Why You Need to Master Your Life

It's easy to say that mastery is not important. You can easily just continue to stay in the same situation with the same desires. It's always easier to keep the same job, relationship status or even lifestyle. Even though it's not what you want, it's always more comfortable.

I'm challenging you to overcome your fear of changing your life to live what you really want.

Did you know… only 3 out of 10 people are happy with their lives. Why is the number so low? The main reason is that most people feel trapped in a routine. They are unable to do what they really want in their lives and are bombarded with similarity and a lack of fulfillment.

If that grows within one's life, it leads to hyperstimulation of emotions, which becomes anxiety. Or, it leads to a shut down of emotions, which becomes depression. With those two extreme reactions, it causes not only unhappiness but other issues.

Not only are many unhappy with their lives, but the antidotes that many uses are medications that are designed to rebalance the emotions. Over 50% of individuals use some form of medicine to balance out anxiety and depression. However, when you stop using the medications, the anxiety and depression return.

It may seem like a faster fix to take this route and to balance the emotions. However, when you commit to a life course, it doesn't temporarily change the situation. It changes the situation forever.

I would like to share with you how to calculate and track your net worth. This is one of the most important finance rituals that you can have for your life.

How will you ever know if you are getting ahead financially if you have no way of tracking your wealth?

I first started engaging in this ritual in my early 20’s, when I would track and update my net worth every 3 months. Today, I track it every 6-12 months. I have come to understand that my net worth is the most important number when it comes down to my financial wealth and abundance.

Theoretically, your net worth is what you would have in cash if you sold every significant possession and paid off all of your debts.

If your net worth is a negative number, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. All that matters is that you take action and start making better financial moves.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted by your good ones.”

It’s not about how much money that you make, but rather how much money that you get to keep AND what you choose to do with that money, in terms of accumulating assets and building up your net worth.

A great example of someone who has effectively mastered the investment game is Warren Buffett. Known to be worth $75 billion dollars, he is one of the most successful self-made investors in the world.

At the age of 11, he used cash from his paper route to buy farmland. At 15 years of age, he already had a net worth of $6000.

I believe that while we should all strive to make more money, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are worth a lot of money. For example, you could make one million dollars per year, but you could also be spending all that money in one year. If you adopt this behaviour pattern, you will never get ahead in life.

The goal is to accumulate assets that can then provide a passive income source for you, which will continue to grow as you move throughout your life. If you take this path, you will achieve financial freedom.

I see a lot of people who work their entire lives, but have nothing to show for it. Make money, but make sure that you do something with it. If you don’t currently know how to manage your finances, then making money isn’t going to help you.

Your net worth is your assets minus your liabilities. Your assets are what you own and your liabilities are what you owe.

You want to focus on accumulating more assets. Go through all of your assets. Examples may be cash, a business, or investments like stocks, mutual funds, or real estate.

Calculate where you currently are for each of your assets, and then add all of them together. Keep in mind that your final number isn’t your net worth because you also need to take into account any liabilities that you may have.

For example, you may have a student loan, a line of credit, a car loan, or a mortgage. Calculate those liabilities and come up with a final number.

In order to determine your net worth, you would take your assets and subtract it by your liabilities. Ideally, you want to accumulate more assets over time and reduce your liabilities.

When you go through the process of calculating and tracking your net worth, you may realize that you need to cut out some of your expenses and change your lifestyle. Being smart and taking these steps is what will determine your financial wealth, more than anything else.

This is how to calculate and track your net worth. The more that you measure something, the easier it becomes to manage it. I challenge you to create a ritual around financial wealth and abundance and make it a priority every day.

I will also share some of the strategies that I employ in my life when it comes to creating financial wealth and abundance. A lot of people are great at making money, but they don’t know how to invest it, and that is what I teach people how to do.

I believe that financial freedom begins with a change of your mindset. Calculating and tracking your net worth is one of the most important steps that you can take in order to improve your finances.

The best way to answer this question is to create a compelling vision for your life. This is one of the most effective strategies for achieving your dreams.

Most people have a million excuses for why they can’t dream. Tap into the small child inside of you who believes that they can be and do anything in this world. What would that look like for you?

Creating a vision for your life begins by identifying your core values and your purpose. Unfortunately, for many people, a vision doesn’t seem real for them, which is why you need to break it down into smaller goals.

