember a time when you were confident, or act as if you are confident in this moment. Change your physiology by putting your shoulders up and back, with your head held high. Notice how that makes you feel.

While standing, begin to pay attention to what you do with your arms. Are they crossed or open? Notice how you feel when your chest is puffed out. Pay attention to your breath. Is it shallow or deep? Think about how you would move throughout space and what gestures you would emulate. Would you be smiling and nodding, or mimicking other people's gestures?

When it comes to your facial expressions, what emotions would you express? Put that expression on your face right now. Maybe it's a big smile. Feel into that. Try taking up more space with your body. How would you communicate with people if you were confident? Would you have power in your voice and project it louder? Don't be afraid to take up space and own the room. Think about the language that you would use, like “YES! I can accomplish whatever it is that I want in this world” or “I am amazing!” or “I am powerful beyond measure!”

Recite positive affirmations like these out loud to yourself right now.

Now I want you to imagine what you would look like if you were confident. Don't be afraid to use your imagination and be bold. As Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”

Make a big and bright picture of yourself taking action in life, and see how other people respond to you. Now I want you to bring that picture close to you. Feel that confident energy flow throughout your entire body. Imagine that it is vibrating every single cell of your being. When you do this, make sure that you are breathing deeply and standing strong. Exaggerate these poses and condition them over and over again.

Research by social psychologist, Amy Cuddy reveals that engaging in two minutes of power poses can make you feel and appear more confident. In these poses, your body sends a signal to your brain that you are feeling confident. In turn, the brain produces more testosterone and lowers your cortisol levels. This research proves that practicing confident body language can dramatically boost your self-esteem.

Whatever level you are currently at, now I want you to take it to a level 10. Put on music, dance, or do a fist pump. Whatever it takes! As you feel into this moment, I'm going to help you create an anchor that will allow you to access this emotional state any time you want.

Right now, I want you to clench your right fist and say, “YES!”

Repeat it louder and stronger, over and over again, to the point where you feel all-powerful. Notice what is happening in your body on a physiological level when you do this. The purpose of engaging in this exercise is to associate that “YES” gesture to the act of being confident. Make this your frame of reference for what confidence looks and feels like. When you do the work to change your physiology, you also change your emotional state.

Engaging in this daily confidence ritual has the power to change your entire life. I'm living proof that this works. I never leave my house or create content until I feel like I'm at a level 10 on the confidence scale. I first learned about this exercise from Tony Robbins. He teaches this process, which he refers to as “the emotional triad” at his seminar, Unleash The Power Within.

Tony originally learned about this concept from neurolinguistic programming (NLP), which is a powerful technology for changing one's emotional state. NLP believes that, in order to master your emotions, you first need to master three forces – your physiology, your focus, and your language.

The first component of the triad is physiology. Changing your physiology or your physical body is the fastest way to change how you feel. Emotion is created by motion. Challenge yourself all throughout the day to move with confidence. Put your shoulders back, breathe deeply, and stand tall. At first, it may feel uncomfortable but that's OK. Changing your habits takes time. Just keep practicing and whatever you do, don't give up.

The second component of the triad is focus.

Whatever you focus on, you feel. Always ask yourself, “What would I focus on if I was confident?” Make that image bigger and brighter. When you consciously set your focus on the positive, you condition your mental state to think and act accordingly.

The last component of the triad is language. Certain words produce certain emotions. If you are always saying to yourself, “I can't” or “I'm not good enough”, those phrases will automatically put you into a disempowering state. 

How you use language determines what emotions you feel. This is why it's so important to condition your language. Talk to yourself in the same way that you would talk to your best friend. In the words of Tony himself, “Take control of your consistent emotions and begin to consciously and deliberately reshape your daily experience of life.”

When you know how to be confident, you give yourself permission to thrive.

Unstoppable confidence is yours for the taking. Make it a habit to condition your confidence every single day. Over time, this empowering state of mind will become a part of who you are. As someone once said, “Self-confidence is a superpower. Once you start to believe in yourself, magic starts happening.”
