I have made it my mission to master public speaking.

When I was young I experienced a lot of anxiety around public speaking. I would purposefully hide from the world so that I didn't have to interact with people. A lot of the fears about public speaking stem from our fear of being judged and criticized by others.

Over the years I've done a lot of work to overcome my fear of public speaking. Today, I speak in front of thousands of people and have created a brand that is focused on sharing my message with the world. As a result, I've been able to impact millions of people. I am living proof that the fear of public speaking doesn't have to control your life.

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Roger Love about how to master public speaking. He has over 30 years of vocal coaching experience and has helped thousands of people find their voice, some of whom include Oscar, Screen Actors Guild, and Grammy Award winners.

Now is the time to conquer your public speaking fears once and for all. Let's dive in!

What can people do to be more effective in communicating with emotion?

There are some really simple things. When you listen to music, some songs make you happy, others make you cry, and others make you reminisce about the first time that you fell in love. Music is instinctive. It makes you feel things. I spent a lot of years as a singing coach. I took everything that music could offer and I created a way of putting music into the speaking voice. For example, songs have a melody. They go up sometimes and they go down sometimes.

However, when people speak they often hang onto the same note.

gThey are Mr. or Mrs. monotone. That is the most unemotional sound you can make. Despire this, did you know that about 85% of the speakers in the world speak with one to two notes, max? Melody is important. Not just any melody, but specific melodies.

In a song, when the notes go from lows to highs, it makes you happy and when it goes from highs to lows, it makes you sad. The same thing goes in speaking. Whenever we get to a comma or a period, we are taught to go down. Simple changes in realizing how you can add more melody to your voice can make a world of difference. If you change your speaking voice slightly, everybody will think you are amazing as opposed to thinking that you're boring.

Do you have any tips to help people overcome the fear of public speaking and become a confident speaker?

It's crazy that fear of speaking in public is still the #1 fear in America. The main reason why people are afraid to speak in public is that they don't like the sound of their voice. They are afraid that people are going to judge them as harshly as they judge themselves.

We don't want to be judged because it hurts when someone doesn't like us.

The way to conquer fear is to create a voice that shows people how special and intelligent you are and how much you care. When people hear you, they won't judge you harshly. Rather, they will love listening to you. If you sound more confident, people will perceive you as a confident speaker.

Are there things that people can do to ensure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared to speak at their best?

If I was a running coach and the runner asked me, “What should I do before the race to win it?” I would tell them that they have to stretch a little. I have simple little vocal warmups that you could do in 1-2 minutes that tell your vocal cords what position they should be in so that you can make big and intelligent sounds. This is very similar to stretching.

What are some of the mistakes that people make when it comes to speaking and communicating?

People are afraid of volume. We've associated volume with anger. If you speak loud, people naturally back off because they assume that you are threatening them. However, volume isn't the culprit. Sounds and emotions don't just have one element.

Volume is an element of being mad, but monotone is also an element of being mad.

If I'm loud and I only have one note, I do sound mad. However, if I'm loud and I have a lot of melodies, I sound passionate. If you add more melody to volume, all of a sudden you will sound more full, rich and strong. Volume is great. Use more of it!

Can you share a little bit about the Speaking Pro program that you created?

My Speaking Pro program is the culmination of what I've learned over the last 30 years and more. I've tried to isolate all of the different situations people might be in where they need their voice. The videos in my program teach you all of the things that you need to know about communicating, whether you're a professional speaker or not. Everyone needs to learn how to communicate emotionally and in a way that builds self-confidence.

You can master public speaking.

If I can do it, so can you. It is important to remember that public speaking is a skill. Mastering any skill takes deliberate practice, time, and persistence. If you are committed to the process, I promise that you will become a more confident speaker and communicator.

The world is waiting for your message. Are you ready to start flexing your vocal muscles?

Public speaking is a learnable skill.

I used to struggle with public speaking. When I was in high school I was very shy. I had a very hard time making friends so I would isolate myself and play video games all day. Whenever I had to give a presentation in front of my class I would skip and take the fail if it meant that I wouldn't have to speak.

Every time that I spoke to someone I would experience debilitating anxiety. Luckily, the pain that I associated with public speaking became a gift. It gave me the motivation to change my life. I wouldn’t be the successful speaker who I am today if I hadn’t worked through my fear of public speaking.