You need to have a yearly goal in every aspect of your life – health, emotions, finances, spirituality, career, relationships, etc. For example, if you want to make $100,000 in one year, then how much money do you need to make in the next 6 months, 3 months, or 1 month?

A vision is a powerful catalyst for doing so, because it gives you something to work towards. Don’t let your vision scare you. Everything of value in life always has a starting point. Just start!

When I was 17 years old I didn’t think that my life was going anywhere – I was shy, depressed, lonely, and I was addicted to video games.

I let my life pass me by because I wasn’t focused on creating the future that I desired. This was a big mistake. As soon as you start thinking for your future, and not just doing what is convenient and comfortable, your life changes.

If you want to invest in your future, you need to start learning and growing. When you do so, it opens up your mind to new possibilities and opportunities. Jim Rohn said it best, “If you want to have more, you need to become more.”

In my early 20’s, I made the decision to change my life for the better. I didn’t have much money at the time, but I was committed to personal growth.

I remember that I went to a thrift shop in Vancouver, B.C. and bought $2 self-development books and started reading as much as I could.

Reading these books made me realize what my mission and purpose in life was. From that moment on, I was hooked.

If you think you are going nowhere in life, drop that story. The beauty of life is that, at any given moment, you have the power to make a change.

Find resources, seminars, or books that target your biggest obstacle in life, and learn the strategies and habits from the people that have overcome whatever it is that is holding you back. Once you overcome your fears, you will upgrade your life.

Lastly, every month I challenge you to write down and document all of the amazing goals that you have accomplished in your life, big and small. Every month I like to capture my monthly goals, the conversations I had, the books that I read, the content I have consumed, the ways that I grew and improved myself, and the actions that I took in my business. If you do so, it will inspire and motivate you to achieve more.

If you think you are going nowhere in life, take a deep breath and watch this. Write down your vision and your goals, and then take action!

Nothing is going to change if you just consume content. You need to apply what you are learning. There is no better time than now to take a risk, push your comfort zone, and become the person that you desire to be. Are you ready?

I want to share with you an exercise on how to determine your core life values. Through this process, we are going to discover whether your current values are propelling you forward, or holding you back.

Our values form the foundation of our lives; they determine the decisions that we make and the direction that our lives take. In the words of John C. Maxwell, “Your core values are the deeply held beliefs that authentically describe your soul.”

The first step is to acknowledge and take responsibility for the life that you have created. If your values aren’t in alignment with your vision, there will be resistance, in the form of a tremendous amount of push, effort, and willpower. Alternatively, when you align with what you truly desire in life, you will experience more ease, less effort, and a greater sense of fulfillment.

If you want to determine your core life values, start by figuring out what's REALLY important to you. When you do so, you can choose beliefs and habits that ensure that your life aligns with those values. Are you ready to determine your core life values?

I originally learned about this core life values exercise from a few different schools of thought in the NLP community. When I went to Tony Robbins’ seminar, Date With Destiny, he shared this process in more depth.

Start by asking yourself this question – “What has been most important thing in my life?” Write down the first thing that comes up for you. It could be happiness, success, money, family, security or something completely different.

Ask yourself the same question again, “What else has been important for me in my life?” Rinse and repeat this self-reflection process, until you have created a list of things. When you engage in this exercise, tap into the core emotions that come up for you, and write them down as well.

Once you have your list of things, sit back and ask yourself, “What has been the most important value in my life?” Understanding the hierarchy of your values is critical to determining what you need to focus the most attention on.

Let me provide you with a personal example. The #1 thing that has allowed me to get to where I am today has been my commitment to personal growth and development. This year alone, I have invested tens of thousands of dollars in seminars and workshops. The reason I do that is because growth is a very important value for me.

I also really value success and money, which comes from my desire for freedom and achievement. That is what led me to make the decision to become an entrepreneur. Because of that choice, I had to sacrifice a lot, and work hard to create the life that I have today. Watch my YouTube video above to learn what my 7 core values are!

You want to come up with at least 7 values. Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong. Your most important values are based on the life that you desire.

Once you’ve looked at your list of values, and identified some of the conflicts that you’ve been experiencing, ask yourself, “What is the vision for my life?” You may discover that there are a few things on your list that you didn’t previously think about.

For example, if your vision is to travel the world with the love of your life, and build a successful online business that impacts the world, you need to place more emphasis on the values of love, health, and contribution. From the list of values that you have, ask yourself, “Which of these values is the most important?”

This is the process for how to determine your core life values. By engaging in this exercise, hopefully it will help you better understand how you have been living your life, and what needs to change in order to create the life of your dreams. I encourage you to take out a pen and paper, put yourself in a distraction-free environment, and spend some time reflecting on your values.

I would like to give you some insights into NLP training & techniques, in particular how to use neuro linguistic programming to change your life.

Founded in the 1970’s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, NLP is an approach to communication and personal development that explores how we think and feel, and analyzes the internal language patterns that we use to reflect our experiences.

It's called neuro linguistic programming because it combines three words. The word “neuro” represents our nervous system, the word “linguistic” stands for our language, and the word, “programming” represents the actions that we take in order to achieve specific results.

One of the most powerful skills that you can learn in life is the ability to control your emotional responses to people and your environment. Your capacity to effectively do so directly impacts the extent to which you achieve your goals.

The NLP approach was developed out of the modeling of human behaviours. Richard Bandler and John Grinder watched and observed the behaviours of successful psychotherapists, and broke down the language and the processes that they used, in order to create change in people.

The concept of modeling denotes that if someone is getting a result that you desire, you can achieve the same result if you break down and model one’s language patterns, beliefs, and behaviours. That is essentially what you are doing when you are consuming my content; you are modeling the success strategies that I have used in my life and applying it in your own.

I was first introduced to the world of NLP when I was 17 years old. I used to be very shy and I lacked self-esteem and social skills. When I was introduced to the work of Paul McKenna and Tony Robbins, who both utilized NLP practices in their work, my interest in the approach grew even stronger.

NLP principles & techniques have helped get me get into better shape, build multiple businesses, attract an amazing partner, and overcome limiting beliefs and fears, to name a few things.

A few years ago I decided to take things to the next level, and I went through a 9-day NLP practitioner training program, which taught me how to use neuro linguistic programming to change my life. NLP has made a big difference with regards to how I coach my clients, and in how I move throughout my life.

Neuro Linguistic Programming Principles

There are multiple NLP principles and techniques, but I would like to share 3 of them with you:

1. The map is not the territory

As human beings, we don’t respond to reality. Rather, we respond to our internalized map of reality, because we all have different perceptions and meanings of people and the world at large. What you see on the surface isn’t necessarily the reality of the situation.

2. Anchoring

An anchor is an association that elicits a certain emotion within you. We can elicit any emotion we desire by changing how we represent the world. For example, if I wanted you to experience happiness, I could elicit that emotion within you by saying to you, “Do you remember a time in your life when you experienced happiness?”

By asking it, you have to remember this experience, which brings you back to that emotional state. You can then anchor that emotion to anything that you desire. The key to anchoring is making sure that at the peak of your emotional intensity you engage in a gesture, like pumping your fist or clapping your hands.

Why? When you do, that feeling of happiness will get linked to the unique gesture that you engage in. If you engage in anchoring on a consistent basis, it will become programmed into your mind.

3. Reframing

This involves taking the frame and turning it, so that you change the way that you look at it. In the words of Wayne Dyer, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

For example, let’s say that someone yelled at you when you were a child, and from that experience, you associated yelling to meaning you aren’t good enough. That meaning is based on the perception or frame that you are making of that experience.

What would happen if you viewed that experience as a gift? Because that person yelled at you, maybe it forced you to grow, making you less reactive and stronger.

NLP Sensory Modalities

NLP believes that we process information, learn, and experience the world via three distinct sensory modalities, otherwise known as representational systems – visual (see), auditory (hear), kinesthetic (feel). Although we use all of our senses, depending on the circumstances, we may focus on one modality more than the other.

Research has found that there are certain emotions or behaviours that will empower or disempower you, based on an understanding of these sensory modalities.

For example, let’s say you are procrastinating on something in life. If you were to close your eyes and ask yourself, “What is it that I’m procrastinating on?” and make an image of it, there are certain submodalities that will allow you to understand why you are feeling a certain way.

For example, most people that are unmotivated to do something will visualize an image that is small, dim, and still. It is no surprise why someone would feel unmotivated, because they are experiencing something in a disempowering way.

Conversely, if you think about something that inspires and excites you, and you close your eyes, NLP finds that there is a different strategy of submodalities that people use in order to create a visual component. Oftentimes, that image will be close to you – it will be big, bright, colourful, and may even be moving. Just by using this process alone, you can change the way you understand something.