Today, I speak at small and large events, some of which have included up to 2000 people. I also lead masterminds, host workshops, and have been able to impact millions of people around the world through my YouTube channel. I’m not the best speaker in the world, but I’ve improved a lot and I want the same for you.

4 Tips For Becoming A Confident Public Speaker

It is possible to develop your public speaking skills to the point where you become a master communicator. I know it feels scary and hard, but like anything, it will get easier with time. It starts and ends with committing to developing yourself. Below are 4 tips for how you can become a confident public speaker.

1. Know your “why” for speaking

When it comes to public speaking, 80% of communication is your why for speaking, and only 20% is the how. Most people focus on the 20%. They focus too much on the words that they speak. If you watch my YouTube videos, you will notice that my words aren't always smooth. I still make mistakes and stumble from time to time.

However, I’m not concerned because I focus my energy on the 80%. This is the emotion associated with what I am speaking about. When you talk about something important to you, it becomes so much easier to articulate the message with ease. A speech isn’t the thing that changes people's lives.

Rather, it’s your ability to influence people, to the point that you inspire them to take action.  When I communicate, I want you to feel the message behind my words. My goal is for you to always walk away from my content feeling motivated and empowered.

2. Know your audience

Once you know your why for speaking, you want to ask yourself, “Who am I communicating with?” You want to know who your audience is and what their needs are. The more that you care about your audience, the more effective that you will be in serving them.

All too often, people make a speech about themselves. When you self-obsess, your mental chatter takes away from your message. The purpose of speaking is to influence your audience. This is what allows you to get out of your head and drop into your heart.

3. Put yourself into a resourceful state

Before you speak, you want to be at a level 10, meaning that you want to be at your best. I like to listen to empowering music to get myself into a resourceful state. It does a great job of preventing my mind from wandering.

When I'm preparing for a big speech, I'll work with Roger Love, who is a celebrity voice coach. He's got an amazing course that I recommend, which is called, The Perfect Voice. If you purchase it, you can save $50 by using my coupon code, “MASTERY” on checkout.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

The more that you practice public speaking, the better that you will get. The best thing that you can do is have an audience that you can practice in front of. If you are committed to developing your public speaking skills, I recommend that you join Toastmasters. I joined this organization when I was 18 years old.

Groups like this will give you the feedback and support that you need in order to become a better public speaker. Another thing to consider is taking improv or acting classes. It's challenging but it will force you to get out of your comfort zone.

Lastly, I encourage you to film yourself speaking so that you can observe your verbal and non-verbal language. Doing so will help improve your confidence, your speaking skills, and your comfort with filming future videos. The end goal is self-improvement, and you will always win when you're focused on that.

These are 4 tips for how you can become a confident public speaker.

You have the power to master the art of public speaking. Your message matters and the world is waiting for it. Are you ready to become a confident public speaker?

Do you have a fear of public speaking? If so, you aren’t alone.

The fear of public speaking, otherwise known as, “glossophobia”, is one of the most common of fears. Research shows that 75% of individuals suffer from speech anxiety.

For someone who suffers from this fear, the idea of getting up in front of a group of people can be terrifying. I can relate, because I used to struggle with extreme shyness and social anxiety for many years. The good news is that I was able to overcome my fear, and so can you.

Are you ready to learn how to overcome fear of public speaking and boost your confidence? In the words of W. Clement Stone, “Thinking will not overcome fear, but action will.”

Your fear of public speaking doesn't have to control your life.

Oftentimes, it's the fear of fear itself that holds us back, more than the act of speaking. In my experience, the best way to overcome fear of any kind is by facing it. Stanford neuroscientist Philippe Goldin, who specializes in anxiety disorders believes that exposure is, hands down, the most successful way to deal with phobias, anxiety disorders, and fears of any sort.

Let's explore 4 ways that you can overcome your fear of public speaking.

1. Take Baby Steps

You don’t have to overcome all of your fear at once. Instead, take baby steps. If you have a fear of public speaking get comfortable with a small group of people first, rather than speaking to a large crowd.

For example, maybe you could attend a Toastmasters event once a week. This is a safe, supportive environment where there is no judgment or rejection. Once you get rewarded and encouraged by your peers, you will build up your confidence over time.

2. Practice Mindfulness

When people experience fear of public speaking, oftentimes there is a host of limiting beliefs that underlie their fear. It’s common to catastrophize and ruminate about the actual experience before it's even happened.