I hope I have been able to shed light on how to use neuro linguistic programming to change your life. Overall, my experience with NLP training & techniques has been powerful. I would like to respond to a question that I received on Snapchat from one of my follower’s by the name of Noah, who asked me to reflect on how to find meaning in life. This topic brings into question the myriad of limiting beliefs that people have about themselves and the world.

We all have limiting beliefs that hold us back from achieving our goals and dreams. However, at any given moment, we have the power to change those beliefs. Finding meaning in life may seem incomprehensible, but if you commit to shifting your mindset, your entire life will transform, giving you the power to create a life that is rich in meaning.

In the words of Brian Tracy, “You begin to fly when you let go of self-limiting belief and allow your mind and aspirations to rise to greater heights.” Are you ready to let go of your limiting beliefs and find meaning in life?

Noah shared some of this story with me, saying that, “Sometimes I lose motivation because I feel that life has no point. I’m not depressed. I’m a very happy person. For example, I’ve worked hard, got all A’s in school, but I don’t feel like I’ve benefited from it at all. Could you talk about happiness and fulfillment and how to succeed at life?”

The first point that I want to touch on from Noah’s comment is when he expresses that, “Life has no point.” Noah, if you truly believe this, then that is a very disempowering belief that is going to hold you back in life. Why wake up every day and achieve a goal if you believe that life has no meaning? Why do anything?

This limiting belief system is something that you need to change. Is it really true that life has no point? I would argue, no. Be honest with yourself and start to question this belief. Ask yourself, “Is it possible that I’ve misinterpreted an event or circumstance in my life? Is it possible that other people don’t have this belief, and instead, believe that life is full of meaning and joy?”

One thing that I’ve learned from years of coaching people is that you always have to take someone’s challenge and define it in solvable terms. Noah, you need to understand that this is JUST a belief, and you have the power to shift it at any time. It’s hard to change your entire life, but it’s easy to change a pattern or a belief.

Only YOU control the meaning of your life. Whatever you tell yourself will be true for you, whether or it’s based in reality or not. If you believe that life has no point, then that is what you are going to manifest.

What is the more empowering perspective that you could take towards life? We so often take life for granted and don’t take pleasure in the little things. Instead, we drown in worry and fear, which inhibits our ability to be present and grateful. We dwell on what we don’t have, instead of being happy for what we do have.

Noah, it sounds like you haven’t found a purpose for your life yet, something that empowers and drives you. What do you want your life to be about? Just decide. Martin Luther King once said, “A man or a woman that hasn’t yet found something that they are willing to die for, isn’t fit to live.”

Noah, the second point that you made that I want to touch on is that you expressed that you have received straight A’s in school, but that you don’t feel that you received any benefit from it. This is also a limiting belief that you have. Again, I’m going to challenge you. Did school teach you to show up and be consistent? Did school projects improve your memory and focus? Did you learn how to work hard and follow through on a task and do a good job? Of course! The list goes on and on.

The problem is that you aren’t seeing them because you’ve got blinders on. Train your mind to focus on the good because there is value in everything IF you look for it. Every day, ask yourself, “What is the benefit of this experience?” Make it a priority to find more joy in the richness of life.

Lastly, you asked me to comment on how to be happy and fulfilled in life. The best advice that I can give you is that you have to focus on the good things that already exist in your life. You don’t have to achieve something grandiose in order to experience true happiness. Happiness is an inside job.

It’s not the events of your life that create happiness. Rather, it’s the meaning that you ascribe to those events. Commit to living your life to the fullest, regardless of your circumstances in life, because happiness is a choice.

Another piece of advice that I can give you is that, if you don’t already have a morning ritual, you need one. This is a practical way to start conditioning your mind to focus on the good every day so that you can experience a rich and happy life. Do you want to know how I hit emotional threshold and changed my life? We all cope with emotions in different ways, based in part on our nature and how we are conditioned to respond to challenges in our environments.

John Medina, author of New York Times Bestseller, Brain Rules: (Updated and Expanded): 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School, says that each of us has a unique reaction to stress, which makes it difficult to quantify it.

An emotional threshold is the tipping point at which we perceive a stimulus, threatening or not, and act on it. Depending on the situation, sometimes we have the ability to effectively manage our emotions and make rational decisions, while other times our emotions overpower us, which ends up dictating our decisions.

Research consistently shows that the skill of self-regulation is necessary for reliable emotional well-being. Your emotional threshold can expand or contract throughout your life. If you want to master your life learning how to express, experience, and regulate your emotions needs to be at the top of your list. Are your emotions driving you or destroying you?