Preparing in advance for a speech is important, but try practicing some mindfulness exercises beforehand, like deep breathing or meditation. Mindfulness trains your brain to stay calm and clear. By taking some long, deep breaths and pausing regularly, you will feel more in control of your speech. There is no better way to calm your nerves and reduce performance anxiety.

3. Visualize Your Success

Research has revealed that mental practices for visualizing your success are almost effective as true physical practice. A great mental rehearsal strategy for minimizing your fear of public speaking is to visualize yourself delivering a successful talk or presentation.

Seeing is believing. Close your eyes and picture yourself moving throughout the room, speaking clearly, and having fun. When you visualize the result that you want, it will boost your confidence, creating the momentum that you need to overcome your fear.

4. Reward Yourself

Any time that you take a risk, give yourself a reward because what gets rewarded, gets repeated. Every time that you give a presentation, do something nice for yourself. This will create a positive mental association between speaking and the feeling of pleasure.

As a result, you will be motivated to speak more and achieve bigger goals related to public speaking. Soon enough, your fear of public speaking will fade away.

Anybody can overcome their fear of public speaking.

Public speaking is a skill. It’s important to remember that great public speakers aren’t born. Rather, most of them have trained themselves to perform at their best, through consistent preparation, persistence, and practice.

In the words of Mark Twain, “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.” The world's greatest speakers still get nervous. Don’t beat yourself up. Just be proactive, feel the fear, and do it anyways! Are you ready to transform your fear into fuel?

I would like to share with you my experience speaking at the Amazing Seller Summit in Las Vegas in front of 1500 entrepreneurs and Amazon sellers.

I had the pleasure of speaking on the topic of, “How to use YouTube in order to promote and sell any product.”

I wasn’t always fond of public speaking. Those of you who follow me know that, when I was younger, I was very shy. The idea of speaking to anyone, let alone thousands of people, gave me extreme social anxiety.

I am a big believer in the power of stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing things that scare you. Through a lot of experience, I have been able to develop the confidence and passion that is required in order to become a captivating speaker.

In the words of Rob Brown, “If you can speak, you can influence. If you can influence, you can change lives.”

After speaking at the Amazing Seller Summit in Las Vegas, I had an opportunity to interview some inspiring entrepreneurs who have had massive success in the online business world.

I spoke with my good friend, Ryan Moran, who is the CEO and Host of Freedom Fast Lane, a podcast that helps high achievers build businesses and then invest the profits.

Ryan has built and sold many successful online businesses. When he was 15 years he worked at a coffee shop, where one of his customers gave him a copy of Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!.

In that book, he learned one thing that changed his life forever – that rich people acquire assets. He started his first business in college and made his first million as an affiliate marketer.

He got to a point in this life where he wanted to build a brand, and affiliate marketing allowed him to acquire the cash flow that he needed in order to do so.

He took the skills that he learned as an affiliate marketer and built a series of successful physical product brands. To this day, he believes that the most predictable path that you can take in order to create a 7-figure business is by building a physical products brand.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Coats, the Founder and Host of the AMPM podcast, which provides Amazon FBA and private label selling tips.

His journey started in finance, however he soon realized that he had a passion to travel and create financial freedom, and knew that he wouldn’t be able to make that dream a reality on the salary that he had.

Manny has been involved in online businesses since 1999 and created the world’s largest and most visited humor site called, TwistedHumor.com. In 2013, he started a mobile game development company, called Mobile Games, and in 2015, he got into the Amazon private label business and launched his AMPM podcast.

Within 9 months of selling on Amazon, he had made over $1 million dollars. He is also the Founder of Helium 10, an Amazon keyword research software tool that helps sellers build a successful Amazon FBA business in order to create the financial freedom that they desire.

Overall, my experience speaking at the Amazing Seller Summit in Las Vegas was a success! I met a lot of inspiring entrepreneurs and celebrated in style with my girlfriend by attending an awesome show called Le Rêve, which I highly recommend you check out the next time you are in Las Vegas.

I cannot express enough how powerful public speaking can be for networking with like-minded people, developing confidence, establishing yourself as an authority figure, and growing your business.

Don’t ever take for granted the power of the spoken word. It has done amazing things for my career and my life, and it can do the same for you. As always, I hope that my story inspires you to overcome your fears, harness the power of your voice, and share your message with the world.