When I was in high school I was a very shy, introverted kid, who was obsessed with video games. The online gaming world satisfied my nature and provided me with a comfortable means of non-human enjoyment. I felt safe not having to interact with others in social settings, because that is what made me most anxious.

I was also a very sensitive kid, so when I fell head over heels in love with a girl and she broke my heart, I was devastated. The pain from that experience was a wake-up call. I didn’t want to live a life of suffering, so I made a decision to change my life. Between the ages of 19-21, I would force myself to go out to clubs.

I didn't want to drink and party, but rather I wanted to place myself in these uncomfortable situations so that I would force myself to engage with others and develop the social skills that I desired. I knew that if I placed myself in enough uncomfortable situations, I would eventually get comfortable being uncomfortable. Actions like these are what drove me to improve my social skills, mindset, and confidence.

I remember another experience that made a large impact on the direction that my life would take. At the beginning of my online business, I was really struggling financially. During this time, I was in traveling throughout Cambodia and one day I felt compelled to give back to the people. I gave $20 to one of the poverty-stricken children that were begging on the side of road. Once I gave the money to the child, about 30 other children surrounded me and asked for money as well.

That was a life changing moment for me because I realized that I never wanted to be in a position in my life where I couldn’t give. From that day forward, I made a decision that I never wanted to live from a place of scarcity because it had created so much pain and worry in my life. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, and so I set out on a journey to create the life that I desired.

One day I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “Enough is enough.” The pain that I was experiencing motivated and inspired me to shift the way that I was living, and take the steps necessary in order to change my life and achieve success. These were the experiences that led me to hit emotional threshold and changed my life!

Many people are victims to their emotions and believe that they have no control over how they feel. I used to adopt this scarcity mentality, but once I realized that only I am in control of my choices, everything in my life changed. Most people cover things up because they don’t want to face the reality of their lives, and they make it acceptable to settle. If you can get to the truth, you can change anything.

If you want to have a larger emotional threshold, you need to learn how to channel negative energy into something positive. Condition your mind so that you approach challenges in life with a proactive mindset. When you do, you will master your emotional state and feel more in control of your life.

In the words of Paul Wong, “The biggest challenge to self-control is emotional regulation. Successful people know how to make their emotions their servants rather than their masters.”

Do you want to be happier and live an extraordinary life? The recipe is quite simple. Life-altering, take-your-breath-away moments are great, but those aren’t the experiences that will bring you the most joy in life.

Happiness is a universal emotion. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that living an extraordinary life is a lofty, unachievable goal, but this is far from true. Financial wealth and materialistic possessions will not bring you happiness.

If you want to be happier and live an extraordinary life, you need to be grateful for the extraordinary things that already exist in your life. Sometimes it’s the small things that mean the most. The reason that something is extraordinary in your life is because of how you feel about it. What you feel, you attract.

In the words of Mandy Hale, “Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like, and celebrating it for everything it is.” What does happiness mean to you?

In Bonnie Ware’s book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing, she found that one of the top regrets that people talked about before they died was that they didn’t allow themselves to experience more happiness. 

New research suggests that capturing the mundane experiences is actually what may bring us unexpected happiness in the future (Zhang, Kim, & Brooks, 2014). Savour the small moments in life, because in the end they may be the experiences that you remember the most. Every day I focus on rituals that inspire me to live in a constant state of happiness.

Happiness is a daily practice. Once I made the decision to enjoy each day of my life to the fullest and conditioned my mind to experience extraordinary pleasure from the simple things, every area of my life transformed, and so can yours.

True happiness comes from within; it’s an inside job. I believe that we all have a higher self, otherwise known as the person that we aspire to be. Who do you aspire to be? Step into that role with confidence and determination. When you face obstacles or challenges in life, step back and ask yourself, “What would my highest self do?” When you do so, it allows you to be more self-aware and make more conscious decisions.

If you want to be happier and live an extraordinary life, you need to make it a priority to master every area of your life. That is the recipe for true happiness and fulfillment. I’m not perfect, but I do the work by way of making the commitment to continuously grow and evolve in all areas of my life.

In the words of T. Harv Eker, “How you do anything is how you do everything in life.” Do you want to be happier and live an extraordinary life? The truth is, that all you have to do is to act “as if” happiness is already your reality. Only YOU have the power to create it. It's time to take action!