I have some exciting news! Warren Buffett has revealed his best investment advice. Known to be worth $75 billion dollars, he is one of the most successful self-made investors in the world.

Warren is a role model for any entrepreneur, investor, or business person that aspires to achieve financial greatness. Referred to as, “The Oracle of Omaha”, Warren Buffett had an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age. As a young adult, he was always looking for innovative and creative ways to earn money, which is how he made a net worth of $6,000 at the age of 15.

Many of the most successful people in the world attribute their success to sheer determination and commitment to their goals. While this speaks true, Warren Buffett offers a different perspective. Although the end goal of success usually equates to making money and getting rich, it isn’t what matters most in life.

You may be wondering, “How does one man become so successful?” The answer may surprise you. Are you ready to learn how to invest, the ‘Warren Buffett way?’

Warren Buffet believes the single best investment that he ever made was a lifelong commitment and curiosity for learning. In his own words, “Invest in as much of yourself as you can, you are your own biggest asset by far.”

When Warren Buffett was young he was terrified of public speaking. He wanted to master this fear, so he attended a Dale Carnegie public speaking class that ended up changing his entire life. Even to this day, he has his public speaking diploma hanging on his wall in his office.

You never know how one book, course, or seminar can change your entire life. Live with that positive anticipation that there is always something good that will come from having an optimistic mindset.

Chris Munger, the Vice Chairman of the Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Corporation, once said this about his colleague:

“Warren Buffett has become one hell of a better investor since the day I met him, and so have I. If we had been frozen at any given stage, with the knowledge we had, the record would have been much worse than it is, so the game is to keep learning.”

If you want to become the best that you can be, you need to adopt the mindset of a lifelong learner. I attribute most of my success in life to my love of learning. It has brought so much joy to my life, and it has allowed me to grow and evolve my online business at a much greater speed. If you look at my May 2017 Monthly Goals Report, you will see how much I invest in myself.

Who I am today is vastly different from the person that I was many years ago. I was a shy, depressed, insecure teenager who was broke and struggling, BUT I was committed to investing in myself.

If I wanted to master all areas of my life, I knew that I had to stop doing what I had always done. I found mentors, read books, attended seminars, went to workshops, and created networking events, all with the purpose of learning. I realized that what one man can do, another man can do.

Finally, Warren Buffett also believes in the power of investing in an index fund, otherwise known as a type of mutual fund with a portfolio constructed to match or track the components of a market index, such as the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (S&P 500).

From a historical standpoint, the stock market has always gone up, no matter what is going on in the world. The beauty of index funds is that they allow you to own 500 of the biggest companies in the U.S. There is no better way to create a simple plan for building your retirement savings.

How much time and money do you invest in yourself? The reality is that the more you learn, the more you earn. When asked to reflect on Warren’s success, Charlie Munger said, “Warren is one of the best learning machines on this earth. The turtles who outrun the hares are learning machines. If you stop learning in this world, the world rushes right by you.”

If you are already investing in yourself, awesome. If you have yet to start, I hope Warren Buffett’s investment advice has inspired you to do so. It all starts with you.

I would like to share with you how to make stress and anxiety your friend.

There are so many negative associations with the words, ‘stress’ and ‘anxiety’. These emotions are real and can be very debilitating for many people.

I want to offer you a different way of looking at these emotions. What if you could use stress and anxiety to your advantage, and proactively change your life for the better?  I’m here to show you how.

I experience stress and anxiety in my life, but I don’t view them as bad things. Why? I believe that in order to grow and achieve your goals, you have to step outside of your comfort zone.

Watch the video below:

The comfort zone, as defined by Lifehacker, is a “behavioural space where your activities and behaviours fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk” — the operative words here being “stress” and “risk”. We all have a zone of comfort that is safe. We are wired to seek out comfort, which is why it is so hard to break away from it.

When we step outside of our comfort zone that is when we experience the most stress and anxiety. You might be wondering, “Then what is the point? I want to minimize negative emotions, not increase them.” Because in order to be the person that you desire to be, you need to take a risk. Those who are willing to do so will achieve the greatest rewards.

The magic happens when we place ourselves in challenging environments, when we are pushed to achieve our goals. Psychologists that have found that, when we challenge ourselves, we tend to rise to the occasion (Beck, 2012). T. Harv Eker said it best – “Nobody ever died of discomfort, yet living in the name of comfort has killed more ideas, more opportunities, more actions, and more growth than everything else combined. Comfort kills!”

Living uncomfortably is the only way to live. When you are uncomfortable, it makes you grow and stretch yourself. I am willing to purposely experience stress and anxiety. I know that my success depends, in part, on my ability to embrace these emotions with an open heart.

These emotions provide me with opportunities to do more, in my business and in my life. Unfortunately, too many people play it safe on a daily basis, and people wonder why they don’t achieve their goals. You need to place yourself in challenging situations. When you push yourself and embrace the unknown, you conquer your fears.

How would it feel if stress and anxiety were your friend? What would happen if you changed your perception of these stereotypically negative emotions? I always want to create more in my business, and sometimes that makes me nervous. However, I know that it is what I need to do in order to achieve more success.

For example, public speaking still makes me a little anxious, but I do it because it helps me grow as a speaker, it makes a difference in the lives of others, and it fulfills my mission. It’s a win-win.

I was very socially awkward in my early years. People always ask, “Stefan, how did you overcome your shyness and social anxiety?” Simple. I faced it, head-on. Don’t shy away from stress and anxiety. Move through it. Challenges in life are normal. They are blessings in disguise, which exist in order to make us better people.

When you change your perception and view challenges as opportunities to enhance your life, instead of worsening it, you master your life. You can’t always control the events that happen in your life, but you can control the meaning that you ascribe to those events.

Have you ever looked back at a stressful time in your life and been grateful for the experience because it allowed you to be the person that you are today? I know I have. Life is designed to teach you valuable lessons so that you can learn and grow from each experience.  Life is the greatest teacher of all. Make stress and anxiety your friend, not your foe.

Here are 5 public speaking tips for becoming a captivating speaker.

1. Experience Is King

The best and most important public speaking tip that I could give is to gain as much experience as possible.

Experience is king.  There is nothing that beats real-world practice and experience speaking in front of a crowd.

You can learn as much as you want through reading books or watching videos, but nothing will come close to the experience you gain speaking.  That is why it's beneficial to practice as much as you can.

If you want a safe environment to practice in front of, I recommend joining Toastmasters or find local public speaking groups in your city.

2. Model Captivating Public Speakers

One of the biggest things that helped me develop myself as a speaker (aside from gaining experience), is modelling other captivating public speakers.

I can't tell you how much time I've spent attending seminars and taking notes of the speaking styles of the speakers in front of me.  I've even spent time just watching speeches on YouTube of some of the people that I follow, such as Tony Robbins, and seeing how I can model the way that they speak.

By watching videos or attending seminars, you can see the mannerisms and body language of these speakers.  You can adopt the way they move, their gestures, posture, tonality, enthusiasm, etc…

Sometimes you can even practice speaking like them around your house, in front of an “imaginary audience”, pretending that you are the speaker you're trying to model.

3. Record Yourself Speaking

If you really want to improve your public speaking skills fast, try recording yourself speaking in front of a camera.

By recording yourself speaking, you'll see what you really look like while speaking.  You'll be able to see your body language, any nervous ticks you may have, as well as anything else you might want to correct.

Since recording video blogs every week for years, I've been able to see my weaknesses and improve them over time.  For example, in some of my videos you will see that I used to say “um” or “uh” or “you know” too much.  By recording myself, I've been able to notice those things and consciously improve them over time.  It's amazing how recording yourself can make a difference in your improvement!

4. Communicate With Passion And Excitement

Another public speaking tip that can help you is to communicate with passion and excitement.  Be enthusiastic while speaking.

Most people don't realize that most of communication is non-verbal.  In fact, a study was done that said that 93% of communication is non-verbal, while only 7% is verbal.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it.  You can make anything sound exciting and captivate an audience, if you are communicating with passion and excitement.

5. Have A Powerful WHY To Speak

Every time I record a video or speak in front of a crowd, I always make sure I have an empowering purpose or WHY to speak.  This elicits the passion and excitement for me to deliver the message that I want to share in a powerful way.

I usually ask myself…

Why is what I am about to share important?

Why do they need to hear this?

How will what I am going to share help others?

How can I serve these people at the highest level?

Why do I care about these people?  Why do I respect them?

By focusing on these questions, it gives me more of a purpose to want to help and serve others.  It allows me to tap into a different level of resourcefulness and creativity, which makes the way I speak more powerful and engaging.

Please leave a comment below or let me know any questions you have.  I'd love to hear what you think!
